Introduction

Detective Elena Cross has spent twelve years hunting killers.

She never expected one to start exposing the people hiding behind the law.

When a respected judge is found dead inside an abandoned courtroom, his hands stained red and a confession pinned to his chest, Elena is assigned to lead the investigation. The evidence reveals that the judge accepted bribes, buried violent crimes, and protected dangerous men.

Beside his body is a note addressed to Elena.

Then another corrupt official dies.

And another.

With every murder, the killer uncovers a network of police officers, lawyers, doctors, and judges who have spent years silencing victims and destroying evidence. His notes warn Elena about the people surrounding her, reveal secrets no outsider should know, and guide her toward crimes her own department is desperate to conceal.

When Elena follows one of his clues, she catches a powerful attorney falsifying documents. But the evidence vanishes, and the man walks free.

Hours later, he becomes the Confessor’s next victim.

I gave him to you alive. Your people gave him back to me.

Now Elena must choose who to trust: the officers who swore to uphold the law or the murderer who has never lied to her.

But when an innocent witness is killed using the Confessor’s methods, Elena realizes someone inside her department is copying his crimes.

To expose the truth, she may have to work with the killer she was sworn to arrest before the people closest to her silence them both.

Chapter 1

Elena

The old Blackwell County Courthouse had been abandoned for almost nine years, but someone had turned on every light in the largest courtroom.

From the street, the windows glowed through sheets of rain like a row of watchful eyes.

I stood beneath the courthouse steps with water dripping from the ends of my hair and stared up at the crumbling stone building. Yellow crime-scene tape stretched between two rusted lampposts, snapping violently whenever the wind caught it. Beyond it, three patrol cars crowded the curb, their lights washing the rain-slick pavement in flashes of blue and red.

No sirens. No shouting. Just the low murmur of radios and the steady hiss of rainfall against concrete.

Some scenes were loud when you arrived. People screaming. Officers barking orders. Paramedics running through doorways with blood already on their gloves.

The quiet ones were worse. Quiet meant there was no one left to save.

I ducked beneath the tape and pulled my coat tighter around myself.

A uniformed officer stood beneath the courthouse awning, shoulders hunched against the cold. He looked young enough that the rain on his face might have been mistaken for sweat.

“Detective Cross?”

“That’s me.”

He straightened immediately. “Officer Jamison. I’ve been keeping the entry log.”

His clipboard shook slightly as he held it out.

I signed my name beneath Daniel Reyes’s and Owen Vance’s, then glanced toward the courthouse doors. One hung partly open, its dark wood swollen from years of neglect. The brass handle had been polished recently.

Not cleaned by the city. Polished. Everything else around it was coated in dust and grime.

“Who found him?” I asked.

“Private security officer from the construction company. The county approved a renovation assessment last month. Security does a drive-by twice a night because teenagers keep breaking in.”

“What time?”

“Call came in at twelve fourteen. He saw the lights and thought someone was trespassing.”

“And the building?”

“Cleared room by room. No one else inside.”

“No sign of the person who turned the lights on?”

Jamison shook his head. “No, ma’am.”

“Detective is fine.”

“Yes, Detective.” His gaze slid toward the open doorway.

“What did you see?” I asked.

“Enough.” His answer came too quickly.

I studied him. “Did you enter the courtroom?”

“Only as far as the doors. Detective Vance told us to keep everyone out after that.”

“And before Vance arrived?”

“The security guard went in. Officer Kim followed him to confirm the victim was deceased. Nobody touched the body.”

The emphasis told me someone had already accused him of doing exactly that.

“Where’s the guard now?”

“In the first-floor conference room with Officer Kim.”

“Keep them separated until Reyes or I speak with them.”

“Yes, Detective.”

I reached for the courthouse door.

Jamison lowered his voice. “It’s Judge Kline.”

My hand stopped on the polished brass. “I heard.”

Everyone in Blackwell had heard of Everett Kline.

For more than three decades, his name had been attached to murder trials, political corruption cases, custody battles, and the occasional scandal wealthy families paid to keep out of the papers. He had appeared on courthouse steps with grieving parents. He had lectured violent defendants about accountability. He had shaken hands with mayors, police chiefs, governors, and at least one senator.

He had been called firm. Principled. Honorable. Now he was dead inside the same courtroom where he had built that reputation.

Jamison swallowed. “He looks…”

I waited.

The officer’s eyes shifted away from mine. “Like someone wanted us to see him.”

A cold sensation moved slowly along my spine.

“Stay at the door,” I told him. “No one enters without being logged.”

I stepped inside. The smell hit me first. Wet stone. Mold. Old wood. And beneath it, something sharper.

Bleach.

Not enough to overwhelm the building’s decay, but enough that my instincts tightened.

The lobby had been stripped almost bare. Pale rectangles marked the walls where portraits and plaques had once hung. The security desk was gone. So were the benches, metal detectors, and directory boards.

Only a cracked marble floor remained, its black-and-white tiles gleaming beneath temporary construction lights.

Evidence markers led toward a broad staircase.

My heels clicked softly against stone as I crossed the lobby. Every sound climbed the walls and returned to me thinner, distorted by the empty space.

The courthouse had been considered beautiful once.

My father had brought me here when I was eight years old. He had been testifying in a murder trial and could not find anyone to watch me after school, so he had settled me on a bench with a coloring book and made me promise not to wander.

I had wandered anyway.

I remembered towering columns, polished railings, lawyers moving quickly with files clutched to their chests. I remembered thinking that every person who passed knew something important.

Most clearly, I remembered my father kneeling in front of me after finding me near the courtroom doors.

Justice isn’t a show, El, he had said. It only looks like one from the hallway.

At eight, I had not understood him.

At thirty-five, I still was not sure I did.

I climbed the stairs.

The second floor was darker. Several fixtures had been removed, leaving loose wires hanging from the ceiling. Plastic sheeting covered open doorways, breathing in and out whenever the wind slipped through broken windows.

At the end of the corridor, light poured through a pair of tall courtroom doors.

A crime-scene technician stood outside them.

Elliot Finch was narrow-shouldered, pale, and permanently looked as though he had not slept enough. His dark curls had flattened beneath a disposable hood, and his glasses sat crooked behind the protective mask hanging under his chin.

He glanced up when he heard me. “You’re late.”

I checked my watch. “By four minutes.”

“That’s late.”

“You texted me a dead judge and an address at twelve thirty-seven.”

“I included a pin.”

“The pin took me to the condemned parking garage.”

“That sounds like a mapping problem.”

“It sounds like a Finch problem.”

He considered that, then nodded. “Possible.”

Despite myself, the corner of my mouth moved.

Elliot offered me shoe covers and gloves.

“Reyes is inside,” he said. “Vance too.”

“Has anyone touched the body?”

“Not since I arrived. The responding officer checked for a pulse at the neck. I swabbed the area before anyone complains.”

“Cause of death?”

“Not immediately visible.”

“That means you don’t know.”

“It means I don’t guess while detectives breathe over my shoulder.”

“Good policy.”

“It would work better if detectives stopped doing that.”

I pulled the shoe covers over my boots. “Anything at the entrance?”

“No broken lock. No damage to the hinges. Dust along the doorframe is disturbed, but that could have happened at any point in the last decade. There’s partial transfer on the brass handle downstairs, though the rain and the security officer did us no favors.”

“Cameras?”

“Two construction cameras outside. One over the rear entrance, one facing the parking lot. Both lost signal at eleven fifty-three.”

“Lost signal naturally?”

Elliot looked at me over the rims of his glasses. “Do I strike you as a man who believes in naturally occurring electronic failures at murder scenes?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He was a beast inhabiting this mansion, inflicting inhuman torture on my poor soul. He had created a living hell for me, this pitiful girl, within his castle.

On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.

“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.

Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:

“Until you die!”

With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.

But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.

My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.

I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!
