Introduction

"You have no wolf."

In a world where your wolf determines your power, your rank, and your worth, those four words are a death sentence.

Vivienne Frost was born to inherit the most ancient Pack in the North. Silver wolf bloodline. Destined for power.

But on the night of her Awakening Ceremony, nothing answered.

Her father stopped seeing her as his daughter. She became a bargaining chip — traded into a political marriage with an Alpha she never chose.

So she runs.

Under a fake identity, Vivienne enters Thornfield Academy to uncover who is being groomed to replace her. But the most dangerous thing at Thornfield isn't the conspiracy.

It's Kael Thorne.

The most feared Alpha in the academy. A man raised to be a weapon, who has never let anyone close enough to see what that cost him.

Vivienne breaks that rule on day one.

She notices his scars. Challenges his dominance. Refuses to fear him.

And his wolf responds to her.

When danger closes in, Kael makes a choice no one expects — he marks her. Not because he trusts her. Because protecting her becomes the one instinct he can't fight.

But the girl they called wolfless was never truly empty.

Something ancient is waking inside her blood.

And the Alpha who marked her will have to choose — protect the bond, or let them both burn.

Chapter 1

Vivienne's POV

The dress was silver-gray. Hanging in my closet like a corpse someone forgot to bury.

My mother put it there this afternoon — smoothed the fabric, said "try it on later." Like fit mattered. Like I'd chosen any of this.

Ryder Sterling. The guy photographed leaving a Seattle bar with two Omegas last month. The one who hospitalized a Beta over a parking spot. My father's idea of a perfectly acceptable place to dump his defective daughter.

Not Dash. Never Dash.

Dash Sterling was the eldest son. He shook my hand at a Pack summit two years ago and held it half a second too long — and his scent hit me at the same time, warm cedar and sunlit leather, so steady it felt like standing in a clearing where nothing could hurt you.

He said, "You have your grandmother's eyes, did you know that?" and my stupid sixteen-year-old heart cracked open like it had been waiting for permission.

He treated me like a kid sister. Brought me cider at bonfire nights. Talked to me about books while everyone else talked over me. Never looked at me the way Alphas look at unmated females — hungry, appraising. Just looked at me like I was a person.

I never said a word. And now Marcus was sending me to the wrong brother.

I sat on the bed until I wasn't seeing the dress anymore. I was seeing the frozen lake. Seven months ago. My Awakening Ceremony.

Every Frost heir kneels at the lake's edge and calls their wolf. Three silver wolves in our bloodline history — all awakened before seventeen.

I knelt for forty minutes. Nothing came. Just me in a white dress on black ice, and a silence so heavy it pressed down on my shoulders like hands.

Marcus stood at the front. I watched his face cycle through hope, disappointment, disgust — then calculation. He started looking at me the way you look at furniture you're about to sell.

I'm not empty. My nose is better than any wolf I've met — I can smell a deer's body heat at three hundred meters, taste the exact sour note when my mother lies. But the ceremony wants a wolf, not a girl with a freakish nose.

And if what's sleeping inside me is a silver wolf — my life doesn't get better. It changes cages. Defective daughter or rare specimen. Either way, I'm a price tag.

So when Elara told me the Sterling deal was final, I didn't cry. I thought: Is there another way out?

I went to find my father. Not to beg.

His study door was Sitka spruce, thick enough to muffle a scream. I stopped with my hand on the handle.

His voice. On the phone. A tone I'd never heard — patient, warm, almost tender.

My nose confirmed it through the gap beneath the door: anticipation. The pleased kind. The kind that comes from watching something you've built take shape.

I'd never smelled that on him. Not once. Not for me.

"...registration's handled. He reports to Thornfield next semester. All expenses through my private account — nothing through Pack finance."

A pause.

"...Just settle in. Keep your head down. I'll handle the rest." Another pause. "...The Blackwell family will look after things on that end. They owe me."

Father is sending someone else to the Academy. To take my place. My... replacement. A Blackwell.

Blackwell. I didn't know the name. I filed it.

Then his voice dropped so low I had to press my face against the grain:

"...After she's married off, I'll bring you into the Pack formally. Until then — no one needs to know you exist."

My nails bit crescents into the doorframe.

She. Me. He wasn't just selling me — he was clearing space. Funding a replacement who got his warmth, his patience, his planning. Everything I'd never been worth.

Thornfield. That's where the replacement was going. And Dash was at the Sterling compound in Portland — close to Thornfield. Close enough.

The thought surfaced sharp and desperate: If Dash marked me before the wedding, the Ryder deal collapses. A marked wolf can't be re-bonded without the original marker's consent. Pack law.

It wasn't love. It was survival math that happened to smell like sunlight.

I pushed open the study door.

Marcus sat behind his desk, expression wiped clean.

"I'm not going to the Sterlings."

That inventory gaze. "And what value do you think you have?"

"I could attend Thornfield. Build connections—"

His fingers stilled. My nose caught the spike — wariness.

"A girl without a wolf? You think those Alphas will take you seriously?"

"Ryder Sterling is violent. Sending me there isn't alliance — it's waste disposal." I held his gaze. "And if I turn up at the Sterling estate with fresh bruises and no wolf, how long before the northern Packs start asking what kind of Alpha sells damaged goods?"

Something cracked behind his expression — not guilt, not pain, but the cold fury of a man who'd just been shown his own reflection and didn't like the angle. His scent went flat. Controlled. The way it always did right before he made someone pay.

He came around the desk. The Alpha Command hit first — his voice dropping to a frequency that bypassed ears and landed directly on the nervous system:

"Kneel. Release nothing."

My scent glands seized. Channels freezing from neck to spine. Every instinct to push back, to release even a whisper of pheromone, crushed flat. My knees hit stone.

Then he reached for the birch rod on the wall.

"Take off your jacket. Turn around."

My hands shook too badly to work the zipper. He pulled it down himself, turned me by the shoulder, shoved me forward until my palms hit the desk.

The first strike landed across my shoulder blades. The birch splits skin on contact without restraint — and he wasn't using any. The sound was wet. I bit through my cheek and tasted blood.

Seven strikes. Always above the waist. Never the face.

Because the face is what the Sterlings are buying.

When he stopped, blood was soaking through my shirt in three places. The Command meant I couldn't even release distress pheromones — couldn't signal pain, couldn't call for help through scent. Beaten in chemical silence.

"Back to your room. Starting tomorrow, you don't leave this house."

He walked out.

I stayed bent over the desk. Breathing through my teeth.

Then something moved. Deep. Below the pain, below the Command's reach — a thread of heat climbed my spine, brief and furious.

My vision went bright at the edges. Not light from outside. Light from inside — like something behind my own eyes had opened them, looked out through me, and been shoved back down before it could snarl.

The warmth vanished. But I'd felt it.

I pulled my jacket on over the blood. Walked out.

Elara stood in the hallway. Her eyes went to my back — the jacket was already staining through. Her nostrils flared once. Her hand lifted halfway — fingers reaching toward my shoulder — then dropped back to her side.

She said nothing.

Love that can't make you speak isn't love. It's furniture.

I walked past her. Locked my door.

Thornfield. That's where he was sending my replacement. That's where the answers were. And if I could find that person before Marcus brought him into the Pack formally — I'd have the one thing Marcus couldn't afford to lose: proof of his betrayal.

The shirt had stuck to the wounds again. I sat on the edge of the bed, spine straight because leaning back wasn't an option anymore, and picked up my phone.

One text to Helena — Marcus's sister, the only Frost who'd ever looked at me like I was more than a bloodline failure: Coming to you. Tonight. Don't tell Marcus.

Her reply came in under a minute: Door's open. Hurry.

I pulled a Fairbanks bus schedule from my desk drawer —

dog-eared, dated last week. Left it on the nightstand where the morning search would find it. Let them think I ran deeper into the interior, further north, further into nowhere.

Coat. Bag. The window. Not the door.
