A night to remember

The candles were burning low as he looked into the flames. The room was over crowded with people. Sounds of dancing echoed through the house, making his head hurt. His waistcoat clung tight to his upper body, the frock coat was open to the air. From the chair he was seated in he could see the ladies and gentlemen dancing to the music. During the summer balls he couldn't bear the heat from dancing. It made sweat trail down his face into his eyes.
Many of the young women were far from his taste not handsome enough. It seemed to him that he needed to find a pretty young woman and make her his wife. Truth was that he didn’t want to marry just any woman, many of them only wanted to get close to him to get his money. After the forth young woman gave him the longing eyes he stood to go out to get some fresh air. The wood floors creaked under his weight as he made his escape.
Two large glass doors were open to the night air. The flag stones were damp from the dew. He walked over to the railing that faced out to the gardens. The night air was cooler then inside, but he missed winter.
This life was getting boring. He needed something to brighten his days and liven his nights. Many of the young men he would spend time with had suggested getting a wife and having a child or three. He didn’t like the idea of having children. They always seemed to let you down.
“Lord Alexander Chetwood, out in the cool night air alone.” Dorcas called from the house.
Alex knew that voice, it had been in his ear for a while now. Why did she have to follow him outside? Alex rolled his eyes up to the night sky before he turned to see the young heiress Dorcas Beckett coming toward him. Of all the young women to follow him, she was his least favorite. Maybe it was the face that she was so forward or that she didn't roam around the ballroom with a group of young woman with her. What ever it was, he wasn't interested.
