But Lin Wanyu was not her name.
The real Lin Wanyu was my grandmother. She died in a remote village without legal papers, a marked grave, or anyone willing to admit who she was.
When the impostors’ grandson demanded a position at my law firm, I told him no.

By noon, I had opened the file that could take everything from them.
Chapter 1
The world honored Professor Guo Zhenghua for his devotion to justice—and praised his wife, Lin Wanyu, as a woman of rare integrity.
But Lin Wanyu was not her name.
The real Lin Wanyu was my grandmother. She died in a remote village without legal papers, a marked grave, or anyone willing to admit who she was.
When the impostors’ grandson demanded a position at my law firm, I told him no.
By morning, his family had taken my career.
By noon, I had opened the file that could take everything from them.

“His heart and lungs are failing. There’s nothing more we can do. Prepare the injection.”
The veterinarian stepped away from the horse and shook his head.
The animal on the floor was Frostline, a champion Thoroughbred insured for more money than I expected to earn in my entire life.
And inside my skull, he was screaming.
“Failing, my ass! There’s a rock under my right front shoe, you polished cue ball! It hurts too much to stand!”
I pushed through the crowd, dropped beside his foreleg, and reached for the shoe.
People shouted at me to stop.
Frostline shouted louder.
“Three days! I’ve been telling these idiots for three days!”
I pulled the shoe. A sharp stone, dark with blood, was wedged against the frog of his hoof.
The moment I removed it, his breathing eased.
Twenty seconds later, the horse everyone had been ready to euthanize stood up.
Nobody spoke.
Frostline lowered his head and rubbed his nose against my shoulder.
“You’re not completely useless,” he said. “The rest of them are.”
That was the day my life changed.
It was also the day I learned that saving an animal did not make it grateful enough to become polite.
My name is Ethan Hale. I was twenty-four, had a degree in veterinary technology, and worked as temporary help at a private stable outside Lexington, Kentucky.
On paper, I was an assistant animal-care technician.
In practice, I shoveled manure.
I had shoveled it for eight months.
An adult horse produces roughly fifty pounds of manure a day. We had thirty-two horses. You can do the math. I had plenty of time to do it while pushing a wheelbarrow.
I had ended up there because of one bad interview.
The hiring veterinarian asked, “What’s the most important quality in animal medicine?”
I said, “Understanding what the animal is trying to tell you.”
He laughed as if I had announced that my clinical method involved tarot cards.
The problem was, I had meant it literally.
Three months earlier, after a fever that kept me in bed for nearly a week, I had started hearing animals.
Not sounds. Thoughts shaped into words, delivered straight into my head whether I wanted them or not.
At first I thought the fever had cooked my brain.
Then Stall Seven’s chestnut gelding watched me clean his stall and said, “You missed a pile in the corner. The old one. Probably has a rich, mature flavor.”
The mutt chained near the office greeted me every morning with, “You again? Do you not have a home?”
I had a home. Technically. It was a partitioned room over a tire shop, and my parents called every Sunday to ask if I had met a nice woman yet.
I had not.
Manure was not the aphrodisiac people imagined.
The Frostline incident happened during a Saturday invitational at Bluegrass Crown Racing Club. Our regular veterinarian had a migraine, so the stable owner sent me with strict instructions.
“Stand in the back. Don’t touch anything expensive. Don’t embarrass me.”
At the club, the parking lot glittered with imported cars. Owners wore watches worth more than our barn. I wore a faded polo and boots bearing evidence of my morning shift.
I was happy to be ignored until shouting broke out near Barn Three.
Frostline lay on the rubber floor, soaked with sweat, kicking hard enough to rattle the walls. Foam hung around his mouth. His eyes rolled white.
Four veterinarians surrounded him. The man in charge was Dr. Tobias Sloan, chief veterinarian for Crown Equine Partners and the proud owner of a head so bald it reflected the overhead lights.
He removed his stethoscope and addressed the horse’s owner, Marcus Wynn.
“Severe arrhythmia, respiratory distress, temperature one-oh-six point three. It presents as acute cardiopulmonary failure. Surgery would have less than a five-percent chance, and he could arrest under anesthesia. Humane euthanasia is my recommendation.”
Marcus went gray. Frostline had won the regional championship the previous year. He was the centerpiece of Marcus’s breeding program, but the look on Marcus’s face had nothing to do with money.
“He passed his exam last month,” Marcus said. “Check again. Please.”
Dr. Sloan sighed with professional sorrow. “I understand. But sometimes the kindest thing is to let go.”
“Let go of this!” Frostline roared inside my head. “I am not dying! My foot hurts!”
An assistant uncapped the syringe.
Frostline’s anger broke.
“No. Please. Look at my foot. It’s one rock. Don’t kill me for one rock.”
I did not know him. I had no license, no authority, and no explanation that would keep me out of a psychiatric evaluation.
But I was the only person in the barn who understood him.
“Wait.”
Every face turned toward me.
An assistant blocked my path. “Who are you?”
I went around him.
“Sir, step away from the horse.”
I crouched and caught Frostline’s right front leg. He flinched.
“You hear me?” he whispered.
I looked into his eye, then reached for my farrier’s pull-offs.
Dr. Sloan grabbed my shoulder. “What do you think you’re doing? That horse could arrest. Are you even licensed?”
“No,” I said. “But I know how to pull a shoe.”
I loosened the nails one at a time. Frostline trembled in my grip.
“Easy,” he said. “That hurts. Keep going, but easy.”
The shoe came free.
A jagged stone the size of my thumbnail sat between the metal and the sensitive frog. Its point had cut deep enough to leave a ring of blood.
The barn went silent.
I eased the stone out.
Frostline convulsed once. Then his breaths slowed. His eyes focused. The foam stopped building around his mouth.
An assistant pressed the stethoscope to his chest.
“Rhythm’s stabilizing.”
Five seconds. Ten. Twenty.
Frostline sneezed hard enough to spray Dr. Sloan’s immaculate trousers, planted his feet, and stood.
The syringe fell from Dr. Sloan’s hand.
Marcus came toward me with red eyes. “What’s your name?”
“Ethan Hale.”
“Where do you practice?”
I considered lying.
“I shovel manure.”
Marcus stared at me.
Dr. Sloan stared at me.
The whole barn stared at me.
Frostline threw back his head and laughed.
“The manure boy saved me. That is humiliating for everyone except the manure boy.”
I wanted to tell him to shut up.
Instead, I rubbed his neck while the richest people I had ever seen stood around us in stunned silence.

The Rejected Luna’s Rise
Luna Ariana Volkstane slid the formal rejection request across the table. "Let's end this bond. It's better for you, me, and your first love."
He just smirked. "You want me to reject you? You think you can break our bond that easily?"
So she did. Ariana cut ties with him completely, poured herself into her career, and rose to global fame as a legendary healer, her knowledge of rare herbs, wolf anatomy, and ancient magic sought after across continents.
The powerful suitors lined up. The Alpha of an overseas empire whispered, "Ariana, hurry up and perform the severing ritual. I can't wait to claim you." A powerful pack leader vowed, "I'll be there with you the day you break the bond." A legendary wolf attorney promised, "I'll handle your rejection case with the pack council myself."
Ariana just rubbed her temples. It's not that she didn't want the split, she wanted it more than anything, it's just that the Alpha she was mated to refused to let go.
Finally, she announced, "Whoever can officially get me rejected, I'll put you at the head table of my bond-breaking celebration."
Not long after, Alpha Damian was served the official rejection request right in the middle of an emergency pack council meeting. That same afternoon, he was attacked by rogues at the gates of his own territory.
When Ariana showed up at the pack infirmary with healing herbs, she repeated calmly, "Let's sever the mate bond. It's better for you, me, and everyone else."
But the cold, untouchable Alpha pulled her into his arms, his eyes blood-red with fury. "You want me to reject you? Over my dead body."
Taming the bully
