Introduction
He donates his entire paycheck to the community every month and says to the camera with tears in his eyes: "When your neighbors are freezing, you can't just worry about whether there's enough money in your own pocket. You have to show some heart."
But where the camera can't see —
A gas company shutoff notice sits on the kitchen table. His mother's insulin will run out in three days. Our six-year-old son is about to spend the night in a house that's fifteen below zero.
For eight years. Every time he opened his wallet for the world, I was the one crawling through ductwork at 2 a.m., quietly patching every hole with my overtime pay.
He bought his reputation with my sweat and blood. He decorated his image with his parents' illnesses. He crowdfunded forty-two thousand dollars using footage of our son shivering in the cold.
Tonight, he's going on the local evening news to brand me as "the cold-blooded woman who abandoned her family."
What he doesn't know is that I have far more evidence than he can imagine.
For instance — his own words: "Dad can skip a few weeks of rehab — it's not gonna kill him. But this weekend's event could get me on the news."
You want to be on the news, Caleb?
As you wish.
Chapter 1
I stood on the icy rooftop of a commercial high-rise in downtown Pittsburgh, staring in frustration at the seized actuator on an aging boiler valve.
My knuckles were frozen red, stained with shadowy smears of grease.
In fifteen-below-zero cold, it had taken me a full three hours to bypass the faulty sensors and force the building's heating loop back online.
As a frontline controls technician, I didn't just know building automation — I could diagnose what was wrong with a multimillion-dollar HVAC system just by listening to the hum of the compressor.
But there were some things even I couldn't fix.
I quietly pushed those tangled thoughts out of my head.
I drove my beat-up Ford pickup into the driveway.
I pushed through the front door and was immediately blocked by a wall of cardboard boxes.
Fifty identical boxes containing high-end portable space heaters were stacked across the living room floor like bricks, shoving the worn-out couch into the corner.
Standing in the center of it all was my husband, Caleb.
He held his smartphone at a practiced low angle, his voice deliberate and clear.
He wore a beanie printed with a charity logo and an impossibly clean Carhartt jacket. He looked impeccable.
"Check it out, guys! Fifty units! Fifty families won't have to shiver through Pittsburgh's cold snap tonight," Caleb said to the camera, his eyes narrowing slightly, his expression a perfect blend of compassion and satisfaction. "I'm not gonna lie — this wiped out every penny I earned at the county library this month. I put my entire paycheck into the Winter Warmth Drive. Because when your neighbors are freezing, you can't just sit there counting the coins in your own pocket. You have to step up."
I ducked out of the camera's line of sight, pulled off my heavy work boots, and set them against the radiator.
The radiator barely had any warmth left. I walked into the kitchen, my socked feet meeting the linoleum with a sharp chill.
Right there, dead center on the scratched-up kitchen table, lay a single sheet of paper.
I didn't even need to read the fine print to know what it was.
The final disconnection notice from the gas company.
Past-due amount: $482.15. Service termination date: November 14th.
Tomorrow.
A familiar panic flared in my chest, but I pushed it down.
I opened the fridge to grab a bottle of water, and my eyes instinctively drifted to the butter compartment where my mother-in-law Diane's insulin was stored.
Ever since my father-in-law Frank's cardiac stent surgery had drained their meager retirement savings, the two of them had been living in our converted basement for three years.
I picked up the small insulin vial and held it up to the fridge light.
Three doses. Barely enough for three days.
"All right, fam, I'm gonna load these bad boys onto the bus," Caleb was saying from the living room. "Keep spreading the love. If you want to help fuel tonight's distribution run, hit the link on my page and drop a tip!"
"Caleb." I called out. My voice was flat. Tired.
The ring light clicked off. Caleb strode into the kitchen, his charismatic smile collapsing instantly into an expression of irritated inconvenience.
"I was recording the outro, Mara. Don't just yell at me in the middle of a livestream."
I held up the fluorescent-pink notice in my left hand and the insulin vial in my right.
"Your mother's insulin runs out in three days. The copay gap on her state Medicaid needs three hundred dollars. And we have less than twenty-four hours before the gas company shuts off our heat — during a freeze warning. You need to return at least ten of those heaters."
Caleb sighed and adopted a tone of supreme self-righteousness — like a saint forced to explain the meaning of love to a mortal. "I can't return them, Mara. I need the receipts to back up my charity credentials. Besides, I just told my followers I'm giving away fifty heaters tonight. You want me to look like a fraud?"
"I want our son to have heat tomorrow," I said, my voice low, my throat clenched tight as a torqued wrench. "You promised you'd use this month's paycheck to cover the gas bill. Now you're out there telling the internet you spent it on heaters for strangers?"
"Those 'strangers' live in low-income neighborhoods with drafty windows! We have double-pane glass and curtains!" Caleb hissed back, leaning in close, careful not to let his temper carry beyond the kitchen. "You only ever care about this house — about your own comfort, Mara. There's a world full of suffering out there, and all you want is for me to be a selfish little suburbanite."
As if summoned by the argument, the basement door creaked open.
Diane climbed the stairs in a thick flannel bathrobe, leaning heavily on the railing. Frank followed close behind.
"Are you two fighting?" Diane said, her gaze traveling between me and her son before softening warmly on Caleb. "Everything okay? Didn't you finish your video, sweetheart?"
"I told Caleb we need to return some of the heaters to cover your insulin and the gas bill." I said it bluntly. I was done playing this family's favorite game.
Staying alive mattered more than Caleb's reputation for goodness.
Diane waved a dismissive hand, pulling her robe tighter, utterly unconcerned. "Oh, Mara, don't give the boy a hard time. He's doing something kind. What he does for the community is so inspiring. I can stretch my doses — I'll just eat less this week."
"You cannot cut your own insulin dosage with Type 1 diabetes, Diane. You'll trigger an emergency." I shot back. The sheer absurdity of this situation made my temples throb.
I turned to Frank. "Your son is about to get the heat shut off on this entire house."
Frank stared at the floor and scratched his graying beard, unbothered.
"Well… at least he's helping people, Mara. We can bundle up for a few days. You shouldn't kill his passion. A wife tearing down her husband's charity work — that doesn't look good."
I looked at the three adults standing in my kitchen.
For eight years, this household had been having this exact insane conversation.
Caleb would keep performing for the public, bleeding our living expenses dry.
Then the consequences would arrive on schedule.
A mortgage teetering on default. An empty fridge. Or a medication supply cut off.
And me?
All I could do was quietly pick up back-to-back weekend shifts, crawl through dusty duct shafts, and use my sweat-earned money to patch the holes before the lights went out.
I used to believe that if I just waited a little longer, he'd understand that family comes first.
But staring at that disconnection notice, I finally understood.
It was useless.
He was buying his reputation with his wife's labor and his parents' suffering.
A soft patter of footsteps crossed the living room carpet.
Six-year-old Ollie stood in the doorway in his dinosaur pajamas, rubbing his eyes.
He clutched the iPad Caleb had bought him.
"Mommy?" Ollie's voice was small, full of confusion. "Why are you mad at Daddy? Don't you want to help the people who are cold?"
I let out a long, slow breath.
It was devastating to realize that Caleb wasn't just squandering our survival fund — he was brainwashing our son's sense of right and wrong, casting me as the selfish villain.
Caleb looked down at Ollie and gave a sad, knowing smile. He placed a hand gently on the boy's shoulder. "It's okay, buddy. Mommy just doesn't understand us. She doesn't get that helping people means making sacrifices."
In any of the past eight years, this would have been the moment I caved.
The moment I swallowed my anger, opened my banking app, and transferred the car-repair fund to the gas company. The moment I quietly called the pharmacy and paid Diane's insulin copay. The moment I resigned myself to cleaning up the mess.
But tonight, I didn't want to do any of it.
I walked to the kitchen table.
Ignoring everything.
I looked at my mother-in-law, who was gazing at her wonderful son as though beholding a saint. Then, finally, I looked at my husband, who was already straightening his jacket collar, preparing to step back onto his stage.
There was neither anger nor warmth in my voice. "Do whatever you want. I'm not covering for you anymore."
I walked past them and, passing through the doorway, pressed a light kiss onto Ollie's messy hair. "I love you, baby. Get back into bed."
Caleb watched me walk toward the hallway, and for the first time, a flash of genuine panic crossed his face.
"Wait — Mara! They're going to cut the gas the second the deadline hits tomorrow!"
"I know," I said without turning around. "You've got fifty heaters, don't you? Keep a few for yourselves."
I closed the bedroom door.
The kitchen fell into deathly silence.
I could picture Caleb staring at that disconnection notice. But his panic didn't last long — because outside the window, the camera was waiting for him.
I heard him stride back into the living room and go live again.
"Sorry about that, guys! Just had a little family moment to deal with," he beamed into the camera. "Now — let's get this bus loaded up and bring some warmth to the people who need it most tonight!"
In the darkness of the bedroom, my phone screen lit up. An automatic bank alert from our joint account popped onto the screen.
You have successfully transferred funds to the "Kindness on Wheels" account.

He was a beast inhabiting this mansion, inflicting inhuman torture on my poor soul. He had created a living hell for me, this pitiful girl, within his castle.
On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.
“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.
Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:
“Until you die!”
With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.
But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.
My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.
I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!

My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.
But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.
In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.
"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.
"Who the fuck is Jason?"
My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.
I ran away for my life!
But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!
They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.
