Chapter 1
Evelyn POV
The ultrasound photo was still warm from the printer when I stepped into the hallway, the glossy paper catching the fluorescent light as I tilted it toward me.
In it, a small curved shape floated in gray-white static — arms folded, head turned slightly, entirely unbothered by the world waiting outside.
Dr. Mercer had pointed to the spine, the heartbeat, the soft measurement lines, and said everything looked exactly as it should.
Twenty-four weeks. Healthy. Right on schedule.
Near the end of the scan, the baby had kicked once, a small definitive press against my ribs, as if to confirm what the numbers already told us.
I stood in the corridor outside the obstetrics suite and looked at the photo for a long moment, feeling the particular warmth that had been settling into my chest these past few months — something quieter than excitement, more like certainty.
My first instinct was to call Bryce. I reached for my phone before I remembered, and the remembering came with only the smallest dip in that warmth.
He had texted early this morning: [Today will be hectic — might be late tonight. Sorry, Ev.]
Northstar was in the middle of landing a client that could double their regional accounts.
I understood. I had always understood the shape of ambition, having grown up watching my father take calls through dinner.
The nurse who had walked me out paused at the reception desk and glanced toward the empty chair where a second person might have sat.
"Will your husband be joining you for the next appointment?" she asked, her voice carefully neutral.
"He's been swamped with work," I said, and smiled the way I had learned to smile when the answer was complicated but the situation was not. "I'll make sure he sees the photos today, though. He'll love this one."
She nodded, and I tucked the ultrasound image into my bag beside the printed growth chart, already thinking about the frame I had bought for the nursery wall.
In the car, I asked the driver to stop at the Italian deli on Atwells before heading downtown.
Bryce had a standing order there — prosciutto on ciabatta, no mustard, a bottle of the sparkling water he liked.
It was a small detour, twenty minutes at most, and the idea of walking into Northstar with lunch and the ultrasound photo felt right in a way that didn't require justification.
He hadn't been able to come to the appointment. I could bring the appointment to him.
The baby shifted as we pulled back onto the road, a slow rolling motion low in my abdomen, and I rested my hand there and looked out the window.
We had been married fourteen months. Sometimes that number still caught me off guard.
I had met Bryce in a seminar on supply chain economics during my junior year, in a classroom that smelled like old carpet and coffee.
He had not known who I was at first — or if he had, he gave no sign of it.
He did not ask about Hart Group, did not angle his seat toward mine when the professor mentioned regional logistics, did not do any of the small social calculations I had learned to recognize by then. He had simply argued with the case study on its own terms.
When I pushed back, he argued with me instead of deferring.
It was, I realized later, the first time in a long time that someone had looked at me and seen Evelyn rather than the family name behind it.
We spent a semester working on a joint project, drafting models in a coffee shop three blocks from campus.
The espresso was mediocre, and the chairs were uncomfortable, and neither of us cared.
He told me once, leaning over a spreadsheet at eleven at night, that he was afraid of becoming the kind of person who never got past where he started — that the ambition felt real but the path felt blocked by things he hadn't chosen and couldn't change.
I had heard a lot of polished self-presentation from men my age. What Bryce offered that night felt different: unguarded, a little raw.
I held that trust carefully.
When we started dating, I introduced him to a contact at a logistics firm where I knew the internship coordinator.
He resisted at first — "I don't want to be someone you have to sponsor, Evelyn" — and only agreed after I pointed out that the introduction was mine to make and the work would be entirely his.
He performed well. He always performed well.
Later, when Northstar was still a business plan and a half-finished pitch deck, I helped him find the first two clients willing to run a trial.
I had the relationships; he had the product. It seemed like a reasonable division of what we each had to offer.
My father had been quiet when I told him about the engagement. I told him he simply didn't know Bryce the way I did, and I believed it.
At the proposal, Bryce had said he wanted to build something that was his — not Hart-adjacent, not borrowed, but genuinely his own.
He said he wanted to earn the right to stand next to me without people seeing the family money first.
I had found that moving. I had written the check for Northstar's seed round three days later, and I had thought of it not as a financial transaction but as a form of faith.
Northstar's offices occupied the third floor of a converted building in the Jewelry District, all exposed brick and oversized windows, the kind of space that photographed well for a company trying to look like it had already arrived.
The woman at the front desk recognized me and waved me through with a smile, no call ahead, no visitor badge — I was the founder's wife and had been here enough times that the formality had dropped away.
I was halfway down the main hallway when one of the junior assistants, a young man named Tyler who always seemed slightly overwhelmed, looked up from his monitor and said, almost to himself, "Oh — I thought Mr. Calloway cleared his whole afternoon."
He caught himself and added quickly, "The noon lunch meeting got pushed. I think he's in his office."
I processed that in the moment and filed it smoothly: the client must have rescheduled. Bryce had said the day would be unpredictable. These things shifted.
I kept walking, the paper bag warm against my arm, the ultrasound photo in my coat pocket.
The hallway that led to his office bent slightly at the end. Before I reached the door, I noticed the chair beside the small waiting area near his suite — the low upholstered chair that usually held his extra jacket or a stack of files.
Draped over the back of it was a pale linen blazer. I knew that blazer. I had been with Sophia, my stepsister, when she bought it at a boutique on Thayer Street last spring, and I had told her the color suited her.
I stopped walking for just a moment, genuinely puzzled.
Sophia worked in marketing at a firm across town. She had no connection to Northstar that I was aware of.
I was still turning over a reasonable explanation — a lunch nearby, a coincidence, some introduction I had forgotten — when I heard her laugh from behind the half-open office door at the end of the hall.
It was unmistakably hers, that particular sound, low and deliberate.
The baby moved again, a slow, certain press, and I stood very still in the corridor.
I was not afraid. I was not angry. I was simply unable, for the first time in a very long time, to locate the explanation that would make this feel ordinary.
I shifted the lunch bag to my other hand. I took the last few steps to the door. I set my palm flat against it.
From inside, Sophia's voice dropped to something quieter, and she said, "She still doesn't know, does she?"
My hand tightened on the door handle.

Vincenzo Valentini is a man who sees the world as a business counter and human beings as merchandise.
The owner of an empire built upon corpses and submission, he is the reflection of pure perversity.
When fate places Andrew Thompson, the son of his greatest rival, into his hands, the plan was simple: use him, break him, and discard him like a toy that has lost its appeal.
What Vincenzo did not expect was that, beneath the youthful skin and the appearance of innocence, Andrew hid the same abyss as he did.
Vincenzo never wanted redemption. He never wanted someone to save him from his own darkness. He was seeking a mirror. And in Andrew, he found the partner who, upon seeing his blood-stained hands, does not recoil in terror, but trembles with desire.
In this perverse game, the "little toy" proves to be the perfect executioner. The mafia leader found someone who not only accepts his cruel side but cultivates it, feeding the monster Vincenzo has always been.
Where there should have been fear, lust emerged. Where there should have been hatred, a perverse loyalty was born. Andrew Thompson is the dark reflection of Vincenzo, the soldier the underworld did not see coming, and the man who proved that, for some, paradise only makes sense if it is in the middle of chaos.
Vincenzo opened the doors to his empire, but Andrew was the only one capable of invading his heart.
