Chapter 1
Melissa's POV
I had seen many movies where people get miraculous scholarships into their dream schools, but I never knew that it was going to be an experience for me as well.
Orlando High School had sent me a letter of acceptance into their scholarship program, and it felt like a dream until today as I walked into the management office to officially sign in as a student and resume classes.
The school looked more luxurious than it was on paper, and the students—I couldn't stop staring at each of them. They were obviously from rich homes because of the way they carried themselves, the way they kept walking in pairs, each one holding the latest smartphones and luxury jewelry, and that purse... From the papers it was a newly released edition from the biggest fashion industry in the city.
At that point I stood there in the hallway watching all of them walk past me as I tried to find my classroom. None of them were looking in my direction. I couldn't even fix my gaze on any of them for long, as they kept glancing at me like I had a stain on a white dress.
"Oh my god, he's here! He's finally here!" Some students screamed behind me, and all of them ahead of me began to run in the direction of the scream while I turned slowly, staring at them as they rushed down the stairs towards the entrance of the school building.
I stared at them in silence for about a minute as I walked down the stairs to the gathering. The one who stood beside me was munching something in his mouth despite his chubby look, and when our eyes made contact, I asked him what was going on.
"Are you new? The king is about to come in. His name is Alexandra, but he's popularly called Lex. He has not resumed since the past week, and now we'll give him a grand welcome. It's our culture."
He said all of these with a weird smile on his face as if it was some sort of achievement to welcome the school 'King' or whatever it was they called him.
I didn't want to bother him anymore as I turned my gaze, stretching my neck to see who the school king could be.
Seconds later, a huge frame began to walk through the door; he had curly hair, his height was a rare one, and so was the way he walked. He must truly be aware that he was the king.
"Lex, I made this tasty pie specially to welcome you back to school."
A girl who was average height and a little bit shy said to him as she walked in, presenting the beautifully designed pie to the supposed king. At first I thought it looked cute until he took the pie from her and smashed it to the ground.
"What? Why would he do that?" I asked the boy who was still munching so much in his mouth regardless.
"He doesn't take worthless things. How could she ever think he would accept that from her?"
He said this with so much pride and satisfaction in his king's action that it irritated me.
"Step away from me." The cold voice of the king commanded the girl, who is already covered in shame and shivering. "Keep going," he said to her as she kept taking some steps backwards away from him.
The floor was so quiet as everyone kept watching them. I was doing my best to control the anger in me, as this was my first day in school, and I didn't want to ruin things for myself. I knew that it could never be me in that situation because I'd pick up the pie from the floor and rub it off on his face.
"Now I want you to get on your knees and apologize to me, you mediocre," he spat at her in a way that got me really vexed.
"And why exactly is she going to do that?" I asked, thinking I said it in my head, but it came out so loud that everyone's attention was instantly drawn to me.
The boy beside me was staring at me too with his mouth wide open, and I could see the things he was munching scattered across in his mouth.
"Oh no, no, this is not good," I whispered to myself, but before I could think of what to do, everyone had already given a wide space between me and their king as he began to pick slow steps towards me.
"Was it you who said that?"
The look on his face showed pure irritation as he asked me that question, scanning me from my head to my toe and then back to my face again.
I was about to apologize when I sighted the girl he had just humiliated kneeling some steps behind him, and the will to apologize instantly left me.
"She meant well by preparing the pie herself and presenting it to you as a gift. The least you could have done is take it even though you knew you were never going to eat it. It's called appreciating others' efforts because it definitely took her some time to make that," I said to him, still trying to sound polite.
"I don't care if it took her entire lifetime to make that. Do I look like I eat food from the bins?" He fired at me; his voice was harsh and angry.
I could not understand how a person could be liked like that, so ill-mannered.
"Well, since you've asked me, you look like someone who lacks manners, and the last time I checked, like you always end up eating foods from the bin. "It's just a matter of time," I said to him, staring directly at his face, and I saw the look on his face tighten immediately as he raged towards me, but strangely, I didn't flinch.
He may look tough, but I was telling the truth, and all my life I was taught to never be ashamed of saying the truth. My werewolf father always said that in his letters.
He came very close to me, grabbing my shoulder so tight I could feel so much pain as he pressed his fingers while staring at my face. I tried to pretend like it didn't hurt so much even though it was almost unbearable.
"You little thing, did you just insult me?" He asked in a strangely calm voice.
"Let go of me!!" I yelled at him, pushing him off with all the strength in me. "You have no right to assault me. I know you lack manners, but sometimes you could try to pretend to be a cool person," I fired at him as I tried to manage the pain I was feeling in my shoulder.
"What? Who is this thing?" He asked, looking around as everyone's face kept moving across to us.
"I don't care what you are or whatever your name is; you should apologize to that lady for humiliating her like that despite her goodwill for you. Didn't your parents teach you to be nice to people?" I asked, intentionally walking forward to him this time.
"How dare you say a word about my parents?" He asked me with what looked like anger in his eyes, but I did not care.
"Oh, come on, this is not a time to defend your parents; this is a time to apologize to a woman who you just insulted. "Apologize to her now, and I am going to let this go," I said, standing a few steps away from him this time.
"Or else what?" He asked, moving closer.

The Contract Wife: Marriage Of Malice
He didn't finish. He didn't need to.
I didn't tell him to stop.
Instead, my fingers curled into his shirt, clutching the fabric as though it was my only anchor. Something in him snapped—something he had been holding back for too long. His mouth found mine in a kiss that wasn't tender, but hungry, desperate.
I gasped into him, his hand sliding up to cup my jaw, holding me as if afraid I might vanish.
"You drive me insane," he breathed against my mouth, his lips trailing to my throat. "I can't lose you, Ella. Not you."
My head fell back, a soft sound escaping me as his fingers memorized my waist. My anger melted beneath his desperation.
"James..." I whispered, more plea than protest.
His hand caught mine, fingers threading together tightly. "I'll bring him back. I swear it. Just... don't turn away from me. Please."
The word please—low, ragged, almost broken—undid me more than anything else could have.
