Introduction
Chapter 1
The secret to perfect chamomile tea isn’t the water temperature, nor is it the age of the porcelain. It’s the whisper.
"Calm down," I murmured, leaning over the steaming earthenware pot. I let a breath of pure, filtered Air magic slip from my lips, twirling the steam into a miniature vortex. At the same time, I tapped my fingers against the wooden counter, sending a thrum of Earth magic up through the table leg and into the ceramic. The dried golden flower buds inside the pot bloomed instantly, releasing a rich, honey-sweet aroma that smelled like a warm summer afternoon.
Dual-wielding. It was my greatest tool, and my most dangerous secret. In the High Fae Realm, mixing elements was considered an abomination—a genetic defect that the High Council actively "cleansed." So, I hid here. On the mortal-realm border, inside a crooked, three-story cottage that served as both my sanctuary and my livelihood: The Sprouted Whisk.
Downstairs, the tea shop was a haven of polished oak, hanging ivy, and the soft chatter of regular patrons seeking cures for mundane ailments. Upstairs and out the back, hidden behind a heavy illusion ward, lay my private sanctuary—a sprawling, glass-domed conservatory where injured forest creatures came to heal.
"Aveline, darling," a raspy voice called out.
I looked up to see Barnaby, a local Pixie whose wings had been singed by a careless campfire last week. He was currently perched on the rim of a sugar bowl, his translucent green wings looking much healthier thanks to my specialized soot-weed poultice.
"Yes, Barnaby?" I asked, wiping my hands on my flour-dusted apron.
"The wind outside is tasting sour," the little creature said, shivering as his antenna twitched. "It smells like ozone. And... heavy sea salt? But we are miles from the ocean!"
I frowned, walking over to the diamond-paned front window. Barnaby was right. The sky over the Whispering Woods had turned an unnatural, bruised shade of violet. The leaves on the ancient oak trees weren’t just rustling; they were trembling under a sudden, violent gale that carried the distinct, unmistakable scent of deep ocean trenches.
"Right. Time to close up early," I announced to the remaining three customers in the shop. "There’s a nasty storm rolling in. Everyone head home safely."
The patrons didn't need to be told twice. They grabbed their coats, thanked me, and hurried out. I flitted around them, offering cheerful, bright smiles that probably looked a bit too wide.
"Have a lovely evening! Watch out for falling branches! The mud is excellent for skin exfoliation if you trip!" I called out enthusiastically.
The last customer, the village blacksmith, gave me a deeply confused look before stepping out. I instantly deflated, pinching the bridge of my nose. 'Excellent for skin exfoliation? Really, Aveline? Why can’t you just say 'have a good night' like a normal person?'
Whenever I wasn't focusing on healing a crisis, my brain completely short-circuited in social situations. I loved people, I really did, but talking to them without a medical chart in my hand made me feel like an owl trying to recite poetry. Put a bleeding centaur in front of me, and I was a kickass, fearless medic. Put a nice neighbor in front of me asking about the weather, and I became a bumbling mess.
"Barnaby," I said, a sudden, cold wave of reality washing over my sunny disposition. "What day is it?"
The pixie blinked his large, translucent eyes. "Um. Thornday?"
"Which means..." My stomach dropped through the floorboards. "The monthly village audit is in less than forty-eight hours."
The monthly audit. Every thirty days, Magistrate Vance—a dry, humorless High Fae bureaucrat with an unnatural obsession with paperwork—came to inspect The Sprouted Whisk. He checked the tax ledgers and used a magical pendulum to scan the premises for unregistered high-tier magic. If he found anything suspicious, he'd call the High Council Vanguard, and my secret dual-wielding life would be over.
Crack!
A flash of blue lightning illuminated the shop, followed by a sound that made my heart leap into my throat—a low, echoing hum. It wasn't thunder. It sounded like a whale song, a desperate, vibrating melody of pain cutting through the roaring wind from the woods just behind my shop.
"Barnaby, get upstairs. Lock the trapdoor!" I commanded, my awkward shopkeeper demeanor vanishing instantly.
I grabbed my ironwood staff—a tool that helped me channel my Earth magic without drawing attention—and a heavy canvas medical pack. I always went out into the woods after storms to rescue misplaced woodland creatures, but this feeling in the air was entirely different. It felt heavy. Majestic. Oppressive.
I pushed through the back door into the lashing rain. The wind screamed, tearing at my cloak as I plunged into the dark tree line of the Whispering Woods.
My Earth magic thrummed through the soles of my boots, guiding me through the thick mud. The plants were weeping, terrified by the sudden influx of chaotic, foreign energy. I followed the scent of sea salt, which grew stronger and thicker until it practically coated my tongue.
"Hello?" I called out, shielding my eyes from the downpour. "Is someone there?"
Near the roots of a massive, ancient willow tree, the mud was churning. A deep trench had been plowed into the earth, as if something heavy had crawled or dragged itself from the nearby riverbed to hide in the thickets.
I stepped closer, raising my staff, and let out a soft gasp.
It wasn't a forest animal.
Sprawled in the black mud, tangled in weeping willow branches, lay a creature of absolute myth. From the waist up, he possessed the sculpted, powerful torso of a man, with sun-kissed skin that shimmered with an iridescent, pearlescent sheen under the lightning flashes. His hair was the color of midnight ocean water, tangled with dark seaweed.
But from the waist down...
A massive, breathtaking tail coiled in the mud. Its scales were a mesmerizing cascade of deep sapphire and midnight blue, glittering like crushed diamonds despite the dirt. Long, translucent fins, gossamer thin but sharp as razors, twitched weakly against the roots of the tree.
A merman. A high-tier creature of the deep ocean, miles away from his home, stranded on the unforgiving dirt.
"Oh, by the Mother," I breathed, dropping my staff and rushing forward.
I fell to my knees in the mud beside him. He was gasping, his chest heaving violently. On his neck, elegant, dark silver gills fluttered frantically, struggling to draw life from the thick, rain-heavy air. He was suffocating. The land was rejecting him, and the rain was only keeping his tail manifested, trapping him here.
"Hey, can you hear me?" I asked, my voice laced with panic. I pressed my hands against his bare, broad chest. His skin was freezing, his heartbeat a frantic, erratic drumbeat against my palms.
Suddenly, his eyes snapped open.
They were a piercing, luminescent sea-green, completely devoid of human whites, glowing with a fierce, untamed power. Even on the verge of death, the sheer, royal authority radiating from him was suffocating. He looked at me not as a savior, but as a predator cornered in a trap.
With a weak, fluid motion, his webbed, clawed hand shot out of the mud, clamping firmly around my throat. His grip was surprisingly icy and incredibly strong.
"Land... walker," he rasped, his voice sounding like grinding tectonic plates beneath the ocean floor. "Back... away."
I choked, my eyes widening. I was pinned in the mud by a dying sea prince, suffocating in the middle of a storm, and the only thing my awkward brain could think of was: Wow, his hands are really well-moisturized.
"I'm... trying to... help you, you stubborn fish!" I wheezed, tapping his wrist.
His grip tightened for a fraction of a second, his glowing eyes burning into mine. But the strain was too much. The light in his green eyes flickered, his hand went limp, dropping from my neck, and his head fell back into the wet earth. He was completely unconscious.
I coughed, rubbing my neck, and looked at the massive sapphire tail pinning me down.
"Right," I muttered, a bright, slightly manic smile spreading across my face as the sheer absurdity of the situation hit me. "I have a suffocating sea prince in my backyard, a storm trying to drown my shop, and the Monthly Fae Audit is in forty-eight hours. This is perfectly fine. Totally manageable."
