Introduction
Chapter 1
"Sylvia can't even get heating at her boarding school. What makes you think you deserve a hot shower?" My stepmother's voice was gentle as she poured ice water down my spine—punishment for a sister suffering in Switzerland. For fifteen years I starved, froze, and bled so I could "atone" for her hardship. But one photo hidden in a locked drawer shattered everything I believed: Sylvia wasn't suffering. She was skiing in the Alps, sipping hot cocoa, while I nearly died for a lie. Now I know the truth. The question is—can I survive long enough to make her pay?
——
"Sylvia can't even get heating at her boarding school. What makes you think you deserve a hot shower?"
Victoria's voice was gentle — the kind of gentle you'd use to read a bedtime story. But the bucket in her hands, packed with shards of ice, tipped without hesitation down the length of my spine.
I shook so hard my teeth rattled. I bit down on my lip until I tasted rust in my mouth, and I didn't make a sound.
One noise, and the punishment doubled. That was the rule.
Half an hour ago, I'd just been gnawing on a stale, slightly sour piece of bread in the kitchen. My stomach cramped from the cold, so I quietly ran half a cup of warm water.
Half a cup of warm water. That was all it took for her to grab me by the hair and drag me straight into the bathroom.
This villa had a sprawling living room and a heated indoor pool that never went cold.
To me, it was nothing but a well-decorated torture chamber.
Victoria stood over me in her silk pajamas, looking down at where I'd curled myself against the icy tile. There was no anger in her eyes — just a flat, patient calm that was somehow more frightening than rage.
"Clean yourself up. Then go scrub Sylvia's room. Every corner — spotless. When she comes home from all that suffering, I want her to feel the warmth of this house."
She set the plastic bucket down and walked out of the bathroom. Her slippers tapped a slow, even rhythm against the hardwood floor.
I pulled myself up, trembling, and wrapped a towel around my bruised body. My scalp still throbbed where she'd yanked it. My knee had scraped open during the dragging and was seeping a thin line of blood.
Fifteen years. Every single day, something like this.
I'd started to wonder, in some quiet, resigned corner of my mind, if I'd simply been born to suffer.
Victoria's logic never bent: my sister Sylvia was enduring hardship at a church school in Switzerland, so I — the daughter left behind in comfort — had to pay a matching price. If Sylvia couldn't have fresh fruit, I ate sour bread. If Sylvia prayed out in the freezing wind, I bathed in ice water.
I used to believe her. I bore my punishments willingly, like I was atoning for my sister's suffering.
I changed into a faded old T-shirt and pushed open the door at the end of the second-floor hallway.
This was Sylvia's room — the best bedroom in the house. Since she'd left three years ago, no one was even allowed to touch it carelessly.
I moved the cloth over a desk that didn't have a speck of dust to begin with, my motions mechanical.
My hand caught on something — a hidden panel at the bottom of the drawer. It clicked open.
Inside was a thick stack of letters and a few glossy brochures. The postmarks on the envelopes were Swiss. All addressed to Victoria.
Something made me reach in. I pulled out a photograph that hadn't been sealed in an envelope.
In it, Sylvia stood on a ski slope in a tailored ski suit, designer goggles pushed up on her forehead, grinning wide and unguarded. Her cheeks were flushed from the run, and she was holding a steaming cup of hot cocoa.
My breath caught. My heart skipped.
I flipped open the brochure lying next to it — Saint Moritz Royal Alpine Academy: The World's Premier Resort-Style Education for Young Nobility. Inside were photos of luxury private suites, a Michelin-starred dining room, a year-round indoor thermal spa.
There was no suffering. No unheated dormitory. No prayers in the cold. It had all been a lie.
My hands wouldn't stop shaking. The edge of the photograph pressed a pale line into my fingers.
What had fifteen years of leftover food and freezing baths even been for?
I'd played the fool, aching with guilt over a sister who was, this whole time, living in luxury.
Victoria hadn't been protecting me from indulgence. She simply didn't think I deserved any. She'd built this entire elaborate lie so she could torment me with a clean conscience.
Downstairs, I heard my father Roland's car engine cut off.
In this house, he was the only other adult — and also a man who'd spent years hiding behind a newspaper, blind to everything by choice.
I took a breath, slid the photograph and the brochure back into the hidden compartment, and pushed the panel shut until it looked untouched.
When I came downstairs, Victoria was smiling as she took Roland's briefcase from him. They exchanged a quick kiss.
"Matilda. Is dinner ready?"
Roland didn't even glance at me.
"Yes, dad."
I kept my eyes down. My voice came out steadier than I expected.
My fingers dug into my own palms as I walked past them, burning that photograph of the ski slope into the back of my mind.
