Introduction

I sat alone at our engagement dinner, having waited for eight long hours.

When my phone finally buzzed, Jasper sounded rushed.

"Lira? I'm so sorry. Things went sideways on my end. Your parents didn't stick around, did they?"

I stared at the melted ice in the champagne bucket.

"No," I said, my voice hollow.

He sighed. "Let's push it to next week, alright? I'll call your parents tomorrow and explain."

He hung up before I could answer.

Seconds later, an Instagram story from a mutual friend lit up my screen: [Elara's 25th! 25 gifts for our girl!]

I watched the video flash through designer bags, Cartier bracelets, and Porsche keys.

Then came the grand finale: Jasper striding across a tarmac in Aspen. The caption read: [Gift #25: The man himself!]

While I waited in an empty banquet hall, my fiancé had flown two states away for his foster sister's birthday.

Then, an iMessage from Elara popped up: [Jasper just can't say no to me. Are you sure you want to tie yourself to a man who will always put you second?]

I didn't cry, and I didn't demand an explanation. Ten years of loving Jasper Boone finally snapped.

I opened his text thread and typed a single response:

[Don't bother rescheduling. We're done.]

Chapter 1

I sat alone at our engagement dinner, having waited for eight long hours.

When my phone finally buzzed, Jasper sounded rushed.

"Lira? I'm so sorry. Things went sideways on my end. Your parents didn't stick around, did they?"

I stared at the melted ice in the champagne bucket.

We're done.]

...

"Dad, draw up the papers," I said thirty minutes later. "I'll agree to the merger. I'll marry Rhys Thorne."

"Smart girl." My father's exhale was thick with pragmatic relief. "In business and in love, Lira, you have to know when to cut your losses."

After I hung up, I went through the motions of a normal night, tossing a simple kale and quinoa salad.

The mundane rhythm grounded me as the remnants of my decade-long relationship burned to ash.

I was just plating the food when the front door clicked open.

Jasper strode into the foyer. In his hand was a wrapped bouquet of white lisianthus—my favorite.

"Told the driver to make a detour for these," he said.

He flashed that rogue, lopsided smirk that usually made my heart stutter. He looked masculine, radiating the raw charisma of a man who saved lives and conquered boardrooms with equal ease.

"Don't be mad, babe."

Normally, I'd abandon my dinner, take the flowers, and bury my face in his jacket. Tonight, I just picked up my fork.

His smirk faltered slightly.

"Still icing me out? Look, I'll have the florist send fresh arrangements to your gallery every day for a week. Deal?"

I walked past him toward the hallway. "There's no need."

Jasper shadowed me, catching my elbow. His tone dropped into the placating, soothing cadence.

"Come on, Lira. I know ghosting the engagement dinner was a massive screw-up. But I apologized, didn't I? You know how unpredictable the unit is. I was on standby—"

"Your failure to show up had nothing to do with a rescue op," I cut in, pulling my arm from his grip.

My voice was dead calm. "You flew to Aspen for Elara's birthday."

He froze. His dark eyes dodged mine for a fraction of a second.

"Lira, you know that... she was having a hard time..."

"This isn't an isolated incident, Jasper," I interrupted. "It's a decade-long pattern."

On my twenty-second birthday, he had taken Elara stargazing in Joshua Tree because she was "feeling anxious."

On our five-year anniversary, they were photographed sharing a Michelin-starred dinner in Napa.

And for the last five Valentine's Days, he had ditched me to charter a yacht in Miami—just so she could watch the fireworks over the water.

The air between us turned frigid. I took a slow breath, finally letting the exhaustion seep into my bones.

"You knew exactly what she was doing tonight. You knew it was a play, and you went anyway. I stood in that restaurant for eight hours, waiting like an abandoned prop in my own life."

My throat tightened, but I refused to give him the satisfaction of my tears.

Jasper's jaw clenched. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a tiny velvet pouch.

"Lira, you're in your head about this. It was just a birthday. Here, I picked this up just for you while I was out."

He pressed the bag into my hand. Inside was a flimsy, uninspired silver chain.

I recognized it instantly. It was a complimentary VIP trinket—a freebie a luxury boutique throws in when a client drops fifty grand on a bespoke handbag.

It was the leftover accessory paired with one of Elara's twenty-five gifts.

A vein throbbed at my temple. It took every ounce of my old-money restraint not to throw the cheap metal directly into his face.

This was the twisted foundation of our reality.

The wealthy Shay family had taken Jasper in when he was an orphaned, reckless teenager. They gave him a home, funded his Ivy League education, and bankrolled his first commercial assets.

When we first started dating, Jasper swore he owed the Shays his life. He promised to protect and provide for Elara forever.

I had accepted it then, mistaking his trauma-bonded guilt for honor.

But instead, his gratitude had become a weapon. Every time he humiliated me to cater to Elara's bottomless need for attention, he brushed it off.

Whenever I begged him to set boundaries, he'd laugh and say, "She's just a kid, Lira. She hasn't figured out what romantic love is yet."

I stared at the necklace in my palm, then looked up at the man I had loved for ten years.

Elara might not know the difference, but looking at the careless expectation in Jasper's eyes, a far more devastating question hit me.

What about him?

Did he even know what love was?

My BFF sent the hot stranger a voice note...
Of me saying I want to climb him like a tree.
And he just. Texted. Back.

It's the dog's fault, really.
If this untrained Great Dane I'm walking had any manners at all, I never would've ended up here:
With my leash wrapped around the most gorgeous man I've ever seen.

Lucky for me, the guy is a good sport about it.
(Although his joke that “Dogs take after their owners” hits a little too close to home when Rufus starts humping his leg.)
He leaves me with his business card and a smile that makes my knees weak.

I'm still pinching myself as me and the bestie resume our walk.
“Methinks you had a little crush on him,” she accuses.
Not thinking and a little flustered by the whole experience, I reply, “I’d wrap my legs around his waist tighter than that leash.”

THAT'S when she reveals that she'd been recording my response.
THAT'S when she gives me the most devilish grin I've ever seen and says, “You're welcome.”
And THAT'S when she hands me my phone and reveals...

She sent the recording to him.

My heart is in my throat as those three little dots appear…
Then a text.
“PROVE IT.”
