Chapter 1
Elsie'S POV
"Elsie!!!" My stepmother, Luna Gretel, thunderously yelled out my name, making my heart skip so fast. What could I have done again?
"Yes, Mother!!!" I shouted, making sure I was loud enough because there were many cases where I didn't shout my response for her to hear and got punished for not answering her.
I descended the stairs as fast as I could to answer her call. When I got to her, the fiery glare I saw in her eyes made me cower. Even without her uttering a word, I already did something wrong to offend her. But what was it?
“Mo- ther,” I stuttered. “You called me.”
Before I could know what was happening, her right palm had launched a fierce slap on my cheek.
“Ahh!!" I screamed out in pain. My hands clutched my cheeks tightly as I struggled to maintain my stand. The slap made my world spin. It had been more than twenty-four hours since I had my last meal. Not that I ate real food. It was simply bread.
“How many times do I need to remind you that I am not your mother? Your wretched mother is dead!" She fired at me. “I am not your Luna, address me with respect.”
“I… I am sorry, Luna," I said amidst the tears that were rolling down my cheeks. “But please you do not have to involve my late mom.”
She furrowed her gaze and looked so intently at me that I felt my soul was torn from me.
“Are you talking back to me?" She asked with a stern grin. "Are you trying to lecture me on what and what not to say?”
I could not utter a word. What was I to say to her in this situation? The Luna queen was fierce and wicked! She derived a lot of joy from seeing me suffer.
“Answer me!!" She pressed on. I needed a way to escape from this torture. If I were to keep mute, she would end up doing worse to me.
I fell on my knees and clasped my hands as if praying to her. “I am sorry!" I said loudly. "Please, gracious Luna, forgive me for speaking so foolishly."
She seemed to calm down after hearing my apology but a scoff escaped her mouth. “Get me water to drink."
Without wasting a split second, I scurried off like a tiny rabbit. I started living like an orphan from the age of five.
Growing up, I had been a princess, admired and loved by all. I was my father’s priceless jewel and my mother’s joy but it all ended after my mother died of a chronic illness and my father remarried, a requirement as the Alpha of the Pack.
Luna Gretel moved into the Pack with her sons and I believed we could form a good relationship as a family but my expectations were cut short after father died of a stroke. My stepbrothers, Tristan, Tyler and Topher began to torture me and whenever I would complain to Stepmother, she would take their sides and punish me for accusing her sons.
I was subjected to ill-treatment and stripped from being a princess to being a worker in the pack. They all trampled on me and considered me as just a weak and useless Omega.
It was worse when I had to deal with my triplet step brothers but since they left four years ago for their Alpha training, I had been able to breathe better.
However, this little life I had left was bound to be snuggled out of my lungs today, the boys were finally returning to the Pack. But on this same day, I would be turning eighteen, which meant I would find my mate and finally be free from this Pack palace.
“Elsie!” Queen Gretel yelled and I quickly began to head back to her with a tray in my hands. My heart would not stop beating but I just had to endure for a few more hours. The moon would be by night, and my mate would find me, then I will be free from them.
"Can't you walk faster?!" Her gaze would not leave me.
I was feeling drowsy. My legs were getting weak. After a lot of work and little sleep, I was losing my strength. Though I was walking, my eyelids flipped down for a split second. And that was it, the moment that riled up the atmosphere.
I missed my step and got myself flying in the air. The tray slipped from my hands and went crashing on the floor. The shattering sounds of the glass filled the air. But it didn't end there. With eyes dilated in fear, I collided head to head with the Luna where she sat.
"Ah!" I yelled in pain. My head felt like it was going to split into two parts. I couldn't even open my eyes.
But then, I felt a hand around my neck. It was strong. I opened my eyes. It was the Luna Queen. My heart sank into my stomach. I saw the horror in her eyes.
Before I could speak, she slammed me on the glass center table, shattering every bit of it with the force that came from my back.
I wanted to scream but there was no strength to do that. I was fading away. But she didn't stop.
"Get my whip!!!" She thundered.
As if someone was waiting for the moment, the whip was brought and she began to swing her hand, the whip creating marks wherever it landed. I was almost without life before she stopped.
"Get up!!" She growled at me.
Get yourself together, Elsie. It will be over soon.
I drew strength from the hope of being free from them and forced myself to stand.
"You clumsy orphan! You took after your clumsy parents! Now, get this mess cleaned up. And hey, make sure this palace is set before my boys return! Have I made—"
She didn't complete her next words. Instead, her face dissolved into a warm grin. Was she smiling at me? No way! I followed her gaze and slowly turned.
The moment I saw what she had seen, my legs became weak and I held onto the wall
for support. My worst nightmares were standing before me. The triplets!
