Introduction
With no one to trust, she ran to London. She built herself up from nothing. Strong. Smart. Untouchable. A woman no one could break again.
Now she’s back.
Not for love.
For revenge.
She wants her name cleared. She wants the people who hurt her to fall to their knees. And she wants to take everything they thought she would never have again.
But Ethan, her ex-husband, the man who shattered her world, suddenly wants her back. He wants answers. He wants the child he never knew. And he wants Liana in his arms again.
Too late.
Liana didn’t return to be claimed. She came back to burn the lies down… even if Ethan sets fire to her plans, her heart, and the walls she built.
This time, she’s not the one who will lose everything.
Chapter 1
"You look lovely tonight, Liana. Very… voluminous."
Margaret D'Arden smiled as she said it, her lips too pink, her pearls too loud as they clacked together with every deliberate step she took toward me. The word landed softly, the way a blade does when the person holding it knows exactly what they are doing and enjoys the knowing.
I kept my smile in place. "Thank you, Mrs. D'Arden."
She moved on without another word, satisfied, her pearls swinging gently, leaving me standing near the entrance of the ballroom with the weight of that single sentence pressing down on my chest. I straightened my back, adjusted the fold of my gown, and reminded myself to breathe.
The D'Arden ballroom was exactly what it always was on nights like this. The chandeliers threw gold light across every surface, and every surface had been polished until it gave back a version of you that was slightly too bright and slightly too exposed. The women moved through the crowd in gowns that fit them like a second skin, and the men stood in small clusters, filling the air with the sound of their own certainty. The music kept everything moving at just the right pace, and the laughter came on cue, and everyone said the right things to the right people in the right order.
I had learned to exist inside rooms like this. I had spent five years learning how.
It had not been natural, not at first. When Ethan first brought me into his world, I had felt the difference between his life and mine the way you feel a change in temperature when you step from one room into another. Everything in his world was calibrated. The right fork, the right greeting, the right length of pause before you laughed at something. There was a language to it, and I had worked hard to become fluent.
I had thought that fluency was enough. I had thought it would make me belong here.
I moved deeper into the crowd, nodding at faces I recognized and smiling at ones I did not. Near the champagne fountain, a cluster of women stood close together, their voices low and pointed the way women's voices get when the topic is someone in the room. I caught pieces of the conversation as I passed.
"I heard he is already making plans."
"Can you believe she still shows up to these things?"
I did not slow down. I kept walking, my heels quiet against the marble, my face arranged carefully.
I found Ethan near the far end of the room, which was exactly where I expected him to be. He stood in the middle of a small group, laughing at something someone had just said. His suit was perfect. His posture was easy. He looked like a man who had everything exactly where he wanted it, and for a long time, that had made me proud. I had looked at him in rooms like this and felt something warm and certain. That feeling was gone now. I could not remember exactly when it had left, only that it had.
Standing beside him was Clara.
She was the woman I had introduced to him three years ago. My colleague. My friend. The person I had trusted enough to bring into my life without thinking twice about it, because that was what you did with people you trusted. You brought them in. She stood close to him now, closer than she needed to, and she was laughing at the same thing he was laughing at, and there was an ease between them that had a specific quality to it, the kind of ease that is not just familiarity.
My stomach turned over slowly.
I walked toward them. I kept my pace even.
"Ethan," I said.
He turned his head just slightly. Not fully toward me, not in the way a person turns when they are glad you have arrived. Just enough to register that I had spoken. "Not now," he said. "We are in the middle of something."
He turned back to Clara.
I stood there for a moment. The music kept playing. Someone near the window laughed at something. The champagne fountain bubbled quietly. I pressed my fingers together inside the folds of my gown and then I turned and walked away, keeping my chin level and my shoulders straight, not giving the women near the fountain anything to work with.
I made my way to the restroom at the far end of the hall and pushed open the door. The noise of the ballroom faded. I stood at one of the sinks and looked at myself in the mirror. My hair was in place. My makeup had not moved. I looked exactly the way I was supposed to look, which was the only thing about the evening that was going according to plan.
I turned on the tap and pressed cold water to the inside of my wrists. I stood there and breathed.
The door opened behind me. I knew without turning around.
"You look tense," Clara said. Her voice was gentle and warm, coated in the kind of concern that sounds real until you have heard it enough times to understand what lives underneath it. "Are you okay?"
I looked at her reflection in the mirror. I thought about the three years I had known her. I thought about the conversations we had shared over late lunches and long phone calls. I thought about the things I had told her about my marriage when my marriage had started to feel like something I was managing rather than living. I thought about the way she had been standing beside my husband just now, and the way he had laughed, and the ease of it.
"I am fine," I said.
She tilted her head, the small smile still resting on her face. "You are too good-hearted, Liana. You never quite see what is right in front of you."
I held her gaze in the mirror for a long moment. I thought about asking her what she meant. I thought about what she might say. I decided I was not ready to hear it stated plainly, not tonight, not in a room attached to a ballroom full of people who were already watching.
I dried my hands, straightened my gown, and walked back out.
The night continued. The music played through its rotations. People said things to me that I answered correctly, and I asked questions at the right moments, and I smiled when it was called for. I moved through the rest of the evening the way I had learned to move through all of them, with my surface in order and everything else held still underneath.
But something had shifted tonight in a way that was harder to hold still. I had felt it in Ethan's half turn when I said his name. I had felt it in Clara's smile in the mirror. I had felt it in the women near the fountain and in the word voluminous and in the particular quality of the laughter I had heard between my husband and my friend.
Something had shifted, the way a stone shifts underfoot right before you lose your balance.
I did not fall. Not that night.
But I felt it coming.

Kieran Vaughn. Wealthy lawyer, werewolf, and apparently, he thinks I'm his mate.
Here's the problem: I don't do relationships. I definitely don't do supernatural things. I absolutely don't do rich guys who think they can control my life just because their inner wolf has decided I smell like home.
When hunters start targeting me to get to him, Kieran drags me into his pristine penthouse for "protection." Now I'm living with a man who looks at me like I'm his last meal, whose touch sets my skin on fire, and who's barely holding onto his control.
He says everyone he loves dies. I say that's not my problem except it is because I'm falling for this broken, dangerous man and his beast.
And in his world? Love will get you killed.
