CHAPTER 1: SELECTED
Ren Ashford was not special.
That was the problem.
At twenty-two, he had nothing that stood out. No talent worth mentioning. No connections. No money. Just a cramped room, a dying phone, and a life that moved in circles.
Wake up. Work. Eat. Sleep.
Repeat.
That night was no different.
The power had gone out again.
Ren sat by the window, watching the dark stretch across the city. Aba never really slept, but tonight felt quieter. Off. Like something had been removed from the world and no one noticed.
His phone buzzed.
A single notification.
No app name. No sender.
Just a black screen with white text.
[YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED.]
Ren frowned.
“Selected for what?”
He tapped it.
The screen flickered.
Then,
Everything went silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence that felt wrong. Like the world had been muted.
The fan stopped.
The distant generators cut off.
Even the sound of his own breathing… disappeared.
Ren stood up slowly.
“Okay… not funny.”
The room darkened.
Not because the light was gone, but because something else had taken its place.
The walls stretched.
The ceiling seemed farther away.
And then the second message appeared.
[WELCOME, PLAYER.]
A sharp pain hit his skull.
Ren dropped to one knee, gripping his head.
“What… is this,”
[INITIALIZING SYSTEM…]
Something cold slid down his spine.
Like something was touching his thoughts.
[NAME: REN ASHFORD]
[STATUS: ACTIVE]
[SANITY: 100%]
“Sanity…?”
Ren forced himself to stand.
“This is a dream.”
It had to be.
There was no other explanation.
Dreams felt real sometimes.
People said that.
This....this had to be one of those.
The third message appeared.
[FIRST TRIAL WILL BEGIN SHORTLY.]
The room vanished
One moment he stood in his room, the next, he was somewhere entirely foreign.
Cold air hit his face.
Ren staggered forward, barely catching himself, looking up he found out that the city was gone.
This place looks like a city, but something was different about this place, the buildings had blue colours shinning brightly.
Buildings leaned at impossible angles.
Streetlights flickered with a sick yellow glow.
The sky above was not a sky.
It moved much slower.
Like something alive was pressing against it from the other side.
Ren’s chest tightened.
“Where am i?” he asked no one in particular then he heard footsteps behind him.
Dozens of people stood scattered across the street.
Men. Women. Young. Old.
All feeling confused and afraid just like him.
A girl near him spoke first.
“Is this… some kind of prank?”
No one answered.
Another message appeared in the air.
This time, everyone saw it.
A massive black panel stretching across the sky.
[TRIAL 1: NIGHT OF THE HUNT]
[OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE UNTIL DAWN]
[PLAYERS: 47]
[WARNING: YOU ARE NOT ALONE]
A man laughed nervously.
“Survive? That’s it? Easy.”
Ren didn’t laugh.
Something felt wrong. Was this a test he asked himself
He looked around
Scanning and Listening to the environment.
That’s when he noticed it.
The silence.
Not total silence like before.
But something close
No one was moving, no birds were chirping ,no noise .
Then the final line appeared.
[THE HUNT BEGINS IN: 00:00:10]
Panic broke instantly.
“What hunt?!”
“Hey! What’s going on?!”
“This isn’t funny anymore!”
People started moving.
Running.
Shouting.
Ren didn’t move, he wanted to move, but his instinct held him back.
He stood quietly watching then suddenly
He started counting
Not the people but
The space between buildings.
The shadows.
The blind spots.

His breathing slowed.
If this was real,
Panic would get him killed.

He stepped backward.
Positioning himself near a broken storefront.
One entrance.
One exit.
Less angles to worry about.

The sky twitched, this time it was not the light or the cloud it was, something else,
Something was watching.

Ren felt it.
That same cold presence from before.
Closer now it seemed
Interested.

From the alleys
Something started to come out from the buildings, from places that were once empty, they looked hungry,
Then a woman scream caught his attention
Ren’s heart slammed against his ribs.
“Run.”
He didn’t wait to see more.
Behind him,
Something gave chase.

But he felt it.
