Introduction

Hating the CEO is a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance that blurs the line between ambition and desire, power and vulnerability, hate and longing.
Amara Cole has spent years building her career with grit, intelligence, and an unshakable belief that people matter more than profit. Loyal to her team and fiercely protective of the work they do, she has no patience for ruthless executives who treat lives like numbers on a spreadsheet. So when her department is threatened by a corporate restructuring, Amara finds herself face-to-face with the man she despises most—Caleb Ashford, the brilliant, untouchable CEO of Ashford Dynamics.
Caleb Ashford didn’t become one of the youngest CEOs in the industry by being soft. Calculated, disciplined, and emotionally guarded, he believes success requires sacrifice. What he doesn’t expect is Amara’s defiance—her refusal to bend, her sharp tongue, or the way she challenges him in ways no one ever has. Instead of silencing her, Caleb draws her closer, binding them in a professional partnership neither of them wants but both of them can’t escape.
As weeks turn into months, their constant clashes ignite something far more dangerous than hatred. Late nights, stolen glances, and unspoken truths begin to erode the walls they’ve built around themselves. Beneath Caleb’s controlled exterior lies a man shaped by loss and responsibility, while beneath Amara’s fire burns fear of failure, of vulnerability, of loving the wrong person.
But love inside a glass tower comes with consequences. Secrets surface. Loyalties are tested. When ambition collides with emotion, both Amara and Caleb must decide what they’re willing to risk power, pride, or the one thing neither of them planned for.
Hating the CEO is a story of resistance and surrender, of two strong-willed souls locked in a battle they never intended to fight. It is a tale that

Chapter 1

I hated him before I ever met him.

I hated the way his name was spoken in reverent tones throughout the glass-and-steel corridors of Ashford Dynamics, as though he were less a man and more a god who controlled paychecks, promotions, and people’s futures with a flick of his pen. I hated the framed magazine covers lining the executive hallway Forbes, Business Weekly, Global Power all featuring the same sharp jaw, unreadable eyes, and a smile that didn’t quite reach them. Most of all, I hated that my entire career now depended on a man who had no idea I existed.

“Don’t forget,” Lila whispered as we waited by the elevator, her heels clicking nervously against the marble floor, “he fired three department heads last quarter without blinking.”

I adjusted the folder clutched to my chest and forced my shoulders back. “Good for him.”

She shot me a look. “You’re about to present to him.”

“Which means,” I muttered, “he’s about to hear why downsizing the research department is a catastrophic mistake.”

The elevator dinged softly, and the doors slid open like the mouth of a beast. Inside stood two silent executives who looked as though they hadn’t smiled since the recession. I stepped in anyway. Fear had never been a good enough reason to stay quiet.

The ride to the top floor felt longer than it should have. Each ascending number tightened the knot in my stomach. I’d spent weeks preparing this proposal late nights, cold coffee, missed sleep all to protect a team that had become my family. If Ashford Dynamics cut funding, years of work would vanish overnight.

And it would be his fault.

The doors opened onto the executive level, where the air felt cooler and the carpet softer underfoot. We were led into the boardroom, a vast space dominated by a polished table that could seat twenty. Floor-to-ceiling windows revealed the city sprawling below, glittering and distant, like a reminder of how small I really was.

He wasn’t there yet.

“Relax,” Lila murmured, though she was wringing her hands. “You’ll be fine.”

I didn’t answer. I was busy imagining the man I had built in my head cold, arrogant, detached. The kind of CEO who saw people as numbers and passion as a weakness. I had rehearsed my arguments against that man a hundred times.

The door opened.

Conversation died instantly.

Caleb Ashford walked in like he owned not just the room, but the air inside it.

He was taller than I expected, dressed in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit that looked effortless on him, as though he’d been born wearing power. Dark hair brushed his collar, slightly undone in a way that felt intentional. His presence was quiet, but commanding no theatrics, no unnecessary gestures. Just confidence sharpened into something dangerous.

His gaze swept the room, landing briefly on each face before stopping on me.

I stiffened.

There it was the look. Calculating. Focused. Too perceptive for comfort.

“Let’s begin,” he said, his voice low and even, carrying easily across the room.

As presentations started, I tried to focus on my notes, but I could feel him watching. When it was my turn, I stood, smoothed my skirt, and walked to the screen. My pulse thundered in my ears.

“This proposal addresses the long-term value of sustaining our research division,” I began. My voice didn’t shake. That alone felt like a victory. “Contrary to recent assumptions, the department is not a financial liability but a growth catalyst.”

I spoke with conviction, with evidence, with heart. Charts appeared. Projections followed. I talked about people, innovation, and responsibility words I doubted meant much to a man like him.

When I finished, silence filled the room.

Caleb leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled, eyes locked on mine. “You’re passionate,” he said.

I bristled. “I’m informed.”

A flicker of amusement crossed his face. “Passion without discipline is reckless. Convince me you have both.”

Something snapped.

“With all due respect,” I said, meeting his gaze head-on, “discipline doesn’t mean stripping teams of resources because numbers on a spreadsheet look inconvenient. It means understanding what those numbers represent.”

A collective inhale echoed around the table.

Caleb didn’t look angry. If anything, he looked intrigued.

“Interesting,” he said slowly. “What’s your name?”

“Amara Cole.”

He repeated it, testing the sound. “Ms. Cole. You don’t seem to like me very much.”

I smiled tightly. “I don’t make a habit of liking people who threaten my team’s livelihood.”

Silence again. Then, unexpectedly, he laughed.

Not mocking. Not cruel. Genuine.

“Good,” he said. “I don’t trust people who pretend.”

I sat down, heart racing, equal parts furious and unsettled. I had expected dismissal, maybe even punishment. What I hadn’t expected was the way his gaze lingered as the meeting ended, sharp and curious, as though I were a puzzle he’d just decided to solve.

As I left the boardroom, one thought echoed louder than the rest.

I still hated the CEO.

But something told me he was going to change everything.

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.

When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.

"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"

George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"

"I'm afraid that's impossible."

Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
