Introduction

When a mysterious billionaire, Julian Cross, approaches widow Iris Hartwell with a proposition—he knows who killed her husband, and his price is her hand in marriage, she sees a path to justice she never had. She agrees, fully intending to manipulate him into confession while uncovering the truth herself.
But in the sprawling Manhattan penthouse they now share, every clue she unearths points to Julian as the culprit. Security feeds, financial records, testimony from her late husband's associate, the evidence builds a suffocating wall between them. As Iris descends into paranoia, certain he orchestrated her husband's death, Julian grows distant and watchful.
Then her husband calls.
He's alive. Alive and hiding in a safe house outside the city, orchestrated disappearance under way. And Julian wasn't trying to expose the murderer, he was running his own investigation into whether Iris herself had ordered the hit. As both cover stories collapse, Iris and Julian face the wreckage of their deception: two people who married for leverage, both hunting the same ghost, neither able to trust what they've been told.
The real killer still walks free. And they may have just married them.

Chapter 1

POV: Iris Hartwell

The Harrington Gala happened every November without exception. The venue changed—this year it was the American Museum of Natural History, the grand rotunda swallowing Manhattan's wealthiest like it was designed for nothing else—but the guest list remained consistent. Same families. Same money. Same conversations recycled annually.

Iris Hartwell adjusted her mask in the bathroom mirror one final time before emerging into the crowd.

The dress was navy silk, expensive without screaming it. She'd chosen it deliberately—noticeable enough to satisfy obligation, restrained enough to avoid the aggressive sympathy that still followed her through rooms. Sixteen months of this calculation. Sixteen months of understanding that widows weren't tragic so much as complicated. They required gentleness, but not too much. Acknowledgment, but not prolonged attention.

She knew her role. She'd been playing it since the morning they found Daniel in that parking garage.

The rotunda was already dense with bodies by eight o'clock. Waiters circulated with champagne flutes Iris didn't touch. She'd learned that alcohol loosened something in her careful composure, and composure was what kept people at a manageable distance. Cordial but contained. Sad but functional.

"Iris."

Margaret Ashford pulled her into an embrace that lasted just long enough to seem genuine. "I keep meaning to call. How are you holding up?"

The question everyone asked. The answer Iris had perfected: "I'm managing. The foundation keeps me busy."

It was true enough. Daniel's philanthropic legacy had become her occupation—running the Hartwell Foundation, selecting grants, attending board meetings, maintaining the public version of his memory. It was also the most efficient way to respond without inviting follow-up questions.

Margaret launched into a story about someone's daughter, someone's recent trip to Aspen. Iris made the appropriate sounds and looked appropriately engaged. Her eyes tracked the crowd anyway, cataloging exits and quiet corners, the geography of escape.

Somewhere around nine, a man she didn't recognize appeared at the edges of her vision.

Not obviously staring. Just... present. Dark suit that fit well enough to suggest intention rather than standard tailoring. Early forties, maybe, though he had the kind of face that didn't advertise its age. He was watching the crowd the way Iris watched crowds, not with interest in socializing, but with the calculating attention of someone taking inventory.

She returned focus to Margaret's recounting of some charity luncheon.

"Iris Hartwell?"

The man had moved closer. His voice was moderate in volume, steady in pitch. The kind of voice that didn't demand attention but received it anyway.

Margaret excused herself with visible relief, already scanning the crowd for her next conversation. Iris turned to face him fully.

"I'm sorry, have we met?"

"No." He extended his hand. "Julian Cross. I was hoping to catch you before the evening got away from me."

His handshake was brief and professional. His eyes were gray—a particular shade of gray that seemed to hold information rather than reflect light. She had the immediate instinct that this was a man who made his living understanding people.

"It's a large event," she said. Neutral greeting. The kind of response that didn't encourage or discourage further conversation.

"It is." He didn't move away. "I've been looking forward to it specifically because I wanted to meet you."

The statement was direct enough to be unusual but phrased without presumption. Iris found herself curious despite her determination not to be.

"How so?"

"Your foundation's work with urban education reform. It's more thoughtful than most philanthropic ventures in this space." He gestured toward the side of the rotunda, away from the main press of bodies. "Walk with me?"

Under normal circumstances, she would have politely declined and excused herself. Tonight, something in the efficiency of his directness made refusal feel like the more complicated option. She followed him to a quieter section of the rotunda, where the pressure of being observed eased slightly.

"I'll be honest," Julian said, "my interest isn't purely academic. I have property holdings in several neighborhoods your foundation has targeted for grant work. I wanted to understand your selection criteria."

Business inquiry. That made sense. That was safe. Iris relaxed incrementally.

"The selections are based on feasibility analysis, community buy-in, and measurable outcomes." The words were her standard delivery, but she noticed she varied her usual phrasing. "Daniel built the foundation with the assumption that money alone doesn't solve structural problems. The infrastructure has to be in place first."

"Daniel was thorough about his research." Julian's head tilted slightly. "I imagine that translated to the foundation."

"It did, yes."

"And you've maintained that rigor since taking over?"

She had. The foundation had been the one thing she'd insisted on managing completely. Not as a tribute to Daniel, but because managing something required presence, and presence was easier than absence. It kept the grief functionally productive.

"I've tried." Iris paused. "Most of the existing board resisted change at first. They wanted the foundation to remain exactly as Daniel designed it. I had to prove I wasn't dismantling his vision, just... continuing it in practical terms."

"That's not an easy position to hold." He was looking at her directly now, not analytically but not quite intimately either. Somewhere between those registers. "Taking over something that significant after losing someone significant."

She stilled.

Julian continued without seeming to notice her change in demeanor. "Most people would have sold it off or installed a figurehead. But you chose to actually do the work."

"How did you—" Iris caught herself. Her question hung incomplete.

"Your track record speaks for itself." He smiled, and it was brief, almost apologetic. "I do research before attending these events. It saves time."

That explained his knowledge of the foundation. It didn't explain how he'd known her well enough to seek her out without having met her, or known which conversations would resonate. It definitely didn't explain the way he was speaking to her like he'd already read her biography.

"I'd like to continue this conversation somewhere less public," Julian said. "With less ambient noise. Would you be available for a meeting? Coffee, lunch, whatever suits your schedule."

The proposition was phrased as genuine request rather than assumption. Iris recognized the technique—it created the illusion of autonomy while still being a request she could easily refuse.

"I could check my calendar," she said. Noncommittal. "You can have your office send details to my assistant."

"Julian Cross." He produced a card—actual cardstock, deliberately old-fashioned. "This is my direct number. I prefer to avoid the administrative intermediary if possible."

She took the card. Heavy weight. Black lettering. No title, no company name. Just a number.

"I'll be in touch," she said, meaning it as dismissal.

He nodded and excused himself, drifting back into the crowd with the same understated confidence he'd arrived with. Iris watched him reintegrate into the gala's ecosystem, noting that he didn't immediately seek out other conversations. He'd simply appeared, said what he'd come to say, and left.

Efficient. Intentional. Not interested in the performance aspect of the event.

She looked down at the card in her hand. The number was handwritten—his personal note that institutional trappings weren't necessary for their interaction.

Margot would probably call this flirtation. One of those rare moments when an available man approached an available woman at a social event with genuine interest. Iris had experienced enough of these encounters in the past sixteen months to recognize the pattern—the carefully calibrated approach, the intelligent observation, the strategic vulnerability.

But flirtation usually came from men who knew they were being obvious. This had felt like something else. Like a man who'd done research and decided the return on investment was worth the approach.

Iris returned to her position near the rotunda's perimeter and accepted a fresh champagne flute from a passing waiter. She didn't drink it. She just held it, the cold glass grounding her, as conversations eddied around her.

When had she mentioned Daniel being dead?

She replayed their exchange mentally, tracking each line of dialogue. She'd said "taking over since taking over." She'd implied he was no longer available to make decisions. But she hadn't said dead. She'd never used the word.

Julian had said "after losing someone significant."

Not after your husband's death.

Just the phrase that would mean something only if he already knew what she'd lost.

Iris set the champagne down on a nearby table and, without seeking goodbyes or explanations, left the Harrington Gala.

In the car, she pulled up Julian Cross's contact information. No company listing. No social media presence that emerged from an initial search. No professional biography accessible through standard channels. Just a number and a man who'd approached a widow at a gala because he'd decided, through some form of research she couldn't identify, that she was worth twenty minutes of his time.

The card remained on her lap as the car wound through Manhattan's November streets, each turn taking her further from the gala and closer to the questions she couldn't yet name.

They were already married for three years when Alpha Damian Zeus’s long-lost first love, Lily, returned bringing along a five-year-old pup.

Luna Ariana Volkstane slid the formal rejection request across the table. "Let's end this bond. It's better for you, me, and your first love."

He just smirked. "You want me to reject you? You think you can break our bond that easily?"

So she did. Ariana cut ties with him completely, poured herself into her career, and rose to global fame as a legendary healer, her knowledge of rare herbs, wolf anatomy, and ancient magic sought after across continents.

The powerful suitors lined up. The Alpha of an overseas empire whispered, "Ariana, hurry up and perform the severing ritual. I can't wait to claim you." A powerful pack leader vowed, "I'll be there with you the day you break the bond." A legendary wolf attorney promised, "I'll handle your rejection case with the pack council myself."

Ariana just rubbed her temples. It's not that she didn't want the split, she wanted it more than anything, it's just that the Alpha she was mated to refused to let go.

Finally, she announced, "Whoever can officially get me rejected, I'll put you at the head table of my bond-breaking celebration."

Not long after, Alpha Damian was served the official rejection request right in the middle of an emergency pack council meeting. That same afternoon, he was attacked by rogues at the gates of his own territory.

When Ariana showed up at the pack infirmary with healing herbs, she repeated calmly, "Let's sever the mate bond. It's better for you, me, and everyone else."

But the cold, untouchable Alpha pulled her into his arms, his eyes blood-red with fury. "You want me to reject you? Over my dead body."
