Introduction

At her own birthday banquet, another woman was the star of the night.
She stood at the door and watched her husband crown his "friend" with a diamond-studded tiara — the very gift she thought was meant for her.
On the stage, he smiled tenderly. Their daughter laughed and danced. She alone was the uninvited stranger.
For six years, she gave up a brilliant research career to become his housewife — and received not a single word of gratitude.
When her heart finally went cold, she walked away, leaving nothing behind but a divorce agreement.
Then she returned to the lab — and stunned the world as a leading scientist. No more shrinking herself for anyone. She became herself again.
And the man who once treated her like air cornered her with red-rimmed eyes:
"Darling, I was wrong. Please come home."

Chapter 1

At her own birthday party, someone else had taken her place as the main focus.

At the entrance to the banquet hall, Daisy Hart saw another woman standing between her husband and daughter on the center stage, looking like a happy family of three.

It felt like someone had stabbed her hard. She gripped the cold metal door frame, unable to move for a moment.

She had arrived half an hour late because of an issue at the lab. She had even jogged part of the way to make it on time, and her cheeks were still flushed from the rush.

On the way, she had already gone over how she would apologize to the guests for being. But she never expected that by the time she arrived, the spotlight would already belong to another lady.

Her husband Vincent Black held a platinum tiara encrusted with diamonds, gently placing it on Vanessa Drake's head.

A week ago, Daisy had seen him order this gift and thought it was her birthday present.

He leaned forward slightly, his dark gray suit perfectly tailored, making his shoulders look straight and broad. The golden lights cast a glow around him, so handsome it was hard to look away.

The tiara rested on Vanessa's chestnut curls. Vincent looked focused, with a hint of a gentle smile at the corner of his lips, an expression Daisy had never seen before.

"Congratulations," he said softly.

The whole room burst into a warm applause. Their daughter Luna Black bounced over to Vanessa, her voice clear and bright. "Auntie Vanessa, congratulations on signing the big project."

She was only six and didn't really understand what signing a project meant. She was simply repeating what she had heard adults say.

Then Luna presented a gift box to Vanessa. "This is a crystal necklace I made myself. I hope you like it!"

Daisy's vision gradually blurred. Her body swayed slightly as a sharp pain rose from her throat into her chest, nearly making her faint.

The necklace was made by her daughter, who had picked out each crystal bead and strung them together herself, even covering Daisy's eyes to have her try it on.

She had thought it was a surprise from her daughter.

Taking a deep breath, Daisy walked into the banquet hall.

Because she'd rushed over, a strand of hair had fallen loose by her neck.

Her simple black dress was understated and elegant, a stark contrast to Vanessa's bright red outfit.

When the guests saw her, they gradually quieted down, with occasional whispers.

"What's she doing here? Bad luck..."

"Using dirty tricks to marry into the Blacks, she should just hide away like a housewife. Why's she trying to get attention?"

"Mr. Black doesn't even respect her, yet she still pushes herself forward."

"If it weren't for her, Miss Drake would be Mrs. Black. What a shame, they were childhood sweethearts..."

The gossip stabbed into Daisy's heart like knives. The smile on her face was barely holding, tears threatening to fall.

That night was an accident, she was a victim too. Why did everyone blame her? If Old Mr. Black hadn't insisted, she never would have thought she deserved to marry into the Blacks.

"Luna." Standing before the three of them, Daisy called her daughter's name several times before she turned around.

The smile on her cute little face disappeared instantly. "Why are you here?"

"Today is Mommy's birthday." Ignoring everyone else, Daisy knelt down in front of Luna and smiled at her. "Mommy prepared a gift for you. Do you have a gift to trade with me?"

"Today is Auntie Vanessa's celebration party. Why are you here to bother us?" Luna wasn't listening at all, her face showing disgust far beyond her years. "Are you here to give her a gift?"

Daisy stared at her daughter, speechless for a moment.

She was flesh of her flesh. For her daughter, she'd given up her career to stay home and care for her.

Luna was a fussy baby, so Daisy held her every night. She had food allergies, so Daisy cooked every meal herself—no takeout, no restaurants.

Only this year, as Daisy gradually returned to work, Vincent had volunteered to take over childcare.

He often brought their daughter to the office, where she met Vanessa. Somehow, they'd grown closer and closer, even closer than she was with her own mother.

"Daisy, it's all my fault." Vanessa's guilty voice came from above her. "I asked Mr. Black if we could combine my celebration with your birthday party. I didn't mean to steal your spotlight. Please don't be angry."

Daisy stood up, laughing coldly inside. What fake concern.

But Vincent couldn't see it, or maybe he just didn't care how others treated her. He simply said, "It's fine, Daisy will understand."

He was being generous on her behalf again.

The tears that had nearly fallen earlier were now gone.

Only exhaustion remained in her heart.

She, the wife, the legitimate Mrs. Black, would always come last in Vincent's heart.

The anniversary she'd carefully prepared, Vincent canceled without a second thought to play golf with his buddies.

When she'd promised to bring him lunch, he went straight to dinner with clients, not even bothering to tell her, leaving her waiting in the cold wind outside his office building for two hours.

It wasn't that he meant to embarrass her, he just habitually ignored her.

But she had dignity too.

The first time she entered the Blacks' home, she'd said she was willing to terminate the pregnancy because Vincent could never love her.

But Old Mr. Black said he'd chosen her as his granddaughter-in-law, told her to marry in first and let feelings develop slowly.

He'd said, "When the child starts elementary school and becomes sensible, if Vincent still hasn't come around, I'll personally give you shares and let you go home."

That would be this year. Luna was six, and sensible enough that she and Vincent together had chosen Vanessa.

"I'm glad you don't mind, Daisy." Hearing Vincent's words, Vanessa immediately smiled, her words unconsciously revealing pride and arrogance.

"This project I closed is just too important, worth hundreds of millions of dollars. It could buy your entire lab ten times over..."

"Well, congratulations then." Daisy said flatly. "You all enjoy your celebration."

She turned to leave, but Vincent picked up a champagne glass from a nearby server's tray and held it out to her.

"You didn't prepare a gift for Nessa, so at least toast her."

His tone was completely natural, as if this was simply what Daisy should do.

Luna proudly stood in front of Vanessa and said to Daisy, "Auntie Vanessa is way better than you. She should be my mom."

Daisy couldn't help asking Vincent, "Do you think so too?"

Vincent's face darkened, his brow furrowing. "She's just a child who doesn't know better. Are you really going to argue with her?"

That sentence was the last straw that broke the camel's back, completely shattering Daisy's heart.

She took the glass and smiled. "Fine, then congratulations, Vanessa. Congratulations on winning the approval of my husband and daughter, on becoming the real Mrs. Black."

Her slender hand tilted decisively, and Daisy poured the champagne onto the floor.

The whole room gasped.

Vanessa froze. Luna burst into tears with a wail. Vincent's gaze fell on her like a knife. But Daisy turned and left without hesitation.

Six years of love treated like it didn't exist, she didn't want to continue anymore.

"Vincent." Her voice was soft as she left one last sentence. "Let's get divorced."

My head fell back, a soft sound escaping me as his fingers memorized my waist. My anger melted beneath his desperation.
"James..." I whispered, more plea than protest.
His hand caught mine, fingers threading together tightly. "I'll bring him back. I swear it. Just... don't turn away from me. Please."
The word please—low, ragged, almost broken—undid me more than anything else could have.
