Introduction

For eight years, I’ve been invisible in my own home.
No cake. No presents. Nobody remembers I’m allergic to the shrimp I cook every week. My husband, Derek, a respected cardiologist, hides behind his silence. My six-year-old son has learned to look right through me. And my mother-in-law, Barbara, has a "weak heart" that flares up every time I open my mouth.
So on my thirty-third birthday, when my best friend sends dinner from Fiorella’s, the restaurant I haven’t let myself set foot in since my wedding, it should be one small, good thing.
By the time I set the table, my family has eaten every bite.
The next day, Barbara clutches her chest in front of her entire card club, and suddenly I’m the monster who nearly killed her. Derek bundles his mother and our son into the car and leaves me standing in the driveway, drowning in whispers.
So I follow them.
From the back seat of a stranger’s car, I watch my "dying" mother-in-law stroll into Fiorella’s, laughing. Derek is right behind her. And my little boy asks if they can play "the sick game" again.
Eight years of lies, and I was the only one in this family who didn’t know it was a game.
Now I’m done playing.

Chapter 1

Claire's POV

——

On my thirty-third birthday, with the whole family home for once, I finally worked up the nerve.

"I was thinking we could go out tonight. To celebrate."

Eight years of marriage. Eight birthdays. Not one celebrated. Not one gift.

My mother-in-law, Barbara, kept thumbing out texts to her card club as if she hadn’t heard a word. My six-year-old, Ethan, was whining that it was his turn on the big TV.

I looked at Derek. Dr. Derek Hastings, cardiologist, the man whose word was law in this house. If anyone could speak up for me, it was him.

He frowned. "Nobody actually likes restaurant food. Why don’t you just make something?"

So I let it go.

A little later, my phone buzzed. Tessa, my best friend.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Sent you dinner from Fiorella’s. Got the family-size tray so there’s enough for everybody. Eat a LOT 🎉

I hadn’t eaten at Fiorella’s once since my wedding. Nobody had ever told me I couldn’t. I just never let myself.

When the delivery arrived, my spirits lifted more than I expected. I set the foil tray in the middle of the dining table and slipped into the kitchen to plate the dinner I’d already cooked.

When I came back out, the tray was empty.

Nothing left but a few sprigs of rosemary stuck to the foil.

Barbara was dabbing grease from her lips, announcing she was off to her card game. Ethan was licking sauce off his fingers, already reaching for his controller.

And at the head of the table sat the man who’d said nobody actually likes restaurant food.

He barely glanced up. "You took forever. Everybody’s done. You can have whatever’s left. I’m going to lie down."

The bedroom door clicked shut.

I stared at the greasy wreckage. The smell of garlic and red-wine braise still hung in the air, the only proof the food had ever been there.

Derek always said takeout didn’t agree with him, so I’d gone out of my way to cook tonight. Garlic butter shrimp for him and Ethan. Liver and onions, because Barbara had specifically asked for it.

I’d told myself: It’s my birthday. Everyone gets something they love, we have one nice, peaceful evening together, and that can be my celebration.

Now the only food left on the table was the food I’d made.

Shrimp. I’m allergic to shellfish.

Liver. I’ve hated it since I was a little girl.

Nobody remembered what I liked. Nobody had thought to save me a single bite of the dinner that had been sent for me.

Eight years married, and I’d become the least important person in my own home. Practically invisible.

My phone lit up with a video call. Tessa Albright.

I wiped my face and answered.

"Claire! Happy birthday!"

She was on a rooftop in Berlin at one in the morning, sparklers fizzing behind her, a party roaring in the background. With one hand pressed over her ear, she was practically shouting. "How was Fiorella’s? I told them to send the big one. I know you’ve got a full house, and I didn’t want anybody going hungry!"

I looked at the empty tray. A dull ache pinched beneath my ribs.

I turned back to the screen and forced a smile. "You’re so sweet. It was amazing. It’s all gone."

"Already?" She laughed. "That was a ton of food! Your family ate the whole thing?"

"Yep."

All of them. Except me.

Tessa didn’t notice a thing. "Good! I was worried. It’s been so long, I thought maybe you’d gone off it. Next time I’m back in Linden City, we’re going together. Just us."

Derek walked out for a glass of water just in time to hear it.

His face darkened.

"Was that your bestie Tessa again?" He jammed his glass against the fridge dispenser. "Figures. No wonder you were angling to go out tonight. Fiorella’s is two hundred bucks a head, minimum. But hey, it’s easy to blow every dime on yourself when you’ve got no husband and zero responsibilities. I bust my ass eighty hours a week to keep this family afloat, and she doesn’t know shit about the real world. Stop letting her put garbage in your head."

The line went quiet.

Heat flooded up my neck. My lips trembled. "Derek. What is wrong with you?"

He didn’t answer. He finished filling his glass as if he hadn’t said a thing and walked away.

My eyes stung. I started after him.

"Claire, hey. Don’t."

Tessa stopped me first.

"It’s so loud up here, I honestly didn’t catch what he said." She smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. "You two have been together eight years. Don’t fight over me, okay?"

For the sake of my marriage, she backed down first. She pretended she hadn’t heard a single ugly word.

And I remembered something I’d read once.

It’s always the people who love you who bend first.
