Introduction
The group home. The adoptive home that had everything but love. They all taught me the same lesson: no one ever really chooses me. So I stopped expecting it—from family. From love.
And yet I became a dog behaviorist, teaching damaged dogs to trust humans. I just can't do it myself.
The Blakes' debt crisis pushed me into a marriage with Finnegan Sterling. A transaction. Nothing more. But somewhere between his wounds and mine, we started to get close.
Then a stranger walks into my training center with a dog, his eyes searching for someone the fire took.
Some families never really disappear.
And that fire—did it really take everything?
Chapter 1
Ophelia POV
The nightmare always began the same way.
Fire came first, creeping along the floorboards like it was hunting for something to burn.
Then the sirens rolled in—distant at first, then everywhere, mixing with smoke and a strange, sweet smell I could never place.
And then the hands. A pair of them, reaching through the haze toward me, fingers spread, warm even in the dream — and then gone. Every time, gone.
I’d had this exact nightmare for twenty years, and my mind still wouldn’t show me the face belonging to those outstretched hands.
I woke sharp at 7:02 a.m., sitting up before I was fully awake, my heart beating fast, one hand already reaching for my nightstand.
I made myself look at concrete things. The curtains, their seam letting in a gray-blue line of early light. My phone screen, the time, the date.
The smell of the water reached me even through the closed window — salt, old wood, the particular cold of Bluehaven in autumn. Close enough to notice, but never close enough to feel like home.
My bedroom was neat and practical, nothing in it that wasn't useful. Blake family logic had always been simple: enough was enough.
The nightstand held my work binder, a half-empty glass of water, and a small pendant on a frayed cord — silver-plated, crescent-shaped, its edge worn thin from years of me touching it.
I didn't know who had given it to me. It was the only thing I’d kept from Haven House, and I’d never been able to get rid of it.
I ran my thumb along the crescent's edge, feeling the familiar roughness, and then I got up and went to work.
Bluehaven Harbor Animal Center smelled like antiseptic and kibble.
My coworker Dara stopped me by the coat hooks before I’d even taken off my jacket.
"Morning, Ophelia," she said. "New intake last night. Third return in eight months — last family's notes say unpredictable, aggressive risk."
I took the folder. "Morning Dara. Anything wicked about last night?"
"The drain in kennel four backed up again midnight."
I gave a slight sigh and opened the folder.
The intake photo showed a large mixed-breed dog, black and gray, heavy through the shoulders, with the kind of coat that would have been beautiful if he'd ever let anyone near enough to brush it. His eyes were angled away from the camera.
In the name field, someone had written: Rook.
"Director said if he doesn't show measurable progress in six weeks, they'll have to discuss options." We both understood what "discuss options" meant in practice.
"Then we have six weeks," I said.
She hesitated. "He bit the last trainer, Ophelia. Broke skin."
I tucked the folder under my arm. "I know."
"I'm just saying." She fell into step beside me as I started down the corridor. "You could take the retriever in kennel two. She's very normal. She likes everyone. She already knows sit."
"She also already has four adoption inquiries."
"My point exactly. Low drama, good outcome, everyone goes home happy."
"Rook doesn't have four adoption inquiries."
Dara sighed, the particular sigh of someone who had made this argument before and already knew how it ended. "No," she said. "He really doesn't."
Rook was in the far corner of his kennel, spine curved high, body folded into the smallest possible shape for a dog his size.
He stayed perfectly still, the way scared animals do—convinced the next person through that door would hurt him.
I didn't go in. I sat down on the floor outside the kennel gate, back against the bars, angled slightly away from him, and opened my work binder across my knees. I wrote the date, the time, the baseline observations. The quality of light in the kennel. The position of his ears. The rhythm of his breathing.
'He's not aggressive,' I thought, watching him out of the corner of my eye. 'He's afraid.'
Eighteen minutes passed. Then Rook lifted his head and looked directly at me.
One second. Maybe less. Then he looked away.
I wrote: [Initial session. Subject made voluntary eye contact at T+18min. No approach attempted, no pressure applied. Starting point noted.]
I remained another forty minutes, until he stopped listening to the sound of my pen moving across the page, until his spine dropped two inches and his ears went from flat to simply resting.
The rest of the shift passed in paperwork and routine rounds. Then I packed up my binder and drove home through the early dark.
The route back ran along Harbor Road, left past the old cannery, right at the stone wall.
Every spring, a patch of yellow wildflowers grew right there, no one planting them, no one taking care of them. I noticed them every time I passed. I'd never once stopped to figure out why.
I turned into the Blakes' driveway and saw that every light in the house was on, including the dining room chandelier.
The atmosphere hit me the moment I walked in.
Diana Blake — my foster mother — was talking too much and too quickly, moving from the weather to the new restaurant on Harbor Street to something she'd read about property values. She’d already poured a second glass of wine before the salad course even began.
Charles Blake, her husband, was very quiet. He ate with the unhurried precision of a man waiting for the right moment.
Mason, their son, was at his usual chair, scrolling his phone.
We got through the salad course on safe topics. When the main plates arrived, Charles put down his knife and fork with a precise, unhurried movement.
"Ophelia, we've been in some difficulty with a debt restructuring," he said, looking at me. "The Sterling portfolio."
He might have been describing a weather pattern, or a traffic delay. "And the Sterling family has expressed interest in a partnership arrangement. Through marriage."
Diana smoothed her napkin. "Their son, Finnegan Sterling — well-regarded, very established. It would be a good situation for you, Ophelia."
She let a beat pass and added, softer, with the particular warmth she produced when she needed something, "A good situation for everyone. We've always taken care of you, Ophelia. We only ask that you consider—"
"And if I say no?"
After a moment, Mason looked up from his phone with a mild, faintly puzzled mock. "It's not like you have better options," he said, and went back to scrolling.
I remained silent, cut my food into small pieces and ate everything on my plate.
Mason was right. As if I have ever had a choice since I joined this family.
At eleven-thirty, I was sitting on the window seat in my room with my phone to my ear, watching the harbor lights move slowly and far away in the dark.
My best friend, Celeste Rowan, picked up on the second ring, the way she always did.
I told her the whole thing straight through, no editorializing. When I finished, she was quiet for a few seconds.
"Finnegan Sterling," she said, like she was turning the name over. "I've heard of him. Finance circles, old money. People say he runs cold — not rude, just. Nobody really knows what he's thinking." A pause. "That's either very manageable or very not, depending."
"Depending on what?"
"On whether you're the kind of person who needs to know what someone's thinking."
I didn't answer that.
"Is it what you want," she asked, "or is it the least bad option?"
I saw the water beyond the glass was deep blue, almost black, the boat lights drifting so slowly they seemed to be standing still.
"Honestly?" I said. "I don't know the difference anymore."
Celeste didn't tell me to think carefully. She didn't tell me I deserved better. She said, "Okay," and then, after a moment, "Whatever, I just want you to be free and happy."
After we hung up, I set the phone down and held the pendant in my palm, feeling the worn crescent press into my thumb. The window shuddered faintly against a gust off the water.
I didn't know anything about Finnegan Sterling. I didn't know what was waiting on the other side of this. But at least this time, the terms were laid out clearly from the start — a marriage arrangement, financial reasons, no pretense about love or family.
That was more than the Blakes had ever offered me. Seventeen years under this roof, and I still didn't know exactly what I owed them.
But I finally knew exactly how they planned to make me pay back what I owed.
