I Was Reborn To Reclaim My Daughter’s Stolen Future

Introduction
Chapter 1
On the day I relived the moment I authorized a fifteen-thousand-dollar transfer to Mark, the very first thing I did was completely freeze our joint account.
In my previous life, I had worked myself to the bone traveling out of state for pharmaceutical sales, wiring money into this account every single month. The mortgage, car insurance, Lily's private school tuition—and especially her 529 college fund and FSA medical account—were maxed out year after year. But I didn't realize until I was lying in the ICU that Lily had been trudging through heavy snow in a pilled, worn-out jacket, unable to afford even a sixty-dollar inhaler when her asthma flared up.
She hated me. Her final voice message to me echoed in my head: "You say you love me, but why does my medical card always get declined at the school pharmacy?"
I didn't understand until my dying breath that it wasn't because I hadn't provided. It was because Mark took our daughter's lifeline to support someone else.
This time around, I severed the automatic deductions, reported the joint cards as stolen, and transferred every last cent into an irrevocable trust overseen by my lawyer.
That night, Mark called, his tone laced with irritation.
"Are you crazy? Why is the joint account locked? The mortgage and Lily's tuition haven't gone through—do you want the bank to take our house?"
I stared at the direct-payment receipt from the school popping up on my laptop screen and tapped my knuckles against the desk.
"Why panic? The money is already in her hands."
The other end of the line went dead silent for a couple of seconds. Mark probably hadn't processed it yet.
For fifteen years of marriage, he had always managed our joint account. He claimed that since I spent three hundred days a year on airplanes, the lawn maintenance, HOA fines, and our child's expenses couldn't wait for me to clear checks across three time zones. It made sense to me then. He said Lily needed to enroll in an AP prep camp, so I made the transfer. He said the 529 and FSA needed to be maxed out so we wouldn't be caught empty-handed when our kid got sick, so I doubled the amount.
In my past life, as I lay in the ICU with a ventilator down my throat, I truly believed that the only thing I owed my family was my presence. When a nurse dialed Lily's number for me, Mark intercepted the call and hung up.
"She’s taking her finals. Don't bother her with this."
But I found out after my death that Lily had no exams that day. She was curled up on the sofa at Chloe's house, staring at a text message glaring on her phone.
It was a text from Chloe: "Your mom went on vacation to Hawaii with her new boyfriend. She won't even give you the time of day for a call back, canceled your cards, and doesn't care about you at all. Don't go to the hospital to watch her act; she doesn't love you."
Lily had smashed her phone against the wall, shrinking into a tight ball as she sobbed and screamed.
"She never wanted me in the first place!"
That was the exact moment I realized that cardiac arrest wasn't the most terrifying thing. The most terrifying thing was that the person I fiercely protected with my life was told, word by word, "Your mother thinks you're a burden"—and she believed every single syllable.
…
On the day of my rebirth, I sat in a hotel room in Seattle. Outside the window, a blizzard raged.
My phone screen stayed lit on a calendar reminder: "Today: Transfer $15,000 to joint account ending in 1027—Mortgage, Lily's asthma follow-up, and AP exam fees."
This was the exact sum from my previous life. Mark had told me over the phone that he had bought the best inhaler on the market and secured her Ivy League campus tour spots. In reality, her AP registrations were canceled due to late fees, and Lily was mocked outside the college counselor's office, left to cry alone in a bathroom stall. Meanwhile, my money had been spent elsewhere by him.
I canceled the scheduled transfer and dialed my bank's account manager.
"Check the sub-accounts under the one ending in 1027. The 529 and FSA under Lily's name."
The manager's voice came through the speakerphone.
"Ma'am, this is a shared account with your husband. Currently, the balances on these two sub-categories are unusually low. Are you certain you want to unilaterally freeze them?"
"I'm certain. Revoke my joint authorization and liquidate the balances."
Identity verification, SSN, facial recognition. After running through the entire protocol, the manager paused.
"The total available balance for the 529 and FSA is twelve dollars and fifty cents."
I stared at that number without speaking. Over five years, I had deposited more than three hundred thousand dollars, yet only twelve dollars and fifty cents remained.
I thought I was using cash to hold an umbrella over my daughter's head. It turned out the umbrella had changed hands a long time ago.
"Freeze all joint cards and invalidate the old ones."
I hung up and immediately dialed Sarah's number.
"I need to set up an irrevocable educational trust account for Lily."
The rustling sound of Sarah flipping through case files stopped.
"How soon? What are the restrictions?"
"Effective today." I looked out at the blinding glare of the snow. "It can only be used for tuition, medical bills, and eyewear, strictly against official prescriptions and invoices. No undocumented cash withdrawals, and it absolutely cannot pass through her father's hands."
Sarah remained silent for a split second.
"Did something happen?"
"Yes." I grabbed the stapler and hurled it into the trash can. "Someone used my daughter's life to raise someone else's bastard."

Love's Deadly Equation
I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.
