Introduction

Mara Vale knew how to save ruined things.

Rotten silk. Smoke-stained lace. Wedding gowns torn by jealous hands or careless lovers. In the old brick shop her mother had left her, Mara could lift a century of dirt from a veil and make every hidden stitch disappear.

But on the night of her own wedding, there was nothing she could save.

Her fiance was in the hotel bridal suite with her stepsister. Her father called her ungrateful when she refused to smile through the betrayal. By midnight, Mara had lost her groom, her family, and the deed to the shop that carried her mother's name.

Then rain drove her into a garage on the wrong side of downtown, where a dangerous young mechanic caught her before she hit the concrete.

Dante Cross smelled like motor oil, wore a dirty white tank under his coveralls, and looked at Mara as if he had been waiting eight years to find her.

Everyone thought he was poor.

Everyone was wrong.

And when Mara's enemies dragged her onto a livestream and called her a thief in front of fifty thousand strangers, the man from the garage stepped between her and the slap meant to break her.

He did not ask permission.

He simply said, "Touch her again, and find out who owns this street."

Chapter 1

Mara Vale found her fiance's hand under her stepsister's dress three minutes before the wedding toast.

The ballroom below was still clinking with forks and champagne. Above it, in the honeymoon suite the hotel had given Evan Cole at a discount because his father knew the owner, Brielle Hayes laughed against his mouth in Mara's ivory robe.

Mara stood in the half-open doorway with her veil pinned crookedly and a silver cake knife still in her hand.

Evan noticed the knife first.

Then he noticed her.

"Mara." He jerked away from Brielle, but not far enough to look innocent. His shirt was open. His wedding band sat on the nightstand beside Brielle's rhinestone clutch. "This is not what you think."

"No?" Mara's voice came out quiet. That was usually when people started to worry. "Because it looks like my husband forgot which bride he married."

"We haven't filed the certificate yet," Brielle said.

She said it sweetly, as if she had found a legal loophole in bad manners. Her blond curls were loose over Mara's robe. Her lipstick was on Evan's neck. On her left hand glittered the antique diamond ring Mara's mother had worn until the day she died.

Mara's gaze stopped there.

"Take off my mother's ring."

Brielle curled her fingers. "Dad said I could borrow it for pictures."

"Dad didn't own it."

"Neither do you anymore," Brielle said.

Evan rubbed his face. "Mara, calm down. You're embarrassing yourself."

The words did something strange to her. They cooled the burning in her chest until her hands became steady. She had spent years learning the difference between a tear and a cut, between silk that could be steamed back into shape and silk ruined by acid. Evan's voice was acid. She had mistaken it for warmth because she had wanted a family so badly.

Mara stepped into the room.

"Give me the ring."

Brielle smiled toward the hallway behind Mara. "Daddy? She's threatening me."

Grant Hayes arrived with his tie undone and his face already red from bourbon. He took in the room, the robe, the ring, Evan's open shirt. He looked at Mara as if she were the scandal.

"Put down the knife."

Mara lowered it onto the dresser. "Your stepdaughter is wearing Mom's ring while sleeping with my groom."

"Don't be vulgar," Grant snapped. "Brielle was upset. Evan was comforting her."

Brielle's eyes shone on command. "She was so cold to me all day, Dad. She kept saying I ruined the photos because my dress looked better."

Mara almost laughed. She had spent forty-six hours restoring Brielle's champagne lace bridesmaid dress after Brielle spilled red wine over it at the rehearsal dinner. Her fingers still carried tiny needle pricks.

Grant turned to Evan. "Is that true?"

Evan looked at the floor. Cowardice could be very clean when it wore a tuxedo. "Mara's been under pressure. She says things."

"I said take off my mother's ring."

Grant's hand cracked across Mara's cheek.

The sound was small compared to the music below, but it ended her childhood anyway.

"Your mother is dead," he said. "And she left me with debt, a failing shop, and a daughter who thinks needlework makes her royalty."

"Vale House is not failing."

"It will be once Evan's family pulls the redevelopment contract." Grant dragged a folded document from his jacket. "Sign the amended deed transfer. The shop goes under Hayes family management. Brielle can run the public side. You can keep sewing in the back if you behave."

Mara stared at him.

There it was. Not shock, not accident, not a drunken mistake. A plan.

Evan reached for a soft tone. "It's best for everyone. Your brand is too old-fashioned. Brielle has followers. We can modernize."

"Modernize," Mara repeated. "You mean sell the building."

Brielle shrugged. "It's just a dusty dress store."

Mara felt the whole room narrow to her mother's ring.

She walked to Brielle, gripped her wrist, and slid the ring off before anyone could stop her. Brielle shrieked as if Mara had broken bone.

Grant grabbed Mara's arm. Evan grabbed the ring. The three of them moved at once, and the cake knife hit the floor with a bright, ridiculous clatter.

By the time hotel security came, Brielle was crying into Evan's chest and Grant was telling everyone his unstable daughter had attacked the bride's sister.

No one asked Mara why the groom had no shirt on.

No one asked why Brielle wore Mara's robe.

Mara walked out through the service stairwell with one cheek burning, no bouquet, no purse, and rain soaking through the hem of the wedding dress she had remade from her mother's gown. The train gathered dirt from the alley behind the hotel. She let it.

Her phone buzzed until it died. Her father's final text glowed for three seconds before the screen went black.

Do not come home unless you are ready to sign.

The old downtown streets blurred under storm water. Neon signs bled red and blue onto the pavement. Mara walked until her shoes split, until the bodice cut her ribs, until the weight of wet satin dragged at her hips like hands trying to pull her under.

She turned down a narrow street because thunder cracked above her and because a yellow light burned under a rolled-up garage door.

Inside, a man stood under the hood of a black Chevelle with a wrench in his hand.

He was younger than she expected for the danger in his face. Broad shoulders. Scar across one eyebrow. Black hair damp at his temples. A hearing aid tucked almost invisibly behind his left ear. His white tank was streaked with grease, and his arms were marked with old burns.

He looked at Mara's ruined dress. Then at her bare hand. Then at the purple shadow blooming on her cheek.

The wrench dropped.

"Who hit you?"

Mara tried to answer. Her mouth shaped the word nobody, because that was what a lifetime with Grant had taught her.

Her knees gave out first.

The last thing she felt was motor oil, warm skin, and a pair of arms catching her before the concrete could.

"Tell me to stop, and I will," he murmured against my ear. "But if you don't..."
He didn't finish. He didn't need to.
I didn't tell him to stop.
Instead, my fingers curled into his shirt, clutching the fabric as though it was my only anchor. Something in him snapped—something he had been holding back for too long. His mouth found mine in a kiss that wasn't tender, but hungry, desperate.
I gasped into him, his hand sliding up to cup my jaw, holding me as if afraid I might vanish.
"You drive me insane," he breathed against my mouth, his lips trailing to my throat. "I can't lose you, Ella. Not you."
My head fell back, a soft sound escaping me as his fingers memorized my waist. My anger melted beneath his desperation.
"James..." I whispered, more plea than protest.
His hand caught mine, fingers threading together tightly. "I'll bring him back. I swear it. Just... don't turn away from me. Please."
The word please—low, ragged, almost broken—undid me more than anything else could have.
