Introduction
When Ivy's mother collapses from heart failure, medical bills leave her desperate. She accepts a live in tutoring job without asking the family name. Too late, she realizes it is the Holloway mansion. Now she lives down the hall from her enemy.
Forced into fake dating to kill rumors, Ivy and Jace draw lines: public only, no kissing, end of football season. But late night panic attacks, a lonely little brother, and the weight of secrets blur every line. Just as Ivy falls for the boy behind the bully, she discovers an old recording. Jace mocking her freshman year. The betrayal shatters everything.
Two years later, Jace suffers a career ending knee injury. His rehab specialist walks in. It is Ivy. Now he must do more than apologize. He must confess his cruelty to the world and prove he is not the boy who hated her first. He is the man who will love her last.
Chapter 1
Ivy's POV
"Does the scholarship cover your lunch or do you have to beg for that too?"
I read those words three times in the bathroom stall, my back pressed against the cold tile, the note trembling slightly in my fingers. Someone's blow dryer hummed on the other side of the wall, drowning out the sound of my own breathing. I folded the paper back into its original creases, smaller and smaller until it fit into the pocket of my cardigan, and I washed my hands like I'd touched something dirty even though I hadn't. That was the thing about notes like this one. They left a residue you couldn't scrub off.
My name is Ivy Monroe. Senior year, scholarship student. My grandmother spent her last years writing essays for this chance. Every Sunday morning she sat at our kitchen table with reading glasses held together by a rubber band, typing on an old laptop until her fingers cramped. She wrote about potential and excellence and what education could do for a girl with nothing but her own mind. She wrote about hard work and believing in yourself even when no one else did. She wrote eight applications, got rejected four times, and kept writing anyway. She died four months before the acceptance letter arrived. I kept that letter in my wallet, not for motivation but because sometimes I needed to touch something she had touched, the last thing she fought for that I could still hold in my hands. And someone had made a joke out of it this morning.
The hallway outside Room 204 was crowded when I got there, students leaning against lockers, talking in groups, laughing at things I couldn't hear. I walked past them without looking up, my chin tucked, my shoulders curved inward like I was trying to fold myself into something smaller than I was. That was fine. That was safe. Invisibility wasn't a punishment at Ashridge Academy, it was a survival strategy. I sat in the middle back row, uncapped my pen, wrote the date at the top of a fresh page, and the note stayed in my pocket like a weight while I stared at the blank paper and thought about my grandmother's hands. The way they looked when she typed, the way she would stop and rub her fingers because they hurt but she never complained. She just kept going. She believed in me on the days I couldn't believe in myself.
Then the door opened and everything shifted.
Jace Holloway walked in six minutes late and the entire energy of the room changed. Girls sat up straighter. Boys did that chin lift thing. Even Mr. Davenport, who once made a varsity captain cry over a misplaced comma, waved toward an open seat like it was an honor. Everybody knew Jace Holloway, starting quarterback since sophomore year, team captain, son of Richard Holloway whose name was on three buildings at this school. He walked like he'd never once wondered if he belonged anywhere. Like the air itself made room for him. I had a rule for people like him. Eyes down, don't engage, stay out of their orbit. I learned that rule the hard way freshman year when I made eye contact with the wrong person, smiled at someone too far above me in the school's invisible hierarchy, and ended up with a week of whispers and a note in my locker I took three days to forget. So I never made that mistake again.
The only open seat was directly in front of mine. Of course it was.
He sat down and pulled out a leather notebook and a silver pen, taking up space like someone who'd never been told to make himself smaller. He smelled expensive, some clean cologne that probably cost more than my entire wardrobe, and the note in my pocket felt heavier as I pressed my fingers against it until the paper crinkled. I focused on Mr. Davenport's voice, on the symbolism of the green light, on anything that wasn't the broad line of Jace's shoulders or the way his hair curled slightly at the back of his neck.
Eleven minutes into the lecture he turned around. Not to talk to someone. To look at me. His eyes moved over my worn cardigan, my lunch bag peeking out of my backpack, my cheap spiral notebook. Then he leaned toward Marcus beside him and didn't even bother to whisper low enough.
"Who brings a brown bag lunch to Ashridge? What is she saving up for, a second scholarship?"
Marcus laughed. Someone nearby covered her mouth. Mr. Davenport kept talking about Gatsby's obsession with Daisy and nobody else seemed to notice, or maybe they just didn't care enough to react. My face stayed still because that was the one thing I could control, the careful blankness I had perfected over three years of being the scholarship girl in a room full of people who had never worried about grocery bills or electric shutoff notices. I stared at my notes and wrote nothing. Jace turned back to the front and never looked at me again. But the words hung in the air between us, thick and sharp, and the note suddenly made sense. The handwriting I didn't recognize, that word scholarship, someone who knew exactly where to aim.
My grandmother wrote eight applications, got rejected four times, kept writing, and died without knowing if it worked. But she kept going anyway because she believed in me on the days I couldn't believe in myself, and I thought about her at the kitchen table, glasses held together by a rubber band, fingers moving across the keyboard, eyes tired but determined. She never complained. She never stopped. She just kept going.
The bell rang and Jace grabbed his bag and walked out while everyone filed past. I stayed seated, my hand still in my pocket touching the note, just breathing, just thinking. The green light meant hope, Mr. Davenport had said. The green light meant reaching for something just out of grasp. My grandmother reached for me. She reached so hard it cost her everything. And here I was in a school built on her sacrifice, with a crumpled piece of paper in my pocket and a boy who didn't even know my name making sure I remembered my place.
I left the classroom last and walked to my locker with my eyes fixed on the floor, and somewhere between third period and lunch I realized I had stopped crying. Not because it didn't hurt but because I had run out of tears for people who saw me as nothing. I pressed my forehead against the cool metal of my locker and told myself this year was going to be bad, I already knew that. What I didn't know was that I would end up living in his house, hearing him cry through walls he thought were thick enough, learning things about him he'd never told anyone. It all started with a video I never meant to record, a moment I wasn't supposed to witness, a truth that would unravel everything he built. I just didn't know it yet.

“Fuckkk”, I couldn’t help but scream.
“You need to learn to be obedient” he said as he kept thrusting into me. When I felt his hands on my clit my body shook.
“Asher please, it’s too much”.
“No. if I really wanted to punish you, I would give you all of me”, he said against my ears and my entire body froze. Suddenly he moved and I was standing again. This man was insane.

The Contract Wife: Marriage Of Malice
He didn't finish. He didn't need to.
I didn't tell him to stop.
Instead, my fingers curled into his shirt, clutching the fabric as though it was my only anchor. Something in him snapped—something he had been holding back for too long. His mouth found mine in a kiss that wasn't tender, but hungry, desperate.
I gasped into him, his hand sliding up to cup my jaw, holding me as if afraid I might vanish.
"You drive me insane," he breathed against my mouth, his lips trailing to my throat. "I can't lose you, Ella. Not you."
My head fell back, a soft sound escaping me as his fingers memorized my waist. My anger melted beneath his desperation.
"James..." I whispered, more plea than protest.
His hand caught mine, fingers threading together tightly. "I'll bring him back. I swear it. Just... don't turn away from me. Please."
The word please—low, ragged, almost broken—undid me more than anything else could have.
