Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Ghost of Maple Street
"Are you sure about this place?" A man asked the woman sitting beside him in the car.
Gio didn't look up from his tablet. His stylus scratched across the screen, leaving lines that wobbled at the edges. The twenty-seven-year-old assistant was too enthusiastic for a project in a town that didn't show up on GPS after three zooms.
"Just drive, Gio."
Inside the rental car that smelled faintly of pine, Lena cracked the window. Hartlow's air rushed in. Wet soil, old exhaust, and something sweet from the bakery at the end of the road mingled to fill her senses.
Three years since she left this town felt longer.
"Left after the church, right?"
"Yes."
"Left as in turn left, or stop on the left side, ma'am?"
"Left after the church."
Gio nodded, his stylus still moving. Lena didn't add that she knew this place. She knew because she used to drive this road every day. Four years. Sometimes crying behind glasses that kept sliding down her nose.
The glasses were gone now.
Hartlow hadn't changed much. Burney's General Store still wore its green paint, only now it peeled at the bottom right corner. Across the street stood a coffee shop that still hung a banner.
BEST COFFEE IN HARTLOW
That banner always made Lena wonder how many competitors it actually had.
The car passed the intersection near the town square. Three people sat on the concrete bench outside the pharmacy. Two women, one man. Lena recognized one of the women. Mrs. Whitmore. Her former neighbor. The first person to spread news of her divorce from Dean Calloway before Lena had even opened her mouth. The bitter memory surfaced in her mind.
"Dean, tell me why everyone is saying we're getting divorced?" Lena had asked, approaching Dean who sat lounging, sipping coffee in their home.
Casually, Dean set his coffee cup on the table, looking at her with a smile behind bright eyes. "Lena, since the news has already spread, I wanted to tell you directly. Yes, I want that divorce."
Lena tensed. The entire world felt shattered, even before Dean explained it in detail. "What do you mean? We've been fine all this time, no problems."
"I want to be honest. I've been holding this in for a long time. I don't love you anymore. You're thin, too thin for a woman. And I met someone more interesting than you. You'll find out." Every word came out of Dean's mouth smoothly, without a shred of guilt.
"Thin and ugly, according to you? You never said this before. So who is this woman more interesting than me?"
"Ma'am, what's wrong?" Gio called out.
Lena snapped back from her past instantly. She turned her gaze back to Mrs. Whitmore, who glanced up briefly. Her eyes followed the rental car for a second.
Then returned to her conversation.
"No, Gio. Nothing."
Lena exhaled. Slow. Her chest loosened slightly, her hands rigid on the bag. Her knuckles had gone pale.
"That the factory?"
Gio pointed ahead. A two-story brick building with half its windows shattered. The white paint had yellowed to gray. Above the main entrance, raised metal letters read CALLO. The rest had fallen off. It used to say CALLOWAY TEXTILES.
"That's it."
She quiet. Sat there.
The last time she saw this building, Dean stood in front of it in a blue shirt and a smile she used to think was only for her. Her ex-husband was inaugurating the new warehouse wing.
Lena stood in the back, among the wives of local officials who were discussing pastry recipes and piano lesson fees. Nobody talked to her. Nobody said hello first.
She was there. But she might as well have been furniture.
Now the building was hers. She bought it with her own money. Money scraped together over three years living in another city, sleeping in a rented room with a window that wouldn't shut properly in the rain, eating the same meal four days running.
Gio was already outside, circling the building, snapping photos. Lena hadn't moved.
Lena still sat there when her phone buzzed.
A message from a number she never saved but knew by heart.
Are you here yet?
Nana Birdie.
The hazel-eyed woman replied to her old neighbor whom she had come to consider family.
Just arrived.
Three seconds. A reply came in.
Library closes at 5. I'll be waiting.
Lena slipped her phone into her pocket. She opened the car door. Her shoe touched Hartlow ground for the first time in three years, and she waited for something to happen. A big feeling. A cinematic moment.
But what happened: her shoe got dusty.
She walked toward the factory door. The padlock key the notary mailed last week felt cold in her hand. It slid into the lock without resistance, as if the building had been expecting her.
Dark inside. The room was full of dust and dampness. Sunlight came through the broken windows. In one corner, a pile of collapsed cardboard boxes, their contents spilled out. Shipping labels. Old invoices. The name Calloway everywhere.
Lena stepped on one of the papers.
But she didn't lift her foot either.
"The structure is solid, actually." Gio appeared from a side door, grinning wide. "Main walls are in good shape. We keep the frame, gut the interior. Six months, maybe done."
"Six months is just right."
"Right."
He looked at her for a moment. Then nodded. "Okay. Six months."
Lena walked to the window facing the main road. From here she could see the square, the pharmacy, and also the concrete bench where Mrs. Whitmore had been sitting.
The town didn't know who had just arrived.
Good. Let it stay that way.
Her phone buzzed again. She had just sent the payment for the renovation. An email notification. Transfer confirmation for the first phase of renovation. The sender name on the screen read Vivienne Ashe.
Lena locked her phone. Slipped it back into her pocket, after her transaction went through.
Outside, Hartlow moved slowly. Unaware that the woman they discarded three years ago was now standing in the heart of their town, buying its biggest property.
She turned from the window. Gio was measuring a wall.
"Gio."
"Yeah?"
"When you set up the meetings with local contractors, suppliers, everyone. The name on every document, every invoice must be changed."
"Vivienne Ashe. I know."
"Good." She looked back at the window. The life she once had still lingered in her thoughts. "Lena Morrigan doesn't exist here anymore. Only Vivienne Ashe exists now."
Gio stopped humming. His stylus hovered above the tablet.
"And if someone recognizes you?"
Lena smiled small, a smile full of scars.
"Then we'll see how good my new face has gotten."
