The Cursed Princess

Introduction
Then four princes arrived.
Each wanted the cursed princess as his queen, each offering her something different—a kingdom, a crown, a rose, or a promise.
But Iserine had no intention of waiting for a prince to decide her fate.
She would choose her own crown.
Even if she had to fight fate itself to claim it.
Chapter 1
Long before the world remembered its own name, the continent was known as Astora.
It was an age forged by wind and oaths.
Mountains knelt upon the horizon like silent gods. Great rivers wound through fertile plains like silver chains. Ancient sanctuaries rang their morning bells from atop towering cliffs, rousing white ravens, frost deer, and knights riding off to distant wars.
Each city-state was a jewel set into the breastbone of fate, radiant yet fragile. Every monarch knew that a crown was nothing more than a borrowed flame. If it failed to light the way for their people, it would turn and scorch the brow of the one who wore it.
At the heart of Astora stood a kingdom called Edmont.
Of all the kingdoms, Edmont had once been the wealthiest, the most peaceful, and the one closest to legend.
Its capital was built of white stone, its towering walls like the bones of a giant left behind in the mortal world.
In its gardens grew golden roses brought from the Southern Seas. When spring arrived, the entire royal city seemed to bathe in a gentle sea of gold.
The palace domes were tiled with blue and gold glass, as though a corner of the night sky had been cut away and set above the heads of mortals.
And in this kingdom, blessed by poetry, power, and divine favor alike, a princess was born.
On the night of her birth, thunder rolled among the distant mountains, and torrential rain bent the mighty oaks beneath its weight. It was as though even the heavens held their breath before an event both magnificent and ill-omened.
Deep within the palace, candles were lit in rows as twelve summoned sages arrived at the great hall from every corner of the realm.
Among them was a prophet from the frozen wastes of the North, an herbalist who had emerged from the ancient forests, an astronomer who carried an astrolabe and could understand the whispers of the stars, and a priest in white robes who possessed the sacred laws of antiquity.
One by one, they approached the swaddled infant and bestowed upon her twelve blessings.
The first blessed her with a merciful heart.
The second, with wisdom beyond that of ordinary mortals.
The third, with courage that no blade could break.
The fourth, with the resolve to make difficult choices in the face of adversity.
The fifth, with the foresight to lead others.
The sixth, with the ability to hear the truth hidden behind lies.
The seventh, with an unyielding spirit that would never falter.
The eighth, with words that could calm a storm and silence that could turn aside poisoned arrows.
The ninth, with the wisdom to heal and the wisdom to sacrifice.
The tenth, with loyalty that would not be swayed by power.
The eleventh, with the promise that one day she would prove worthy of her crown.
And the twelfth bowed low, offering the final blessing of all—glory.
As the twelve blessings settled upon the child, the hall filled with brilliant light, as though dawn had arrived ahead of its time.
The attendants fell to their knees. The king and queen exchanged joyful smiles, certain that this night would become the brightest page in their dynasty's history.
But at that very moment, the wind outside the palace changed.
It was not a bitter wind, but a cold one, as though it had risen from somewhere deep beneath the earth. It carried the damp scent of ashes and grave soil, along with the faintest trace of rust.
The window frames trembled. Every candle flame tilted in unison. The silver candelabras in the great hall began to emit a thin, shrill ringing, like the slow awakening of some unwelcome omen.
Everyone looked up.
The thirteenth guest had passed through the unguarded palace gates.
She wore a long, charcoal-gray robe, its hem trailing behind her like the night itself. Flowers seemed to draw in their petals as she passed.
Her hood concealed most of her face, revealing only a pale chin and a pair of impossibly dark eyes.
They were not the eyes of an ordinary mortal woman. They were like two ancient wells sealed beneath ice—silent, shadowed, and devoid of warmth. Eyes that had witnessed the fall of dynasties and forests of corpses.
The palace guards rushed forward, crossing their spears to bar her way.
She merely raised one hand and flicked her fingers.
The spearheads, forged from tempered steel, swung aside as though pushed by an invisible tide, clanging against one another in a series of shrill, metallic crashes. The soldiers stumbled backward, the color draining from their faces.
The king sprang to his feet. The queen pressed a hand tightly to her chest. The twelve sages all changed expression at once.
For they recognized her.
She was the thirteenth blessing-bearer, the one the royal family had turned away.
She was the witch of legend, the one who walked among ashes and thorns.
She was one of those names once written into prayers, only to be burned in braziers.
She was ill omen incarnate.
She walked slowly toward the cradle.
The infant slept peacefully, her cheeks like newly opened white roses, her lashes resting softly against her skin. She looked so innocent, so utterly harmless.
She had no idea that she stood at the very center of fate, on the edge of a fracture that would one day split the future of an entire kingdom.
The witch gazed down at the infant. Her voice was low and clear, like a tide moving beneath a sheet of ice.
“Since the twelve sages have bestowed their blessings, I shall offer the thirteenth.”
A deathly silence fell over the hall.
She slowly raised her withered, pale fingers and pointed at the infant's chest, as though she meant to brand an irreversible mark deep into the child's soul.
“When she turns sixteen,” the witch said, “she will be pierced by the spindle of fate and fall into a sleep that lasts a hundred years. No herb in any kingdom will rouse her. No bell in any sanctuary will call her back. In a dreamless darkness, she will lose her name, forget her bloodline, forget her crown, and forget everyone who ever believed they could control her destiny.”
She paused. Her gaze swept over the king and queen before settling at last on the infant's tiny fingers.
“Only a kiss from one who does not belong to her can bring her back to the world of the living.”
The moment those words fell, it was as though an invisible sword had cleaved the great hall in two.
The queen gasped. The king drew his sword in a fit of fury. The sages recoiled, seemingly shaken by the chill carried within the words themselves.
They all understood what the curse truly was: a shackle forged in the depths of fate.
It bound the child's future to waiting, to helplessness, to the passive role of one who must be awakened and saved by another.
But the witch did not stop.
She gazed at the infant as though she saw something in the child's future that would displease her greatly. A faint, almost cruel smile touched her lips.
“Remember,” she whispered. “The thorns shall bloom before the roses, and sleep shall descend before the dawn. No one can defy this path. No one.”
At the final word, the youngest of the twelve sages—the quietest and least gifted with words—suddenly stepped forward.
He was still young, and his eyes retained a brightness untouched by the wear of worldly experience. He looked at the witch without fear, his expression calm with a certainty that needed no words.
Then he lowered his head and spoke softly, as though addressing the infant, or perhaps the future itself.
“If fate has truly been written, then there must also be someone who will awaken and rewrite it with their own hands.”
The witch slowly turned her head and looked directly at the young sage for the first time.
The cold in her eyes was like the layer of ice at the bottom of a deep well, so dark and ancient that it sent a chill through everyone who saw it.
Yet she did not erupt in anger. She simply studied him for a long moment, as though committing to memory a name that time would eventually swallow.
Then she smiled. The expression was faint, but every candle flame in the hall trembled.
“Then let me see,” she said, “who dares to defy fate.”
With that, she turned and left.
She did not run, vanish in a cloud of smoke, or transform into a raven or a gust of wind before their very eyes.
She simply crossed the great hall at an unhurried pace, step by step, toward the open palace gates.
Yet as her footsteps receded, the darkness beyond the great hall seemed to gather and close in with an unseen force, as though even the heavens were making way for her.
Only after her figure had vanished completely into the depths of the palace darkness did the heavy silence settle over the hall once more, like a boulder crushing everything beneath it.
The queen sank into her chair, her fingertips trembling.
The king stood with a face like thunder, his sword still raised high, yet unable to find an enemy worthy of its blade.
The attendants lowered their heads and said nothing, like a gathering of people who had suddenly heard the footsteps of the apocalypse.
And the infant in her cradle continued to sleep soundly.
She knew nothing of the fate that had just been written for her. She knew nothing of the story that was only beginning.
Years later, the history books would record that night as follows:
[The kingdom's most precious princess was born amid a torrential storm, and the thirteenth blessing-bearer left upon her brow a prophecy of eternal sleep.]
It was the prelude to war.
The final challenge the old order would hurl at the future.
And the moment fate gently placed its cruelest, most glorious piece upon the board at the dawn of a kingdom.
That piece would one day learn to wield a sword, to say no, to rule—and to tear open her own dawn with her bare hands, amid thorns and flames.
