Crawl for His Mother? I Made Her
Juniper Marlow · Completed · 4.8k Words
Introduction
Her terms: hands and knees through six inches of mud and manure. A metal headgate clamped around my neck at the end. That was the price of walking through her front door.
I said no.
Then forty Ashcrofts surrounded the truck. My phone had zero signal. My family was blocked behind a hay baler a quarter mile back. And the man I'd spent three years with looked me in the eye and said: "You're going through that chute today. Crawling or walking — pick one."
They cornered my best friend. Threw hog blood on the windshield. Thought nobody was coming for me.
They didn't know about the CB radio under the console — or the ten cousins listening on the other end.
Chapter 1
I was marrying Boone Ashcroft that morning. Before I could even step out of the truck, his mother Verlene walked up with a rope over her shoulder.
Behind her — the cattle chute. Narrow iron alley, headgate at the far end, six inches of mud and manure pooled at the bottom. I could smell it through the window.
"Any woman marrying into this family goes through the chute first." Verlene stopped at my door and tapped the rope against her palm. "Hands and knees, start to finish. Gate clamps your neck at the end — just for a second. So everybody can see what you're made of."
She dropped her voice. "Mud'll ruin your dress, but dresses wash."
Boone's father Roy came up behind her. Thumbs in his belt, straw hat low. "Ain't personal, Briar. Just how things work out here. Woman who can take a little dirt can take this family."
The dress was four thousand dollars. Mom drove to three stores to find it.
They knew that.
Boone pressed close to the window from outside, keeping his voice down so his parents wouldn't hear. He had that slow drawl going — the one he always used when he wanted me to give in.
"It's nothing, babe. Thirty seconds in the mud and we're done. Mom's being Mom. You know how she is."
"You knew about this."
He looked away. Didn't deny it.
"Just do it. Don't turn this into a whole thing."
"What if I say no?"
Roy's face went flat. "Then you're not walking through my door. A bride who won't come inside on her own wedding day — that ain't a wife. That's a debt I need settled."
I looked at the mud in the chute. Looked at Verlene's clean boots.
"Funny. My family's got a tradition too."
Verlene blinked. "What tradition?"
"Groom's parents kneel in the mud first. Bride walks over their backs. Means she won't bow to anyone under that roof." I held her stare. "Want to go first, or should Roy?"
Everything dropped off her face at once.
"You mouthy little —" Her voice went raw. "Three generations of Ashcroft women went through that chute without a damn word. And some girl from town thinks she's too good for it?"
She whistled toward the barn. One note.
Doors banged open. Ranch hands first, then cousins, then uncles I'd never seen. They spread across the yard and sealed every gap between the fences and the truck. Thirty, forty people.
All Ashcrofts.
I turned back to Boone. The drawl was gone. The soft eyes were gone. When he talked, it was flat and fast — a voice I'd never heard in three years.
"Your daddy paid sixty thousand toward this ranch's bank note. Wedding gift. That money's gone, Briar. Every invitation's out. Every cousin I've got is standing in this yard right now."
He grabbed the door handle from outside. Knuckles white.
"You're going through that chute today. Walking or crawling — pick one."
Three years. Three years of soft voice and opened doors. And he said it without blinking once.
One of the hands nudged the guy beside him. "She'll settle once they run her through. Always do."
The yard laughed. My hands were shaking when I picked up my phone. No bars. The back forty was a dead zone — whole county knew it. I just hadn't thought about it until now.
In the rearview, our caravan sat boxed in a quarter mile back. Hay baler across the ranch road. Ashcroft cousins at the gate, collecting cash from our side before they'd let anyone pass. My family couldn't see or hear a thing from up here.
No signal. No way out. Nobody coming.
He set this up.
I reached for the center console — anything.
Click. All four locks popped at once.
Boone had slipped his hand through the window gap and hit the unlock button.
He looked at me through the glass. Smiling.
