Chapter 1

“Did you actually think that there is a world where anybody would ever choose you over somebody like me?” Rebecca sneered. She glared down at me repulsed by the blood connection that we have. I’m her twin sister but everything about me revolted her, and my entire family.

I didn’t even think twice about speaking. Speaking would make me end up hurting twice as much as I currently did. No form of a win would be worth the blood curdling screams that she would force out of me later when she could convince our parents that I did some horrendous thing to her while somehow being locked in the cage. She chuckled, flipping her perfect blonde hair over her shoulder, “Don’t worry mom and dad will see it as I want just like always. I’ll have you begging for mercy later.” She smirked, looking down at me in disgust through the rusted iron cage.

There was nothing safe about what would be happening later, “What did you do?” One of the other prisoners asked, looking at me like she was the monster. I let out a dry laugh, “I was born to a family that only has blondes.” I whispered, at least if I was going to almost die later than someone would get to know the truth. The prisoner looked at me and extended his hand through the door, “Kieran.” He whispered, his voice left goosebumps over my arms and I shivered. It was already in the cold months of the year based off of the way that my warm breath froze in the air.

“What are you in for?” I asked, trying to make boring conversation. There was always more people in here everyday and most of the time I wouldn’t bother even learning a face in here because they always die. My pack isn’t known for their nice and forgiving nature. Well, maybe they had been once upon a time when my parents were still alive. Now they are rotting in the cell next to me, all of them but my sister.

“What’s that smell?” one of the younger captives asked, throwing up in the bucket in each of our stalls.

“My family or the feces that they let build up in here so everybody gets sick and weak.” I shrugged, sniffling while I looked at the remaining parts of my parents bodies that hadn’t decomposed. I used to talk to them and tell them that i would give them a real burial, somewhere warm and safe from werewolves and anyone that could disrupt their graves. I would think about the way my little brother was too innocent to stand a chance against my sister’s boyfriend and manic friends.

“What do you mean?” the sturdy voice next to me asked, hsi voice grounded me from the memories that haunted every night. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath in, “The pack above promised my sister Luna-ship and she brought them here. They slaughtered my parents and put me in here when I was fourteen? I think?” I questioned myself trying to think back to how old I was when everything happened. There wasn’t anything I could do to help my family because I wasn’t of age to get my wolf yet. I took in another set of deep breaths, “Wow, so that’s why they are keeping you alive. You are the only other true female to the pack.” One of the other prisoner’s said, making me go into another anxiety filled state. I got onto all fours and took in deep breaths and let them out slowly, “Come on, Poppy. Just breathe.” I whispered to myself, praying that I could fight with myself out of this anxiety attack.

I looked around the room until I found an old rusted nail, “Fuck me.” i whispered, stabbing the nail into the palm of my hand and basking in the pain. Pain helps me focus on the now, the way the feeling of it rushes through your body and takes over every other sense in your body. I leaned against the back wall of my cage before I threw the bloody and rusted nail back into the corner of my cell.

“Well, what do we have here, Poppy?” My sister smirked, seeing my hand shake while I tried to cover the blood with my black shirt. It was torn and ripped from the years of being in here.

“Leave her alone.” his low and husky voice filled the room. The hairs on my arms raised while he spoke against my sister. Was he trying to die faster?I shook my head in defeat, “What do you want Dahlia?” I sighed, already eager to give into her demands.

“Oh, giving up so soon big sister?” She smirked, while the guards walked closer to my cell. I looked at the three of them, it is never good when she decides that she wants to move me somewhere else. I shook my head, “No, I don’t want to fight today.” I looked down at the floor, she took eye contact as a direct threat these days. She chuckled, “Well I think today you should give up your virginity.” She glared at me. I thought she couldn’t take anything more from me but I was so wrong. It’s the only thing I thought she couldn’t take from me.

I crawled tot he back of the cage and to the corner farthest away from the entrance, “No! No, please don’t do this to me!” I screamed, trying to make myself as small as I possibly could with my knee’s to my chest.

“You know it’s comical. You used pain as a way to make yourself calm but now you are bleeding with some of the most blood thirsty vampires in the area.” She smiled, looking at each of the men in cage’s next to me. The guard unlocked the cell and the three of them came in with chains, “Come out nicely and we won’t hurt you.” one of the guards said clenching his jaw. He clearly wanted ot hurt me as much as he could, “Fuck you!” I screamed, grabbing my only small knife and lunging at him. I kicked the other guard in the stomach and watched him fall to the ground, “Guards! Chain her!” My sister screamed, irritated that she wasn’t getting to destroy the only part of me worth diminishing.

The guard I forgot about came up behind me and forced my hands behind my back, “I have her!” he said contempt that they tamed the ‘wild’ prisoner. I’m so sorry that I want to fight against having one of the vampire’s steal my virginity in a rabid way. The second guard chained my wrist together behind my back, “Who do you think we should put her in the cage with?” The guard smirked, pinching my nipple.

She let out a deep sigh, “Who has been in here the longest?” She asked, eyeing up each of the prisoners. The bright lights in the room made each and every one of the prisoner’s look just as rabid as the rest except for the man next to me. He was three times the size of any other man in the cage’s. Is that really the same person that tried to make me feel better just minutes ago?

“Put her in the cell with Cain.” She smirked, looking at the man in the cell next to me.

“No! Dahlia please! I’m your sister!” I screamed fighting against the main pushing me towards his cell. The blood in my wrist running down my and leaving little drops on the floor, “Oh sister. When are you going to learn!” She smiled, comically before pulling out a knife.

“What do-AH!” I screamed, feeling the slice open my skin by my collarbone. The blood dripping down my clothes and leaving me a blood covered mess, “Why would you do that!” I screamed, feeling the liquid everywhere.

“To help him find use in your body obviously. Nobody would ever want someone so… ugly? Is that the right word? No… Bland.” She chuckled, before whispering something to another guard.

“Wait.” the guard said pushing me back into my cell and throwing some cheap white dress into my cell, “Change. Now.” he ordered, ripping the chains from my hands.

“No, no, no,” she said, pointing at a platter. “If it’s called ‘Goth Girl French Toast,’ then it has to be black. I don’t care how you do it. Activated charcoal. Blackberries. Food coloring. Demon blood. Whatever.”

The head chef looked like he was silently praying for death.

I rushed forward. “Amara. Stop traumatizing these poor people.”

She spun around, delighted. “Sera! Good, you’re here. Taste this. It’s missing despair.”

The chef’s face morphed into existential crisis.

Instead, my fingers curled into his shirt, clutching the fabric as though it was my only anchor. Something in him snapped—something he had been holding back for too long. His mouth found mine in a kiss that wasn't tender, but hungry, desperate.
I gasped into him, his hand sliding up to cup my jaw, holding me as if afraid I might vanish.
"You drive me insane," he breathed against my mouth, his lips trailing to my throat. "I can't lose you, Ella. Not you."
My head fell back, a soft sound escaping me as his fingers memorized my waist. My anger melted beneath his desperation.
"James..." I whispered, more plea than protest.
His hand caught mine, fingers threading together tightly. "I'll bring him back. I swear it. Just... don't turn away from me. Please."
The word please—low, ragged, almost broken—undid me more than anything else could have.

I was born the year the Rift opened. They said I would close it. They were wrong about so many things.

My name is Mia, and everything I touch is dying.

The flowers beneath my mother's window turned black overnight. The herbs I gathered at dawn rotted in my hands. When the court wizard finally told me the truth—that someone cursed me, that my presence would kill everyone I love—I realized the prophecy everyone believed was never meant to save the kingdom. It was meant to destroy me.

So I ran. Not to fulfill some destiny, but to survive it.

Now I'm traveling with a hunter who lost his companions to the same curse I carry, chasing fragments of a prophecy the Fae sing differently. An elf took a baby from the palace the night I was born. And somewhere between the lies I've been told and the truth I'm hunting, I'm starting to suspect: What if I'm not the princess from the prophecy at all?
