Introduction

A kingdom cursed. A dangerous pact. One impossible choice.
Mira Ashworth doesn't steal from princes on purpose. She steals from whoever's cargo pays best — and on the night she boards the wrong ship in the middle of a storm, that happens to be Kael Vaunt: exiled heir to the Ashfall throne, cursed by his own cousin to turn slowly, agonizingly to stone.
She wants nothing to do with royal politics. She wants her brother's crushing debt paid off, and to disappear back into the smuggler's life she knows. Kael offers her exactly that; in exchange for one thing: her knowledge of the only waters that can get him home alive.
But home means a cousin who stole his crown and left him for dead. It means an oath-bond neither of them can undo once it's sealed; blood, vow, and fate, tangled together whether they want it or not. And as the deadline of the next blood moon closes in, Mira finds herself risking far more than a debt: her freedom, her crew, and a heart she swore she'd never hand over to anyone let alone a dying prince with a knife-edge smile and a kingdom's worth of enemies.
The curse is only the beginning. The throne is only the start. And the bond between them may be the one bargain neither of them can survive breaking.

Chapter 1

The trick to running the Salt Line at night wasn't speed. It was patience—the kind Mira Ashworth's father used to say separated the smugglers who died rich from the smugglers who died young. He'd managed to do neither himself, a fact that rather undercut the lesson every time she repeated it to Bram, usually just before doing something that tested the theory's limits.

"Slower," she murmured, one hand braced against the Marlin's Luck's rail as she watched the dark water for the pale seam of foam that marked a reef shelf lurking just beneath the surface.

Bram stood at the wheel wearing the expression of a man who desperately wanted to argue but knew better than to say so aloud. His jaw still worked as though chewing on the protest.

"Storm's pushing the patrol boats toward Ferrow Point," Mira continued. "We wait, we drift past their blind side. We rush, and we announce ourselves to every customs skiff between here and the Hollow."

"We wait too long, we miss the tide window at the Hollow," Bram countered. "Then we're stranded in open water until dawn with a hold full of contraband and a very unhappy Voss waiting on the other end."

Even so, he eased the wheel a fraction. In four years of running cargo together, he'd never once been right when he doubted her judgment on the water—a fact she reminded him of with irritating consistency.

"We've got three hours before the tide turns," she said. "We have time."

"You always say that."

"I'm always right."

"You're right often," Bram muttered.

For Bram, that was practically surrender, and Mira allowed herself a small smile into the darkness where he couldn't see it.

The Marlin's Luck rode low and silent, her running lights extinguished and her sails reefed tight against a wind that smelled of a storm still deciding whether to become something worse. Around them, the Salt Line churned black and restless, the narrow stretch of water dividing the mainland from the Ashfall Court's outer islands. It was a passage littered with reefs, wrecks, and enough bad history that most captains refused to sail it even in daylight, let alone in the uneasy hours before a storm broke, when the swells moved unpredictably and the wind couldn't decide which way it wanted to drive a ship.

Mira had grown up on those waters. Her father had taught her to read the strait long before he'd taught her to read words—to know which silences promised calm and which meant the sea was gathering itself to strike, which currents raced unseen beneath deceptively smooth water, and which of the dozen unmarked coves along the mainland coast could hide a boat from a patrol skiff instead of trapping it. She had buried him three years earlier in a grave overlooking the water he had loved more than most people, yet she still caught herself falling into his old calculations without thinking, as though some part of him continued navigating beside her.

Tonight, the sea was gathering itself to bite.

"There," she said quietly, pointing toward a smear of deeper darkness on the horizon.

As they closed the distance, it resolved into the low silhouette of a merchant vessel sailing without lights of its own. Ashfall-built, by the look of her—narrow, fast, designed for the reef-choked northern passages, with a hull riding suspiciously high for a cargo ship. Either she was carrying very little, or what she carried was small, dense, and worth a fortune.

Exactly the sort of cargo Renner Voss paid triple for and never asked too many questions about.

"That's not on the manifest Voss gave us," Bram said, instinctively lowering his voice even though no sound could possibly carry that far across open water.

Old habits, like old tides, were hard to break.

"Voss's manifests are wrong half the time. He gets his information secondhand from harbor gossips who've never set foot past Ferrow Point." Mira was already moving toward the grapple lines, an energy she hadn't felt all week sparking through her hands—the familiar electric focus that always came before a job, when the plan was still clean, untested, and every outcome still felt possible. "We take a look. If it's not worth the risk, we back off."

"You always say that. You never back off."

"I back off constantly. You just don't remember the times because nothing happened, which is rather the point of backing off successfully."

Bram laughed, short and disbelieving, but brought the Marlin's Luck around anyway, threading the gap between two rock spurs with the quiet confidence that came from having done it a hundred times before. The engine cut to nothing, and the ship glided on the wind and the last of its forward momentum, keeping their approach silent. Mira climbed onto the rail with the grapple line coiled over her shoulder and her father's old boarding knife strapped to her thigh, the leather sheath worn soft and dark from years of her hand finding it in the dark exactly like this.

She thought, briefly and without much sentiment, of Tomas—asleep, she hoped, in the room above Halloway's Tavern, where he'd been staying since the debt collectors had begun visiting their old place too regularly for comfort. Sixteen years old and already carrying a burden that should have belonged to grown men who knew better than to run cargo for Renner Voss without reading the terms twice. She'd been the one to explain those terms after the fact, when it was already too late to undo the signature, and she'd spent every night since running the Salt Line trying to buy that signature back one crate at a time.

The other ship loomed larger as they closed—bigger than she'd first judged and better kept, its black hull polished smooth beneath a thin skin of salt spray, the kind of vessel someone spent real money maintaining while still running dark through smuggler's waters. That should have told her something. Later, lying awake replaying the night, she would admit it had, and that she simply hadn't wanted to heed the warning. Tomas's debt sat in her chest like a stone she couldn't put down, and a payday was a payday. Long ago, she'd learned not to let caution cost her money she couldn't afford to leave on the water.

The grapple caught cleanly on the second throw, biting into the rail with a soft thud she felt more than heard over the wind. Mira climbed the line hand over hand, her boots finding the hull's seams with the ease of long practice, her muscles burning pleasantly with the familiar work. She dropped soundlessly onto the deck, into darkness and the smell of banked coal smoke and something else beneath it—something like the air before lightning struck, sharp, metallic, and wrong in a way she couldn't yet name, a wrongness that raised the fine hairs on her arms before her mind caught up to why.

She crouched low against the rail, counting heartbeats as she listened. No footsteps on deck. No watch calling out. Either this ship ran with a criminally thin crew, or its crew had better reasons than most to stay quiet and unseen. Mira found herself hoping, with the optimism of someone who badly needed the night to go well, that it was simply the former.

The hold hatch was unlocked. That, too, should have told her something. No cargo worth triple price was left unbarred on these waters, not with wreckers, rival crews, and the Crown's own patrols all hunting for an easy prize. But the coal-smoke smell was fainter here, and beneath the hatch she could just make out rows of neatly stacked crates. Greed did to caution what it always did: it quietly strangled it.

She was three crates deep, easing her knife beneath the lid of one stamped with the Ashfall royal seal, when her hands stilled. Royal cargo on a dark-running merchant ship this far from the palace ports meant either a very embarrassing piece of smuggling by someone powerful enough to require such discretion or something she wanted no part of touching. Every instinct her father had drilled into her screamed for her to reseal the crate and leave. Instead, the hold door above her swung open without a sound, and a voice from the darkness said conversationally, in a tone suggesting he'd been standing there watching her work for some time,

"You have extraordinarily poor timing."

Mira's knife was up before she'd finished turning, her heart slamming, every nerve in her body alive at once. The figure in the doorway didn't flinch or reach for a weapon. He simply stood there, the lamplight from the corridor behind him carving his silhouette into something tall, still, and entirely too calm for a man staring down the edge of a smuggler's blade in his own cargo hold.

"Poor timing for who?" Mira said, proud of how level her voice sounded despite her racing pulse. "You, standing between me and the door? Or me, apparently robbing a ship whose owner doesn't know how to stay dead quiet in his own hold?”

"Mine, I think."

He stepped forward into the light spilling through the deck hatch, unhurried in a way that made her skin crawl even more than if he'd rushed her. Men who moved like that either had nothing to fear or knew something she didn't, and Mira had learned to distrust both in equal measure. He was tall and dark-haired, with a face that belonged on a coin rather than a smuggler's night run, all clean lines and deliberate stillness, and eyes the color of banked coals, faintly, impossibly orange at their centers, as though something still burned beneath the surface long after the fire should have died.

"I was rather hoping to reach Ashfall waters without incident tonight," he said. "And now here you are. An incident, uninvited and armed, three crates into my hold."

"You're bleeding," Mira said, because she'd finally identified the wrongness in the air—the metallic, lightning-sharp scent that had raised her hackles the moment she'd stepped onto the deck. It came from him, from his right hand, held slightly away from his body in a posture that now looked less like caution than practiced concealment. From the second knuckle down, his fingers had taken on the color and texture of pale gray stone, the transition unnervingly smooth, like something from the old tales her grandmother had used to frighten her as a child.

Something that might have been a smile touched his face but never reached his ember-bright eyes, which remained watchful and assessing even as his mouth curved.

"An old injury," he said. "It doesn't behave like most."

"That's not an injury." Mira's grip tightened on her knife, more from instinct than any real belief it would help against whatever she was looking at. "That's a curse. I've seen the old carvings in the temple ruins beyond Ferrow Point—stone hands, stone hearts, whole bodies turned to rock in stories about mages who broke their oaths. That's not a story. It's real, and it's on your arm."

"Astute," he said, and something flickered behind his calm—not quite surprise, more like reluctant respect. "And unfortunate for you, because it means you've stumbled onto the one ship on the Salt Line tonight that you should have left alone."

Mira's mind was already running through the calculations her father had taught her, fast and cold, the way it always did when a job turned sideways. A cargo hold. One exit, currently blocked. A cursed stranger who hadn't drawn a weapon but hadn't given ground either. And somewhere on the ship, she hoped, Bram, still free and waiting with the boarding line. If she called out now, she'd bring the whole crew down on both of them. If she stayed silent, she was betting everything on getting past one man.

"Here's what's going to happen," she said with far more confidence than she felt, chin raised and knife steady. "You're going to let me walk out of here with whatever's in that crate, and I'm going to forget I ever saw a royal seal or a stone hand tonight. Simple trade. Nobody has to make this complicated."

The stranger tilted his head, studying her with an expression she couldn't read. For one long moment, the only sounds in the hold were the storm gathering strength outside, the hull creaking with the swell, and the steady hammering of her own pulse.

"No," he said almost gently, his voice carrying none of the threat she'd expected and all the more danger for its restraint. "I don't think that's what's going to happen at all."

Then the deck lanterns above them guttered out all at once, as though something unseen had reached up and pinched every flame aboard the ship between its fingers, and Mi

ra understood, far too late, exactly how much trouble she'd boarded this vessel to find.

One Night. One Mistake. One Lifetime of Consequences.

I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.

My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.

But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.

In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.

"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.

"Who the fuck is Jason?"

My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.

I ran away for my life!

But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!

They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.

Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”

There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.
