But by our third year of marriage, it seemed like Zachary was actually starting to fall for me.
He'd make me breakfast, sweet-talk me out of bed, and kiss me when I pouted.

Zachary shot them a cold glare and said slowly. "Don't fucking disgust me."
With a cigarette dangling from his lips, leaning on my shoulder, he added. "Anyone who pisses off my wife can shut the hell up and get out."
Everyone laughed, calling me Mrs. Adams over and over, saying how lucky I was that Zachary loved me so much.
No one knew that if Nicole hadn't suddenly shown up, Zachary wouldn't have come today at all.
Nicole glared at me, biting her lip hard, fighting back tears.
The guy who'd been forcing her to drink slid his hand onto her shoulder and gave it a rub.
He asked her. "What now? Looks like Mr. Adams doesn't want you anymore."
"But hey, it's cool. He doesn't want you, but I do."
"If you're willing to strip down and make me happy in bed, I'll toss you some pocket money. How about it?"
Zachary crushed his cigarette in his fist, his face turning to ice as anger boiled inside him.
He still pitied her.
Nicole held back her tears and looked up at Zachary.
She said softly. "I won't do it."
"In this life, I only love one person. Even if he doesn't want me anymore, I won't let anyone else touch me."
Zachary suddenly squeezed my hand so hard it hurt.
The guy felt embarrassed, laughed it off, and cursed at Nicole for being pathetic.
"Who do you think you are, some pure little virgin? Fuck, I'm offering you a chance and you're blowing it. Fine, I'm taking you tonight whether you like it or not!"
He grabbed Nicole and started dragging her out. She'd had too much to drink and slumped against him, weakly struggling.
Zachary's gaze was glued to Nicole.
I could see he was ready to murder for her.
Just as Nicole was about to be pulled out the door, Zachary finally dropped the act.
He charged forward in a few strides and kicked the guy holding her to the ground.
He pinned him down and started pounding him.
Eyes bloodshot, he snarled. "If you fucking touch Nicole again, I'll cut off your filthy hands!"
The room erupted into chaos.
Someone was recording. I quickly grabbed Zachary's sleeve, trying to pull him back.
He whipped around and snapped at me. "Who the hell are you to tell me what to do?"
I froze and slowly let go.
Nicole rushed over and threw her arms around him, sobbing. "Zachary, don't fight because of me. If you get hurt, it'll break my heart."
"I was so scared just now that you really didn't want me anymore..."
Zachary didn't push her away.
He held her close, shielding her protectively.
With everyone watching, he walked out with Nicole in his arms—and left me standing there alone.
