Introduction

Nessa Calder has spent her entire life skating in her father’s shadow.

One more competition could earn her a place on the Olympic team—and finally prove her success belongs to her, not the powerful sports executive who has controlled every part of her career.

Then she tears her ankle.

The federation assigns the only specialist they trust who isn’t on her father’s payroll:

Brennan Kessler.

Hockey captain. Certified conditioning specialist.

The man who has hated the Calder name for six years.

Now he’s in charge of her recovery.

Nessa expects hostility.

What she gets is worse—a man who refuses to treat her like a protected princess and pushes her until the carefully constructed image of her life starts to crack.

Their sessions become battles.

The battles become something neither of them can control.

Until Nessa finds proof that the scandal that destroyed Brennan’s career was never an accident.

Now she has to choose:

Protect the father who raised her…

or tell the truth and risk losing everything she’s ever worked for.

Because falling for the man who wants to destroy her family was never part of the plan.

And once the truth comes out, neither of them may survive the fallout.

Chapter 1

Nessa POV

The arena air cut cold and metallic into my lungs. Fifty feet up, behind the VIP glass, my father held a digital stopwatch. He didn’t wave and blink. He just watched.

“Higher, Nessa.” Victor’s voice rasped through the earbud. “Speed creates height. Height creates perfection.”

I dug my left blade deep and pushed harder. Six hours had already passed, my legs burning and my shoulders forced back. One clean Quad Lutz locked my Olympic Qualifier spot. One clean jump and he couldn’t threaten to drop me from his firm again.

Three clean triples that morning. The coaches nodded while the junior trainers took notes. None of it mattered if the Quad failed. He’d said it at breakfast while cutting eggs: “Medals are not built on almost.”

I slammed the toe pick into the ice and threw my full weight into the rotation as the lights blurred around me—one, two, three, four.

Landing.

My right blade caught the groove wrong, twisting my joint with a loud snap that shot up my shin. Pain exploded as I hit the ice hard, my shoulder slamming into the barrier and my leg dragging behind me.

I couldn’t breathe. Cold water soaked through my tights as I curled up, clutching the joint.

“Get up, Nessa.” Flat tone. “Winners don’t bleed on the ice. Get up before the press in the upper lounge sees you.”

“Dad—” I pressed my face to the ice. “I can’t move my foot.”

“Nothing is broken that cannot be wrapped. Forty-eight days until qualifiers. Stand up on your own feet.”

I planted my palms on the slick surface and forced my torso up. The blade touched down, and agony ripped up my calf. My knee buckled, and I crashed back onto the ice.

Pain whitewashed everything, but underneath it a smaller, uglier thought surfaced: He looks more angry than worried.

Two paramedics jogged out with an orange stretcher.

“Send them away,” Victor ordered. “No stretchers. No headlines. You walk to the car on your own, or I cancel every sponsor contract by midnight.”

I looked up. He turned his back, adjusted his tie, and walked out of the booth.

In the private locker room, the steel door slammed shut. He didn’t ask how I felt or check my foot. He unzipped the leather bag and pulled out a prescription bottle and a bottle of water.

“Take two.”

“Dad, no. Dr. Evans said X-ray first.”

“Evans works for the federation. I work for your career.” He opened my hand and pressed the pills into my palm. “These will keep the swelling down overnight. Five a.m. tomorrow, you’re back on the ice. You are not losing your spot to a backup.”

“I can’t jump on this. You heard the sound.”

He leaned in until his eyes were inches from mine. “You will jump if I tell you to jump. Sponsors care about gold, not your pain. I built this career. Do not ruin it because you lack discipline.”

He closed my fingers around the pills, turned, and locked the door from the outside.

Twenty minutes later, the side door unlocked. Dr. Evans walked in, tablet in hand, face pale.

“He left?”

I nodded and stared at my swollen, discolored foot as the numbness faded into a deep, throbbing ache.

“Emergency scan from the mobile unit.” He slid the tablet over, showing a bright red shadow at the base of the ankle joint.

“Broken?”

“Severe ligament tearing and joint micro-fractures. One hard landing and it shatters. Surgery just to walk down the street.”

I buried my face. “He wants me on the ice at five.”

“Not this time. The scans went straight to the Sports Federation Medical Board and were flagged twenty minutes ago. New safety mandates. Mandatory medical leave.”

My heart hammered. “They’re pulling me from the qualifiers?”

“Not yet. Intensive off-ice rehab under a federation-appointed specialist. No ice until he clears you.”

Relief, then dread. “Victor will hire lawyers. Overrule it.”

“He tried, but the Board rejected the appeal ten minutes ago. They assigned a specialist who doesn’t answer to his money.”

A thin blue folder across the bench. I flipped it open.

He had dark, messy hair, a sharp jaw shadowed by stubble, and cold gray eyes like a thunderstorm.

Brennan Kessler.

My breath hitched. “He’s a hockey player. He hates my family.”

“Only certified specialist available who isn’t on the payroll. Total authority over your schedule.”

The door banged open. Victor stood in the doorway, phone clenched in his hand, his face dark with rage. He looked at Evans, then at the folder in my lap.

“This is a joke. I will not let a disgraced street fighter touch my daughter’s training.”

“The decision is final,” Evans said. “She doesn’t report to his facility; Olympic eligibility is cancelled permanently.”

Victor glared at me, jaw clenched, a muscle twitching in his cheek. He bent close to my ear. “You start tomorrow at six. Do not embarrass me. Get through his program and get back on the ice.”

He marched out.

Evans looked at me with quiet pity. “Brennan Kessler doesn’t take excuses. Be ready.”

I stared at the photo as dark eyes glared through the paper. My ankle throbbed under the wrap, and cold fear settled in my stomach.

It wasn’t just an injury anymore. I was walking straight into the hands of a man who had every reason to want my family destroyed.

I had forty-eight days to heal enough to land the jumps that kept my name on the Olympic list. The only person standing between me and the ice was Brennan Kessler.

I closed the folder and pressed it to my chest. Tomorrow at six, I would walk into his facility on crutches and try not to show him how much the thought of him already hurt.

you are my queen, and I want to kiss you now,” he said.
I’m not sure that was what I expected him to say, but I had been waiting to hear it. I smiled playfully, looking at him. “Yes, my king,” I said.
Moments, his lips were on mine. The kiss was soft and gentle at first, his hands wrapped around my waist, pulling me close to him; I let my arms find their way around his neck. I felt his tongue gently run along my lower lip and couldn’t help the soft moan that escaped my mouth at its touch. Von only took that as permission and slipped his tongue into my mouth; I let my tongue explore his mouth as he did the same to mine. Eventually, the kiss grew deeper, and before I knew it, I was straddling his lap in one quick motion. His hands found their way to my hair, tangled in it as he tugged it lightly in his grip. I couldn’t help moaning against his lips; a growl of pleasure came from deep in his throat.

My name is Arianna Maree Paxton however I Hate that name my parents gave me that name, after my , great-great grandmother. So I go by Ari. you see my parents are hardly that they hate me in every way possible. I am only here to be their slave and plaything, otherwise they probably would of killed me a long time ago. My family belong to a pride of snow leopards well now were more of a group then a pride most of us have died out. I have a feeling my species will be coming to a end soon and the worst part of it is that we will die with such a shameful legacy left behind one that I want no part of.

Were simply a small part of the shifter community, most every other shifter, magical beings live in harmony with humans and other beings. However, they do have their own rules they each follow but for the most part the respect each other, it doesn’t mean they share anything by any means. Each has their own schools, hospitals, and way of living but terrroity and lives are generally respected. However, I feel that is mostly in part to fear of the Royal family.

However my species is dying out because they have lost their way , when you force your leopard to do horrid things it will eventually leave you , which was what was happing all around me , when that happens you can no longer find a mate , and usually you lose your mind. Without mates we can no longer reproduce hence the feeling of the end coming soon. Or at least I thought that was the reason I have that feeling but I kind of feel like something bigger is on the way.
