HOW TO FALL FOR A FAMILIAR
tammybee000 · Ongoing · 30.1k Words
Introduction
In a desperate attempt to look legit, she orders a discounted Familiar on WitchyWish — guaranteed companionship and a boost to her powers!
What arrives is not a cat.
It’s Rowan. Six-foot-two, silver-haired, scowling, and wearing what used to be her curtains because her spell shredded his clothes. He is a cat — just… conditionally. Turns out he’s a cursed shapeshifter from the prestigious Familiar Agency, and every time Virelle sneezes, hiccups, or gets flustered (which is often around him), he poofs back into a very large, very judgmental cat.
Now they’re magically bonded for 30 days. If they can’t prove their partnership works, Virelle loses her magic forever and Rowan stays trapped as a cat permanently.
The only problem? Virelle is starting to like both versions of him a little too much. Especially the one who sleeps on her pillow and brings her dead enchanted socks as gifts.
Chapter 1
The Hearth Hall smelled like cinnamon and failure.
Which was unfortunate, because Virelle had spent three hours trying not to smell like either.
She had scrubbed her hands raw. She had braided her dark hair twice. She had even borrowed a proper witch coat from her neighbor, Mrs. Albie, which was two sizes too big and smelled faintly of cat mint. None of it helped.
The coat sleeves kept sliding over her hands, and every time she pushed them up, a puff of that cat mint and old lavender sachet smell would hit her nose. Mrs. Albie had said, "It brings good luck, dear," when she lent it. But luck, like hearth-magic, never seemed to stick to Virelle for long.
Because the hall was warm, and crowded, and every other witch’s hearth was roaring.
The great stone hearths along the walls were alive, crackling with different colors. Gold for the bakery witches, green for the garden witches, soft pink for the love-spell witches. The heat made the whole hall feel like a hug. A hug Virelle was not included in.
“Next. Virelle Bramble. Cottage 7B.”
Head Witch Ilara didn’t even look up from her clipboard. Her glasses were fogged from all the magic in the air.
Virelle felt her stomach drop. That was the voice Ilara used for the hopeless cases. The third-timers.
Virelle tripped on the rug on her way to the center circle. Great. She caught herself on the edge of the circle and her borrowed coat flapped.
The circle was drawn in salt and dried rosemary. In the middle was a simple, unlit hearthstone — the final test. All you had to do was make it light. Make it feel like home. If your magic was real, the stone would catch, the little cottage illusion would appear above it, smoke would puff from the chimney. Easy.
For everyone else.
For Liana, who had gone before her, it had been spectacular. Liana’s hearth had burst into a three-story illusion with a wraparound porch and actual birds. Liana now had three familiars and a bakery sponsorship.
Liana had even gotten a little wooden plaque that said EXCEPTIONAL HEARTH that she was now holding like a baby. She caught Virelle’s eye and mouthed, Good luck. She didn’t mean it.
Virelle put her hands out. Her palms were sweating.
Inside her oversized sleeves, her fingers were shaking so hard she had to curl them to hide it.
Come on, she thought to her magic. Just once. Don’t be shy.
Hearth-magic wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t supposed to shoot lightning. It was supposed to feel like soup on a rainy day. Like a blanket fresh from the line. It came from belonging. And Virelle had been trying to belong to her little crooked cottage on the edge of Bramble Hollow for two years.
Two years of fixing leaks, of talking to the walls, of sleeping with the windows open so the plum tree could say goodnight. Two years of trying to be enough for a house that had once loved her grandmother more than anything.
The stone stayed cold.
It was so cold it made her fingertips ache. The salt circle around it seemed to draw the cold in.
She closed her eyes and thought about her cottage. About the leaky window she’d stuffed with old spellbooks. About the chipped yellow mug she drank from every morning. About the way the floorboards creaked hello when she walked in.
“Whenever you’re ready, dear,” Head Witch Ilara said, not unkindly.
That gentle tone was worse than shouting. Virelle pushed harder. A little spark jumped in her chest. For a second, the hearthstone flickered — a tiny, warm orange glow.
It was working. The salt trembled. A tiny curl of smoke rose.
Yes!
Then it went pfft.
Like a candle someone had blown too hard on. A puff of grey, embarrassed smoke came out of the stone and spelled, very clearly in the air: "meh.”
The smoke hung there for three full seconds. Meh. In perfect, loopy handwriting. Her own magic had roasted her.
The hall went silent.
Then someone in the back coughed. The silence stretched so long Virelle could hear the big hall clock ticking.
Then Liana, from the second row, snorted. “Oh, wow. It’s got her personality.”
A few people laughed. Short, sharp laughs that people do when they’re uncomfortable. Virelle’s face went hotter than any hearth.
Her eyes burned. She would not cry in the circle. The salt would get wet.
Head Witch Ilara finally looked up. Her expression was that soft, pitying one Virelle hated most. “Oh, Virelle. Again?”
That again had two years of history in it. Again you’re here. Again you failed. Again your grandmother’s cottage is wasted.
“I— I can explain, it’s been cold in my cottage, the —”
“Dear, hearth-magic requires a hearth. A sense of home. Perhaps your cottage simply does not recognize you as its witch.”
The words hit harder than any failed spell. Does not recognize you.
It meant she was a stranger in her own home. It meant the cottage she loved more than anything was just tolerating her.
Ilara made a note on her clipboard. The scratch of her pen was loud. “Final Certification: FAILED. Magic Level: Negligible. Recommendation: Relinquish Cottage 7B within thirty days for reassignment to a more suitable witch. You may apply for non-magical residency in town.”
The word negligible was underlined twice.
Non-magical residency. Like a tourist. Like someone who didn’t belong.
Virelle stood there, hands still outstretched over the cold stone, while the next girl stepped up and lit her hearth so bright Virelle had to blink.
This was the third time she's failing again.
The next girl’s illusion was already filling the hall with the smell of fresh bread. Virelle had to step back. She nearly tripped on the rug again.
She walked back to her seat with the empty stone in her hands. It was heavier now.
Outside, Bramble Hollow was doing what it always did — being beautiful without her. The cobblestone lanes were full of witches carrying warm bread, familiars chasing each other, lights flickering in windows that loved their witches back.
Her own lane was quieter. The plum trees were almost bare. Her cottage was at the very end, where the lane turned to dirt.
Cottage 7B was at the very end of the lane, leaning a little to the left like it was tired. The paint was peeling. One shutter was hanging off. But it had the best plum tree in the yard.
She pushed the door. It didn’t creak hello this time.

It turns out, the fae stole my little brother. In his place? A pixie with boundary issues and a talent for home repairs.
I’ve spent my life taking care of everyone else. So when my baby brother is taken, I don’t hesitate. I walk straight into a faerie mansion and make a bargain with its infuriatingly charming master.
Kie is everything you’d expect from a dangerous fae, beautiful, political, and entirely too amused by me. Power wrapped in a smirk. Sensual, mischievous, and far too aware of the effect he has on people. He agrees to help me find my brother.
For a price.
Now I’m bound by a faerie bargain and navigating a world of glamour, manipulation, and ancient rules I definitely should have learned sooner, enchanted forests, political games, magical contracts, and a fae lord who treats seduction like a perfectly reasonable negotiation tactic.
Iron is how I keep people out.
Glamour is how he draws them in.
And apparently, they just don’t mix.

My Perverse: You're mine, you son of a bitch
Vincenzo Valentini is a man who sees the world as a business counter and human beings as merchandise.
The owner of an empire built upon corpses and submission, he is the reflection of pure perversity.
When fate places Andrew Thompson, the son of his greatest rival, into his hands, the plan was simple: use him, break him, and discard him like a toy that has lost its appeal.
What Vincenzo did not expect was that, beneath the youthful skin and the appearance of innocence, Andrew hid the same abyss as he did.
Vincenzo never wanted redemption. He never wanted someone to save him from his own darkness. He was seeking a mirror. And in Andrew, he found the partner who, upon seeing his blood-stained hands, does not recoil in terror, but trembles with desire.
In this perverse game, the "little toy" proves to be the perfect executioner. The mafia leader found someone who not only accepts his cruel side but cultivates it, feeding the monster Vincenzo has always been.
Where there should have been fear, lust emerged. Where there should have been hatred, a perverse loyalty was born. Andrew Thompson is the dark reflection of Vincenzo, the soldier the underworld did not see coming, and the man who proved that, for some, paradise only makes sense if it is in the middle of chaos.
Vincenzo opened the doors to his empire, but Andrew was the only one capable of invading his heart.
They are not heroes. They are hell on earth.
Bound by Vengeance
Then there is Xavier Romano. Cold and calculating, he revels in his dominance, finding satisfaction in the terror he instills and the power he wields. But his iron control shatters when he crosses paths with Eloisa. Her unpredictability, her unapologetic desire for vengeance, and her allure are irresistible—and dangerous. As they collide in a world where betrayal is constant and alliances are fragile, passion ignites between them, each step drawing them deeper into a forbidden obsession that neither can control. In a life defined by violence and survival, will their dangerous game be their undoing, or will it make them unstoppable?
