Introduction

She betrayed him. He destroyed her. And death may not be enough to separate them.

Eve Carter's testimony sent Sean Winters to prison for three years. When he emerged as Wall Street's most ruthless CEO, his vengeance was calculated and complete—seizing custody of the daughter she hid from him and watching her suffer with cold satisfaction.

What Sean doesn't know: Eve was forced to lie by her powerful mayor father. What Eve can't tell him: she's dying of terminal cancer with six months left to live.

Their daughter Grace, a bright-eyed six-year-old with a failing heart, builds fairy houses and whispers to her stuffed animals about the mommy and daddy who never smile together. Her innocent laughter masks the tragic legacy of two broken families.

When Eve takes a knife meant for Sean, his dismissive words cut deeper than the blade: "We're even now."

But nothing is even in a game rigged by fate.

After Eve chooses death over suffering, leaving behind a devastating confession, Sean's world shatters. A year later, still broken and raising their daughter alone, he glimpses honey-blonde hair in a crowd and hears that haunting laugh.

Is Eve defying death itself to reclaim what was stolen? Or will the truth destroy what remains of Sean's sanity when he discovers what really happened six years ago? Read now to find out!

Chapter 1

EVE

I'm Eve Carter, daughter of Robert Carter, the mayor of LR City. On paper, I should've been living the American dream—private schools, family connections, Instagram-perfect life. Reality stood miles from that fantasy.

At 5'6" with amber eyes, I studied music at Columbia. I started piano at four and developed perfect pitch, but my talents were just ornaments for my father's political career. My education, my looks—all carefully cultivated accessories for his public image.

My mother ended up in a persistent vegetative state after a "fall" down our mansion's staircase. This happened right after she threatened my father with divorce. Suspicious timing? Absolutely. Within six months, Dad moved his mistress Jessica into our home. Nine months later, my half-brother Ryan was born.

Dad raised Ryan as the crown prince he never had. I always knew the kid would cause serious trouble someday—just never imagined I'd pay the price. And what a price it was: Sean Winters.

According to my father, Sean was "just the driver's kid"—someone beneath our social circle. But Sean defied every expectation. While Ryan crashed luxury cars and got bailed out of trouble, Sean aced advanced placement classes and won science competitions. When we fell in love, it shattered everyone's plans. Especially my father's.

June 6th, my birthday. The night everything changed.

Sean's lips traveled slowly down my neck as moonlight filtered through the blinds of his off-campus apartment. The twin bed creaked beneath us, a stark contrast to my California king at home, but I wouldn't have traded this moment for anything.

His studio apartment revealed his character—textbooks stacked neatly beside a worn desk, scholarship certificates pinned carefully on corkboard, a photo of us at the winter formal I'd snuck out to attend.

"You sure about this?" he whispered, his dark eyes searching mine for any hesitation.

I nodded, my heartbeat drumming so loudly I was certain he could hear it. His calloused hands moved across my skin with unexpected tenderness.

"It might hurt," he cautioned, brushing hair from my face with a gentleness that made my chest ache.

"I want this," I replied, pulling him closer. "I want you."

He moved carefully, checking my reactions with each new step. The discomfort blended with something deeper, something overwhelming. In his cramped apartment, surrounded by secondhand furniture, we created something profound.

As we moved together, I clutched his shoulders, suddenly terrified by the intensity of what I was feeling.

"Sean," I gasped, "will we be together forever?"

His eyes locked with mine, sweat beading on his forehead. No flowery promises, no elaborate declarations. Just one word, solid as bedrock: "Yes."

"Sean Winters, I love you." The words escaped before I could analyze them.

He gathered me against him, his heart pounding against mine. His voice was rough when he spoke against my ear: "Eve, you're mine... always will be."

Forever. What a joke that word turned out to be.

I once believed promises made naked carried extra weight. Truth is, they break even easier. We searched for eternity in each other's arms that night, blind to the countdown already begun.

Six weeks later, I sat in the witness box with sweaty palms and a rock in my stomach. Princeton County Courthouse was packed—local press in the back, curious students filling the gallery. The air conditioning blasted, but I couldn't stop sweating through my modest blue dress—the one my father's PR advisor had selected for "maximum sympathy."

Sean sat at the defense table, the orange jumpsuit hanging loosely on his frame. He'd lost weight during the two weeks of pre-trial detention. His lawyer—some overworked public defender with a crooked tie—kept whispering frantically in his ear. Sean wasn't listening. He was looking straight at me, his expression unreadable.

"Ms. Carter," Judge Harmon said, adjusting his glasses, "please confirm: Were you with the defendant, Sean Winters, on Princeton campus the night of June 6th?"

The microphone amplified my breathing. June 6th. My birthday. The night I gave Sean everything. The night I thought would be the beginning of our story, not the end.

"Yes, Your Honor."

"And did you witness Mr. Winters assault another student at the campus party later that night, resulting in severe injuries?"

My throat tightened. The truth burned inside me. Ryan—my entitled half-brother with his private school swagger and daddy's platinum credit card—was the one who'd beaten that scholarship student nearly to death. Not Sean. Never Sean.

But my father had made the choice brutally simple: "Either your boyfriend goes to prison, or your mother's life support gets 'complicated.'" His exact words.

Sean was still watching me, a flicker of hope in his eyes. This brilliant guy who'd fought his way from nothing to Princeton, who tutored freshmen for extra cash, who could solve differential equations in his head—he still believed in me.

"Ms. Carter?" The judge's impatience cut through my thoughts.

I avoided looking at my father in the gallery. Instead, I stared at the New Jersey state seal on the wall.

"Yes," I said, the word poisoned my mouth. "At approximately 10 PM on June 6th, I witnessed Sean Winters assault the victim at the Princeton campus party."

The courtroom erupted in whispers. I forced myself to look at Sean.

It happened in an instant—the light in his eyes didn't dim gradually. It snuffed out as someone had flipped a switch. His expression hardened into something I'd never seen before, something that didn't belong on his face. In that moment, I knew: the Sean I loved had just died, and I was his executioner.

"Mr. Winters," the judge asked, "do you have anything to say in your defense?"

Sean's eyes never left mine. "No, Your Honor," he replied, voice devoid of emotion. "I have nothing to say."

The judge nodded, consulting his notes. "Given the severity of the injuries, the victim's potential long-term disabilities, and your previous documented conflicts with the victim, I sentence you to three years in state prison and a fine of fifty thousand dollars."

The gavel came down with a crack that echoed through my bones.

As officers moved to escort Sean out, he finally looked away from me. The prosecutors shook hands. My father nodded slightly from his seat. Mission accomplished.

Three days later, I sat in the county jail's visiting room, a thick pane of glass separating me from Sean. We both held old-school phone receivers—no fancy video calls for county inmates.

"I'll find a way to fix this," I promised, pressing my palm against the cold glass. "I'll tell the truth, Sean. I swear I will."

He stared back, dark circles under his eyes, face gaunt. "Eve Carter," he said, my name sounding filthy in his mouth, "we're done."

"Sean, please listen—"

"Shut up." He pulled something from his pocket—my sketchbook. The one filled with drawings I'd made of him over our together. Drawings of him sleeping, laughing, studying. Drawings he once said he'd keep forever.

"Remember this?" he asked, voice flat.

Without waiting for an answer, he began tearing pages. Methodically. One by one. Each rip echoed through the receiver.

"Sean, stop—" My voice broke.

"Sean and Eve," he said coldly. "It's over. Drop this concerned girlfriend act. Go back to your mansion and your privileged life. I'll rot here as your father wanted."

"I'm sorry," I whispered, tears streaming down my face. "I had no choice."

"There's always a choice." He crushed the torn papers in his fist. "You made yours."

"Please—"

"We're finished. Thanks to you." Each word landed as a slap.

Thanks. To. You.

The guard announced visiting hours were over. Sean stood, deliberately stepping on the scattered pieces of my artwork.

"Sean!" I called, slamming my palm against the glass.

He walked away without looking back.

I pressed the phone receiver tightly to my mouth, whispering words he would never hear: "I'm pregnant. We're having a baby, Sean."

The guard motioned for me to leave. I hung up the phone, my hand shaking.

Forever. An empty promise now buried beneath betrayal and loss.

The life growing inside me—our daughter—would be my atonement. I'd chosen my mother over Sean, sacrificing his freedom and our love. Now I carried the weight of two lives ruined, one saved, and one just beginning.

My father had forced an impossible choice. He never knew he'd made me choose between two parents.

I placed my hand on my stomach. Sean might hate me forever, but part of him would live on in this child—the only piece of him I could still protect.

Somehow, someday, I would make things right. Even if it meant destroying my father.

Some debts can never be repaid. But this one... I would spend my life trying.
