Chapter 1
The Miscarriage
ELARA'S POV
Oh God! Oh God! Not again please. This couldn't be happening to me again.
A searing pain ripped through my abdomen and I let out another scream. I could feel the warm blood trickling down my legs.
I was losing my baby. Again.
“Help!” I cried out, tears streaming down my cheeks. “Somebody help me,. I'm losing my baby…”
But my pleas faded into the void, a cruel reminder that I was alone. Have been alone.
“Arrrghhhh… Oh God….” I sobbed, struggling to move.
My vision blurred as I dragged myself across the hardwood floor, leaving a crimson trail behind me. My knees buckled, my body shaking violently. I reached for the nightstand, fumbling for my phone with slippery, blood-stained fingers.
“Come on,” I whispered, dialing Matt’s number. “Please, please pick up baby, please…”
It rang once. Twice. Then went straight to voicemail.
I tried again. And again.
Nothing.
“Matt…” My voice broke on his name. “Please answer…”
But he didn’t.
Of course he didn’t.
He hadn’t been home in weeks, hadn’t called, hadn’t cared. And yet, here I was, still calling him, still hoping. Like the pathetic fool I was.
When the pain became unbearable, I tried the only other person I could think of. Vanessa. My best friend.
Thankfully, she answered immediately.
“N-Nesssa….” My lips quivered as he lr name rolled off my lips. “Help me…”
“Elara!” Her tone was immediately clouded with worry. “What's wrong? What happened?”
“Vanessa…” I could barely get the words out. “I’m… I’m bleeding. The baby… I think I’m losing the baby.”
There was a pause. Then her voice came out shaking, panicked. “Stay where you are. You’re home, right? I’m coming. Just… just hold on, okay?”
Then the line went dead.
I tried to breathe through the pain, clutching my belly as if holding it tight enough could keep the baby safe. But the pain only grew, and the room began to spin. Minutes felt like hours. My skin turned clammy, and my breaths came shallow and ragged.
By the time I heard the sound of a car pulling into the driveway, I was crawling toward the front door, my vision blurring at the edges. I managed to reach the threshold, collapsing against it.
At that moment, the door burst open.
“Vanessa…” I whispered weakly. My heart stopped for a second and my eyes widened when I saw who was standing behind her.
Matt. My Matt.
For a second, I blinked rapidly , thinking I was hallucinating. My husband, the man who couldn’t even answer his phone, was standing there beside my best friend.
Vanessa’s face twisted in panic as she rushed toward me. “Oh my God, Elara! What the hell… we need to get her to a hospital, now!”
Matt, however, didn’t move. His eyes remained fixed on me. There was no iota of concern in them or even any sense of urgency. It was just disgust. Pure unadulterated disdain.
He stepped inside, his shoes squelching against the blood on the floor. “Jesus, Elara,” he muttered in disgust. “You’ve messed up the entire living room. Who the hell is going to clean all this up?”
I blinked, thinking I must have misheard him.
“Matt!” Vanessa snapped. “Are you serious right now? She’s bleeding out and all you care about is the damn living room?!”
He scoffed, but when Vanessa shot him a deadly glare, he finally bent down, grabbed my arm roughly, and hauled me up. “Fine. But you’re paying for the carpet cleaning.”
I let out a low wince as his nails dug I to my skin but he didn't even care. Black dots began to appear in my vision and the next second, everything went black.
When I woke up, the pain was duller but i felt light inside. Empty. Like a part of me was missing. My stomach twisted in panic.
I turned my head and saw Matt pacing at the foot of the bed, his jaw tight, eyes burning with restrained fury. Vanessa was standing in the corner, looking pale and shaken.
The doctor’s expression was somber as he stepped closer.
“Mrs. Rayne,” he began softly, “I’m afraid there’s been a complication. You suffered a miscarriage.”
My heart stopped. The words didn’t seem real. The very thing I dreaded had come to reality. Again.
“No…” I whispered. “No, no, no…”
Matt let out a low, bitter laugh. “Of course. A miscarriage again. It's always the same with you ”
“Mr. Rayne,” the doctor warned gently, “please….”
“Don’t ‘please’ me!” he exploded. “This is the eighth one, doctor! Eighth miscarriage in three years! Tell me, what is she even good for?”
I flinched as his words sliced through me like a knife. Tears burned my eyes, filling it to the brim.
Matt turned his fury back to me, his voice dripping venom. “You can’t even carry a baby. What use are you, Elara? You’ve failed me every single time! Are you not even tired of disappointing me?”
“Mr. Rayne!” the doctor interrupted firmly. “That’s enough.”
Matt glared at him but said nothing.
The doctor turned to me, his voice soft but very grave which made my chest feel tighter. It was like the worst was yet to come.
“Miss Elara… during the procedure, there were severe complications. The bleeding wouldn’t stop. We had to perform an emergency surgery to save your life.”
I stared at him, numb, confused. “What… what do you mean?”
He took a deep breath. “We had to remove your uterus. I’m so sorry, Mrs. Rayne. You won’t be able to conceive again.”
In that moment, my entire world came crashing down. My chest felt so tight that I couldn't even breathe.
For a moment, all I could hear was the sound of my own heart breaking.
Matt’s face went red with rage. “You what?” he shouted at the doctor. “Why the hell didn’t you save the baby instead?!”
“Because your wife would have died,” the doctor said sharply, irritated.
But Matt wasn’t listening. He ran a hand through his hair, muttering curses under his breath before turning to me. His eyes were cold, lifeless and full of hate.
“You’re unbelievable,” he hissed. “First you kill all our babies, and now this? You lost your womb? What am I supposed to do with you now, huh?”
“Matt please…” my voice broke as the words tumbled out.
“I can’t even look at you!” He spat.
Then he turned and stormed out, slamming the door so hard the walls felt like they would crumble.
I stared at the empty doorway, my heart finally collapsing in on itself.
Then the tears came pouring down. Heavy, unrelenting, choking.

By dawn they'd branded me "cursed": cast out by my pack, abandoned by family, stripped of my nature. My father didn't defend me—he sent me to a forsaken island where wolfless outcasts were forged into weapons, forced to kill each other until only one could leave.
On that island I learned the darkest edges of humanity and how to bury terror in bone. Countless times I wanted to surrender—dive into the waves and never surface—but the accusing faces that haunted my dreams pushed me back toward something colder than survival: revenge. I escaped, and for three years I hid among humans, collecting secrets, learning to move like a shadow, sharpening patience into precision—becoming a blade.
Then, under a full moon, I touched a bleeding stranger—and my wolf returned with a violence that made me whole. Who was he? Why could he wake what I'd thought dead?
One thing I know: now is the time.
I have waited three years for this. I will make everyone who destroyed me pay—and take back everything that was stolen from me.

Daniel. The brother I was warned about. The one who made Nicholas look like a choir boy.
He leaned against the wall, watching my world implode.
My pulse thundered. "What?"
"You heard me." His eyes burned into mine. "Marry me, Emma."
But as I stared into those magnetic eyes, I realized something terrifying:
I wanted to say yes to him.
Game on.
