Introduction

When my year-end bonus came in, I bought a pair of engraved matching bracelets for the man I'd been with for eight years and had them shipped to his office.
The tracking said delivered. He waited a full day before sending me a voice message, asking if I'd bought him a gift.
I said no, and asked if someone had sent him something. He brushed it off. Said he'd ask around.
When I pushed, he said it was a pair of running shoes from a coworker, and he'd already sent them back.
That night he kept his phone on him. He even took it to bed.
Once he was asleep, I unlocked it with his finger.
His old Messenger chats had all been cleared. I searched one word: gift.
The messages came right up. The other person was Mia Novak. He called her "baby."
I tapped her profile picture. It was a wedding photo.
The groom was Nathan Boyd, the man I'd been with for eight years.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

"Did you get me a gift?"

Nathan sounded hesitant, like he wanted to ask and was afraid of the answer.

I set my phone face down on the table and looked out the window for two seconds. Then I held down the mic button and kept my voice lazy, like we were talking about the weather. "Nope. Why? Did someone send you something?"

A beat of silence. Then a dry laugh. "Probably a coworker. I'll ask around."

"Ask around?" I repeated. "Ask who?"

He mumbled something like "Tell you later," and the message cut off.

I sat by the window. Three days ago I'd boxed up those engraved bracelets, written his office address on the label, and sent them off. Tracking showed them delivered last night. He hadn't said a word.

A coworker? Who sends a coworker a matching set?

At seven-thirty, the lock clicked.

Nathan took off his shoes, hung up his coat, washed his hands. Same as always. He was even humming the same tune. I sat at the dining table peeling a clementine and watched him pour a glass of water and drink half of it in one go.

"So where are the shoes?" I said. "Let me see."

He froze, the glass halfway down. "What shoes?"

"The ones from your voice message."

"Oh, right." He dragged it out and set the glass in the sink. "Those. They were a coworker's. Somebody put my name and number on the label. I already sent them back."

Then he grabbed the remote, turned on the TV, and cranked the volume loud enough to drown out talking. "I'm going to shower. We'll talk after."

The hallway was short. As he walked down it, his right hand was gripping his phone so hard his knuckles went white.

All night, that phone never left his side. It lay face down on his pillow with a privacy screen on it. From my side of the bed, it was just a black rectangle.

I closed my eyes and waited.

The AC hummed. He rolled over twice. Finally his breathing slowed and a soft snore crept in.

I opened my eyes, listened for ten seconds, then reached under his pillow and slid the phone out.

Fingerprint unlock. I'd held that hand under the covers more times than I could count. I knew it better than my own.

I didn't go for the photos or the contacts. I swiped up to see what he'd used recently. Food delivery, maps, banking, texts. All normal. Then, at the very end, an icon I'd assumed he deleted years ago.

I opened it. Every chat was gone.

But that app had a quirk: clearing a chat didn't delete the history.

I typed four letters into the search bar.

The messages popped up. The newest was from this morning.

Him: "Baby, your gift came!"

Her: "What gift?"

Him: "A pair of matching bracelets."

Her: "What bracelets? What are you talking about?"

Then a long gap. He must have figured it out. The bracelets weren't from her.

So he switched gears. "Got a bonus when the project wrapped. Bought us a pair of bracelets. Consider them from me."

She replied in seconds. "Thank you, hubby!!" followed by a sticker of a grinning cartoon cat.

My fingertips went cold. I scrolled back further, then backed out to the chat list and tapped her profile picture.

A wedding photo.

I recognized him instantly. He was wearing the charcoal suit I'd helped him pick out, standing tall, smiling that honest, harmless smile, his arm around the woman next to him. The two of them stood in a sea of white flowers.

I put the phone back exactly where it had been, face down, not an inch off. Then I lay back down on my half of the bed and stared at the ceiling until morning.

One thought kept circling. If those bracelets had landed on his desk and he'd taken them for her gift, how had he planned to explain that to me?

Or maybe, as far as he was concerned, I'd never needed explaining. I was just someone he could put away whenever it suited him.

Near dawn, I turned over and stared at his back, and something came to me. In eight years, he had never once introduced me to his parents.

"My parents keep pushing me." He used to say it so easily. It turned out he'd never been saying it about me.
