Introduction

I was cleaning coffee from my husband's suit sleeve when the news alert lit up my phone: Vivian Lane had come home, and Adrian Shaw had gone to the airport himself to meet her.

In the photo, he wore the charcoal suit I had pressed that morning.

He held her suitcase with one hand and looked at her with a smile I had spent three years trying to earn.

That was the first time I understood I had not been building a marriage.

I had been keeping someone else's place warm.

Chapter 1

I was cleaning coffee from my husband's suit sleeve when the news alert lit up my phone: Vivian Lane had come home, and Adrian Shaw had gone to the airport himself to meet her.

In the photo, he wore the charcoal suit I had pressed that morning.

He held her suitcase with one hand and looked at her with a smile I had spent three years trying to earn.

That was the first time I understood I had not been building a marriage.

I had been keeping someone else's place warm.

The stain on Adrian's cuff had already dried into the wool.

I sprayed the cleaner twice, watched white foam spread over the brown mark, and rubbed the fabric with the small brush I kept in the laundry room. The phone kept glowing on the counter beside me.

Vivian Lane Returns to New York. Adrian Shaw Personally Meets Former Fiancee at JFK.

I should have turned the phone facedown. I should have ignored it. I had practiced ignoring things for three years.

Instead, I tapped the screen.

The photograph was bright and cruel. Airport glass. Late-afternoon light. Vivian Lane in a cream coat, one hand tucked into her loose hair, the other resting on the handle of a designer carry-on. Adrian stood beside her in the charcoal suit I had ironed before breakfast. He had taken the suitcase from her. His shoulders were angled toward her, and he was smiling.

Not politely. Not for the cameras.

Gently.

I pressed the lock button and went back to the sleeve.

The foam hissed under my fingers. It covered the stain so thoroughly that, for a second, I could pretend the mark had never been there. That was what I had done with Vivian all along. I had covered up every trace of her. The photograph tucked in Adrian's study drawer. The name he murmured once when he was drunk. The way his face closed whenever I asked about college, old friends, or why the letter L was still tattooed near his right hip.

I had covered everything and called it patience.

Adrian came home after midnight.

I heard the garage door first, then his steps in the foyer. I had left the suit jacket on the rack by the mudroom. He saw it and paused.

"You got the coffee out," he said.

"Most of it. The dry cleaner can get the rest."

He loosened his tie. There was perfume on him, sweet and floral, not the cedar soap he used. Vivian used to wear gardenia. I knew that because a bottle of it had sat for years at the back of a cabinet in our primary bathroom, unopened but never thrown away.

"There's a benefit tomorrow night," he said. "You're coming with me."

Adrian rarely brought me to public events unless a wife was useful and Vivian was not available. I folded the cleaning cloth and set it in the sink.

"Black tie?"

"Close enough. Just don't go overboard." He looked away. "Vivian will be there."

There it was. The real instruction.

Show up. Look the part. Don't compete.

"All right," I said.

He studied me as if he had expected something louder. "You're not going to ask?"

"Ask what? If you had a nice time picking her up? If the reporters called before or after you grabbed her bag?"

His jaw tightened. For a moment I thought he might tell me the truth. Then he crossed the kitchen, stood behind me, and put his arms around my waist.

"Nora," he said. He almost never used my name like that. "We might be doing a deal with the Lanes. Vivian just got back. It was just business."

His breath warmed the side of my neck. Once, that would have been enough. I would have leaned back, let him kiss the doubt out of me, and told myself he had chosen me because I was the woman in his house, in his bed, wearing his ring.

But the airport photo was too clear.

I stepped out of his arms.

"I'll run you a bath."

He did not follow me to the bathroom. I turned on the water and let the noise fill the room.

Steam rose. I sat on the closed toilet lid and looked at my hands. There was a faint chemical smell on my skin from the cleaner. No matter how many times I rinsed, it stayed.

So did the picture of his smile.

They were already married for three years when Alpha Damian Zeus’s long-lost first love, Lily, returned bringing along a five-year-old pup.

Luna Ariana Volkstane slid the formal rejection request across the table. "Let's end this bond. It's better for you, me, and your first love."

He just smirked. "You want me to reject you? You think you can break our bond that easily?"

So she did. Ariana cut ties with him completely, poured herself into her career, and rose to global fame as a legendary healer, her knowledge of rare herbs, wolf anatomy, and ancient magic sought after across continents.

The powerful suitors lined up. The Alpha of an overseas empire whispered, "Ariana, hurry up and perform the severing ritual. I can't wait to claim you." A powerful pack leader vowed, "I'll be there with you the day you break the bond." A legendary wolf attorney promised, "I'll handle your rejection case with the pack council myself."

Ariana just rubbed her temples. It's not that she didn't want the split, she wanted it more than anything, it's just that the Alpha she was mated to refused to let go.

Finally, she announced, "Whoever can officially get me rejected, I'll put you at the head table of my bond-breaking celebration."

Not long after, Alpha Damian was served the official rejection request right in the middle of an emergency pack council meeting. That same afternoon, he was attacked by rogues at the gates of his own territory.

When Ariana showed up at the pack infirmary with healing herbs, she repeated calmly, "Let's sever the mate bond. It's better for you, me, and everyone else."

But the cold, untouchable Alpha pulled her into his arms, his eyes blood-red with fury. "You want me to reject you? Over my dead body."
