Introduction

Fifteen years ago, my fourteen-year-old sister Elise died on her way to the town flea market. She'd been raped. Her legs sawed cleanly off.
Our mother—perpetually drunk—didn't even look at the body. She just tore at the frozen mud with her bare hands, nails splitting, blood mixing with slush.
"The dolls! Where are the dolls she had? Where are they?"
Fifteen years later, I'm a child welfare caseworker.
Today, a girl we'd just pulled from an abusive home handed me a broken porcelain doll.
"Sloane," she whispered, "I found this in the trash. Its legs are broken. Can you fix it?"
The moment I took that doll, I froze. Tears came without warning.
Fifteen years. I finally understood where to start looking.

Chapter 1

That winter morning fifteen years ago, I woke to screaming outside our trailer.

My mother's voice, rough from her usual hangover: "More of this junk! You little whore, how much you think this trash'll get you?"

I didn't even open my eyes. This was routine.

Every weekend, Elise would take her repaired dolls to the town market.

By nightfall, that bag of secondhand junk always turned into crumpled bills and food for me.

That morning before she left, Elise squeezed into my cramped lower bunk and touched my face with cold fingers.

"Be good, Sloane. I'll bring you something nice tonight."

I was too tired—just pulled my thin blanket higher and mumbled something without looking at her.

If I'd known that was the last time, I would've forced my eyes open. I would've memorized every detail of her face.

Instead, twelve hours later, I watched them pull something that barely looked human from the frozen ground outside Black Creek.

I was eleven. Elise was fourteen. She was my only hope of escaping that cesspool.

But there she was—mutilated, half-naked, dumped in the snow.

The drifters and drunks from our trailer park all crowded around, craning their necks, pointing and whispering.

I shoved through them, screaming: "Get back! All of you, get the hell back!"

But I was too late.

Later, the town sheriff told me coldly: "Those idiots contaminated the whole damn scene. Footprints destroyed. Not a single usable piece of evidence."

But worse than the crowd's indifference? My mother.

She didn't shed a single tear for her murdered daughter. She just dove into the slush, tearing at the frozen dirt with her bare hands until her nails split and bled:

"The dolls! Where are the dolls she had?"

Some bald guy from the park kicked her flat into the mud: "You out of your goddamn mind? Your daughter is dead and you're worried about that garbage!"

Nobody helped her up. They just kept watching the show.

Even though Elise was the second girl brutally murdered in Black Creek.

What nobody expected was that from that day on, that foul-mouthed, heartless excuse for a mother completely lost her mind.

Years later, I escaped to an out-of-state boarding school on a full scholarship.

Before college, I visited the state psychiatric hospital one last time.

My mother didn't recognize anyone anymore. But suddenly she grabbed my wrist with surprising strength, muttering under her breath:

"The dolls... did they find them? The dolls Elise had that morning..."

I yanked my hand away in disgust.

But in all the years since, that question wouldn't leave me alone.

Why had she stood beside Elise's mutilated corpse and screamed about dolls with such desperation?

That utterly selfish woman—did she really only care about a bag of broken plastic dolls?

Fifteen years later, I earned my social work license and came back to the state. Back to Black Creek.

Detective Silas Miller, who'd handled Elise's case, showed up at my office.

"Sloane. Look how much you've grown." His voice was rough, worn. "But your sister's case—those murders—still unsolved."

Facing the now white-haired Silas, I gripped my coffee mug so hard my knuckles ached:

"Fifteen years, and I still dream about what they did to her. She was only fourteen... how could anyone do that?"

"It's haunted me for fifteen years too."

Silas rubbed his face, looking grim. "Two girls murdered. Both raped and killed. Elise's legs sawed off. We've been chasing this bastard all this time, and we haven't just failed to catch him—we never even found your sister's legs."

"Why? You promised you'd catch him quickly!"

"We thought we would." Silas frowned deeper. "Because we found the same male DNA on both Elise and the other victim.

"State police had a task force up within hours. Took us months, but we turned that whole town upside down. Compared DNA from 4,000 men. Result? Nothing.

"And the deeper we dug, the less sense it made.

"I've never forgotten it. The task force hit three walls we couldn't get past. Those three things have kept this case cold for fifteen years."

"Three walls?"

"Yeah. Each one blew apart the profile we'd built for this killer."

"Tell me, Silas."

"You have a right to know. But this doesn't leave this room. Understood?"

I nodded firmly. Silas leaned forward, his voice dropping:

"First: Elise's severed legs.

"The ME was certain—the killer took them for some twisted fetish. And it wasn't spontaneous. He came prepared."

"How do you know?"

Silas's eyes went dark. "Crimes of passion, killers grab whatever's close—a rock, some cheap hunting knife. But this bastard brought a saw.

"You can't saw through bone with a knife. Killers bring saws to cut up bodies for disposal. But he left the rest of her untouched. Only took the legs.

"Which means he never planned to hide the body. He brought that saw for one reason—those legs."

"It has to be because of..." My hands started shaking.

In that broken-down trailer park, Elise's legs were unusually long and striking.

Every summer when we'd play by the water spigot, those lowlifes and drunks would stare at them.

I didn't understand then. After years of psych classes, I recognized that look for what it was: sick obsession.

But when I explained, Silas's frown only deepened:

"That's exactly what doesn't add up...

"As far as I know, your sister never left Black Creek her whole life, right?"

"Never." I tried to remember. "Farthest she ever went was the flea market across town on weekends. To sell those broken dolls... Why does that matter?"

Silas stared at me, and something in his eyes made my skin crawl:

"That's the problem."
