Introduction
Nolan knelt before me and said he wanted to rebuild our marriage — that I should rest at home. I thought it was fate's only compensation for the child it had taken.
Then one day, while planning his fortieth-birthday surprise at the club, I heard him pin the brand director Aubrey against a wall of wisteria and kiss her —
"The moment the tenth-anniversary gala ends and the funding lands, my CEO seat is locked. She can throw all the fits she wants — she won't touch my control. Three more weeks."
I stood there. I didn't walk in. I didn't cry.
The next day, I returned to headquarters under the pretext of "slowly finding my footing," and began pulling every financial record.
A $20,000-a-month Manhattan apartment booked as a "VIP Client Hospitality Suite." Two weeks in Paris logged as a "European Market Study." Monthly consulting fees flowing straight into Aubrey's private studio.
And worse — he forged my signature, attaching it to a funding proposal that gutted my equity and would cut me out of the company I built with my own hands.
He was waiting for the gala to throw me out.
So was I.

Three months after my miscarriage, my family wore me down until I stepped off the board.

Chapter 1
Nolan tossed his travel bag carelessly in the foyer, walked straight to the lounge chair by the floor-to-ceiling window, half-knelt in front of me, and gripped my cold fingers tightly in both hands.
"I'm home, Evelyn."
He looked into my eyes, his voice earnest. "This business trip to Europe made me realize — nothing in this world matters more than you."
I gazed quietly at the face I had loved since our college days.
Twenty years. Side by side, we had taken a crumbling beachside motel in South Carolina and built it, step by step, into a luxury boutique hotel group spanning the entire East Coast.
But the miscarriage three months ago hadn't only taken the child we'd longed for — it had drained every ounce of life from me.
Under relentless pressure from both families, I had stepped away from the board's daily management and locked myself inside this empty estate, trying to stitch the torn fabric of my life back together.
"I want to rebuild our marriage," Nolan said tenderly, stroking my cheek and tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. His gaze seemed utterly devoted. "I'll walk through this valley with you. Let's start over — okay?"
In that moment, I nearly wept.
I thought this was fate's way of offering some merciful compensation after so cruelly taking my child.
I leaned my head against his broad shoulder, breathing in the familiar cedar scent of his bespoke suit.
But beneath that reassuring woodsy note, my nose seemed to catch a faint trace of something that didn't belong to him — a cloying fig perfume.
Perhaps I was too desperate for redemption to think much of it at the time.
To reciprocate his gesture, two days later I drove to the Oak Private Club in downtown Charleston.
Nolan's fortieth birthday was only three weeks away. I planned to reserve the rooftop cigar lounge — his favorite spot — and personally organize an intimate surprise dinner.
Walking along the wisteria-draped corridor toward the manager's office, I had to pass through a secluded side courtyard.
It was there, in the cool early-spring air, that a few overheard words shattered my entire existence.
"Go on — run back to your beachfront mansion and keep playing the model husband."
The voice was young, arrogant, and brimming with vitality.
Aubrey Cole. The group's brand director.
Two years ago, Nolan had personally poached her from New York at a premium salary — a marketing prodigy, still only twenty-nine.
My feet nailed themselves to the ivy-covered flagstone path.
Through the gap in the wrought-iron gate, I saw them.
Nolan had Aubrey pressed against the mottled brick wall, his posture intimate and possessive.
"Don't be like this, Aubrey. You know I love you. Those two weeks in Paris — haven't I proven how I feel?"
Paris? He had told me it was investor meetings in London and Frankfurt.
An invisible hand clamped around my throat. My heart hammered against my ribs — desperate, suffocating thuds.
Aubrey let out a cold laugh, her fingertip tracing a flirtatious line down Nolan's silk tie. "Proven how you feel? Your proof is dumping me alone at the club and running home to comfort your hysterical wife. Nolan, I'm sick of hiding in the shadows. How much longer do you expect me to wait?"
"Soon, baby. I promise." Nolan tightened his arms around her, his voice calm and calculated. "I need to keep Evelyn steady first. The next funding round is next month, and more importantly, the board vote is imminent. You know how critical Evelyn's vote is. Without her public endorsement as co-founder — without her casting that vote in my favor — those old guard directors who resent me could kick me out at any time."
"So how long are you going to hide this from her?" Aubrey pressed.
"The moment the flagship hotel's tenth-anniversary gala is over, I'll come clean." Nolan kissed her lips, his tone assured and ruthless. "By then, the funding will have landed, my CEO seat will be secure, and even if she throws a fit, she won't be able to strip my control. Just give me three more weeks, okay?"
A sea breeze swept through the courtyard, but I felt as though I'd plunged into a frozen abyss.
The pain of the miscarriage seemed to tear through my lower abdomen again along the seams of memory. But I didn't move. I only bit down hard on my lower lip until a sharp, metallic taste flooded my mouth.
I had known, on some level, that cracks had long since formed in our marriage — years of entangled interests and growing distance. Yet I had clung to the absurd fantasy that if I just held on one more time, the man who once loved me would come back.
I thought my retreat would earn his empathy. Instead, the grief of losing my child had become a chip he could play, and my unconditional trust had become the stepping stone to preserve his power and wealth.
No confrontation. No storming in to slap their faces.
Like a ghost, I retraced my steps in silence and slipped out of the club as though I had never been there.
Sitting in my car, I looked at the woman in the rearview mirror — face drained of color, eyes rimmed red.
I realized, with sudden clarity, that what I truly needed to let go of was not this man, but the cowardly version of myself who had surrendered her identity, again and again, to sustain a family.
That wasn't me.
Night fell. Nolan pushed open the bedroom door, carrying the weight of a long day.
He walked to the bed, pulled me into his arms with practiced ease, rested his chin on top of my head, and murmured with concern: "Feeling any better today? I've been thinking about you all day."
I pressed my face obediently against his chest, closed my eyes, and smiled. "Much better, Nolan. You've given me so much strength."
I felt his shoulders relax instantly.
"Nolan, I've been doing a lot of thinking today." I lifted my head to meet his "tender" gaze. "If we're truly going to start over, I can't keep drowning in grief and leaving you alone under all that corporate pressure. I want to find my footing again. Maybe starting tomorrow, I could take a look at the group's recent operations — catch up on some of the brand initiatives."
Nolan's eyes lit up.
Clearly, he believed his performance of devotion had won me over completely.
My renewed interest in the business meant I was ready to signal my support to the board at the upcoming vote.
"Of course, darling! I'm so glad to hear you say that." He kissed my forehead excitedly, as though I were a lost treasure he'd just recovered. "First thing tomorrow, I'll have my assistant send department briefings to the house. You can look at whatever you want. But take your time — don't exhaust yourself."
"I'll go slowly," I said softly, smoothing a wrinkle in his shirt.
All those dirty ledgers you think you've hidden so well. The luxury bills you've been paying for your mistress. The loyal employees you've forced out behind my back…
Yes. I'm going to dig them up. Every. Last. One.
Late that night, Nolan hummed a tune on his way into the bathroom. The sound of running water soon followed.
I rose from the bed and walked into his dressing room.
In the tray on the walnut vanity lay a beautifully crafted, navy-blue invitation embossed in gold.
It bore the logo of our first flagship hotel in Charleston — the centerpiece of next month's tenth-anniversary gala, which also happened to fall on Nolan's fortieth birthday.
I picked up the invitation, my fingertip gliding over the cold gold lettering.
"I'm going to prepare a real birthday surprise for you, Nolan."
"One that you — and the entire board — will remember for the rest of your lives."

The Rejected Luna’s Rise
Luna Ariana Volkstane slid the formal rejection request across the table. "Let's end this bond. It's better for you, me, and your first love."
He just smirked. "You want me to reject you? You think you can break our bond that easily?"
So she did. Ariana cut ties with him completely, poured herself into her career, and rose to global fame as a legendary healer, her knowledge of rare herbs, wolf anatomy, and ancient magic sought after across continents.

A powerful pack leader vowed, "I'll be there with you the day you break the bond." A legendary wolf attorney promised, "I'll handle your rejection case with the pack council myself."
Ariana just rubbed her temples. It's not that she didn't want the split, she wanted it more than anything, it's just that the Alpha she was mated to refused to let go.
Finally, she announced, "Whoever can officially get me rejected, I'll put you at the head table of my bond-breaking celebration."
Not long after, Alpha Damian was served the official rejection request right in the middle of an emergency pack council meeting. That same afternoon, he was attacked by rogues at the gates of his own territory.
When Ariana showed up at the pack infirmary with healing herbs, she repeated calmly, "Let's sever the mate bond. It's better for you, me, and everyone else."
But the cold, untouchable Alpha pulled her into his arms, his eyes blood-red with fury. "You want me to reject you? Over my dead body."
