My Son Called Her Mom
219 Views · Ongoing · August
My son came home with a trophy from a regional figure skating competition.
To thank his coach, I baked her a batch of cookies.
She just looked at me, confused. "My whole family was in Europe all summer. I didn't teach a single kid."
My smile froze.
When I asked my son about it, he slammed his door in my face. "Why do you have to ask so many questions? I got the trophy, didn't I?"
A second later, I noticed the essay he'd left on the kitchen table.
The title was "My Mom."
For a moment, my heart warmed. Then I read further, and went cold all over.
The "mom" who spent the summer with him in that essay loved wearing white dresses. I never wear white. Not with all the housework I do.
Before school started, they'd gone out of town together to watch a competition. That was the exact weekend my husband told me he was away on business.
My husband was lying. And my son had learned to lie right along with him.
They didn't just have a second family out there. My son had accepted a new mom.
That night, my son was heading out to "practice" again, and my husband offered to drive him.
I smiled and watched them go.
If that other home was so wonderful, then this one didn't need to exist.
