Outrun the Quarterback
Sofia Summers · Ongoing · 33.3k Words
Introduction
Then one bad fall turned her best race into the only thing anyone remembered.
Two years later, Riley is perfectly happy keeping her distance from the track—and from anyone who thinks they know how her comeback story is supposed to go. Then her school plays footage of her fall in front of the entire student body.
And Cole Mercer remembers what came before it.
Westbridge's star quarterback is confident, impossible to ignore, and, apparently, the same boy Riley knew years ago—the one who still remembers a nickname she'd almost forgotten and details about her she doesn't remember giving him.
When Riley and Cole are paired for a school sports event, old memories turn into new arguments, and arguments turn into something neither of them can dismiss as easily as they'd like.
But Riley is starting to find her way back to the track on her own terms. The last thing she needs is another person deciding what she wants, who she used to be, or where she's supposed to finish.
Cole may be used to calling the play.
This time, he'll have to keep up.
Chapter 1
Riley's POV
The announcement came ten minutes before the final bell, crackling through the overhead speaker.
"Attention Westbridge Wildcats—all students are required to report to the gymnasium immediately following the final bell for the Fall Sports Assembly. Attendance is mandatory. We repeat: mandatory."
Ms. Velez glanced at the clock, capped her marker, and abandoned whatever point she'd been making about unreliable narrators. The classroom collectively exhaled. Around me, people were already pulling out their phones, whispering about the football roster, about Homecoming, about Cole Mercer's completion percentage from the spring scrimmage that apparently some of these people had memorized.
I was drawing hurdles in the margin of my notebook. Not on purpose. My hand just did it—clean, evenly spaced, five in a row along the bottom of page forty-two. I didn't notice until Priya leaned over and added a tiny stick figure to the third one. Mid-fall, both legs sideways, arms reaching for nothing.
I scribbled over all five without looking at her.
"Your artistic commentary needs about as much work as this school's track recruiting strategy."
Priya sat back, unbothered. "Are you actually going back this year? To the team?"
"I have completed my transition from Promising Young Athlete to Taxpayer-in-Training. The pivot is final."
"We don't pay taxes yet."
"I pay a different kind. Two hours of football coverage every Friday night, zero contribution to the local economy. That's a tax."
Ms. Velez stacked her papers against the desk without looking up. "Riley. The assembly is not optional. I know what happened last year."
"Last year I was engaged in unsupervised endurance training in the guidance counselor's office. Personal wellness initiative."
"Priya." She moved on without acknowledging that. "You're in charge of making sure Riley walks through the gymnasium doors."
Priya gave a small salute. I looked at her. She looked back, entirely too pleased with her assignment.
The bell rang. I got exactly three steps toward the side stairwell before her hand closed around my backpack strap.
"Wrong direction," she said, and pulled.
Forty-seven minutes in, the gymnasium smelled like floor wax. Priya and I were in the general student section, third row from the top, far enough from the floor that I could track exits without being obvious. The principal had already introduced the swim team as "aquatic ambassadors" and cross-country as "long-distance visionaries." Priya and I were building a running list for the senior memory book.
The football team came out to a roar I could feel in my chest. Around me, students stood, cheering for people they'd been ignoring in class an hour earlier.
I was calculating whether a bathroom emergency could get me to the side exit when the screen flickered to life and the principal announced the Wildcat Resilience reel.
Priya stopped fanning herself with her program. "Riley. Is that—"
I looked up.
Regional qualifier, two years ago. I knew it before I recognized the jersey number. I remembered the thick, warm air and how certain I'd been that I was going to win. A girl in Westbridge colors was leading the field, her stride clean and certain.
The video answered before I did. A hurdle in the second half of the race. The contact. Me going down.
The gymnasium went quiet. Then the principal's voice came through, warm and practiced—resilience, setbacks, a champion's story, and the young woman in that video is right here with us today.
The spotlight found me before I could move. Students in my row turned one by one. They looked from the screen to me.
The principal invited me to stand.
I stood. But I didn't give them the face the reel was designed to produce. I looked at the screen, then toward the principal at the microphone, and spoke loud enough for the room to hear.
"Does Westbridge have a formal policy on showing someone's injury footage without asking them first?"
The principal blinked. "We wanted to celebrate your resilience—"
"Great word. Why does the video start with the fall? There are forty-five seconds of me actually racing before that. Did that part offend the editing team?"
Laughter broke in the upper rows and spread. This time, it wasn't aimed at me.
I looked toward the AV booth. "If the point is resilience, you could rewind about eight seconds. That's the part where I'm still ahead. I'll wait."
Someone at the booth checked the footage. Then the screen shifted to the image I'd asked for: me over a hurdle, body angled forward, still in the race.
I let them look for three seconds.
"Next time you use my story, pick a frame where I'm still standing."
The gym erupted. Priya grabbed my arm as I sat down, whispering something that included you just made them recut the promo reel live, and I smiled because it was either that or something else entirely.
The frozen frame held for another three seconds before they cut away—me mid-flight, absolutely certain. I remembered exactly what I'd been thinking at that moment. Not tactics, not the girl in lane four. Just the certainty that my body was doing what I'd trained it to do. I hadn't doubted it.
Then the frame cut to black, and I reached for my bag.
The corridor past the gym's side door wasn't the route back to the main building. I figured that out when the signs started pointing toward visiting locker rooms and field tunnels. I kept walking anyway, because going back meant passing three hundred people who had just watched me either embarrass myself or embarrass the school, and I hadn't decided which version I was telling yet.
"That way doesn't go to the main building."
I didn't turn around. "Is there a designated route for escaping public inspiration ceremonies, or do we improvise?"
"You never used to run," the voice said.
Used to. Whoever he was, he wasn't talking about what had just happened in the gym.
I turned around.
He was taller than he had any right to be. Twelve on his chest, the number the gymnasium had been chanting four minutes ago, and my student ID in his right hand. I must have dropped it at the side door.
Cole Mercer, starting quarterback. The name had been bouncing off gymnasium walls all afternoon. I knew who he was. Or I thought I did.
He held out the ID. I took it.
"Sharp-shooter."
The card nearly slipped through my fingers.
I looked again—not at the jersey or the height. His eyes stayed on my face, waiting for my reaction. And there he was: the boy from the back of a camp van who used to argue he shouldn't have to run the relay because his group already had enough people.
"Cole Mercer," I said.
"You dropped that."
I tightened my grip on the ID. "Why do you still remember that name?"
"You said it every morning at the same volume you use for everything else. Hard to forget."
"I was helping you. Everyone kept trying to pull you from the rotation. I kept you in."
"You kept me in," he agreed. "You also announced my mile time to the entire dining hall."
"Logistics problem, not a character flaw."
"You didn't ask me if I wanted to be kept in."
I opened my mouth. I closed it.
I didn't have an answer ready. That annoyed me almost as much as the question.
From inside the gymnasium, someone shouted his name. More voices joined until the gym was chanting for him.
No one had noticed me leave.
I looked at the twelve on his jersey. "You clearly don't need anyone arguing for your spot anymore." Then: "Hi, Bench."
He went still for half a second. I'd expected anger. Instead, he stayed there looking at me.
The door swung open. An equipment manager stuck his head out. Cole raised one hand without looking away.
"I'll be right there."
His smile came slowly, as if I'd just confirmed something.
"There you are," he said.
He walked through the door, and the cheering filled the corridor before it swung shut again.
I looked down at my student ID.
The whole school had watched me fall. Cole Mercer remembered the girl running before it happened.
But the version he remembered wasn't quite the one I'd been telling myself about for seven years.

The Billionaire's Mask (A Dark Steamy Romance)
After One Night with the Alpha
I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.
My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.
But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.
In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.
"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.
"Who the fuck is Jason?"
My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.
I ran away for my life!
But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!
They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.
Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”
There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.
