Chapter 1
"I know you're going to hate me for doing this but I still have to do it anyway," Deon said when their romantic dinner date was almost over.
Carina shot him a questioning look as her heart thumped loudly in her chest, she hadn't heard what the news was about, but from the look on his face, she was scared already.
"I'm listening." She managed to reply,
"I finally got a promotion at work," he said. She breathed a sigh of relief and chuckled, wondering which part of that sentence was supposed to make her hate him, but it seemed that she had concluded too early when he continued, "I have to leave the country, I will be going to France to manage our new branch." He said.
Again, another sigh of relief accompanied by a smile, Deon had a way of raising her blood pressure for nothing, "what is there to hate about this? It's great news. We need to toast to that."
But Deon's face didn't look cheerful, "I can't do the long-distance Carina..."
"Well... well we can get married, then you'll take me along," Carina said, her heart racing like she was being chased a thousand miles.
Deon still had that sunken look on his face, "I can't, Carina, you know your family has never supported this relationship,"
"But that's not an excuse, we are still together against their wishes so what stops us from getting married now?" She cried.
"I can't do that to you, I can't whisk you away and isolate you from your family like that, that's why it's best to bring this relationship to an end." He said firmly.
Carina shook her head as tears threatened to drop down her cheeks, "But Deon I also have news for you. That's why I was eager for this date."
It was his turn to be anxious, "what news?"
"I'm pregnant, it's a month old and I'm looking forward to doing this with you." She broke the news of her pregnancy but with no trace of a smile on her face, she was unsure of how he was going to react to the news, especially now that he was asking for a breakup.
He shook his head, "This isn't the right time, you have to get rid of it."
"What? I will never do that in a million years!" She shrieked.
"Then you're on your own Carina! This is an opportunity of a lifetime and I can't mess it up. Your family has high hopes for you, and that's why they never supported our relationship. Now I have the opportunity to be somebody, I can't let you mess it up."
"What the hell are you talking about? Are you not old enough to get married? What could possibly go wrong if we get married?" She yelled.
"Carina, this relationship is over, I'm so sorry. And as for a child, I'm not ready, please let it go. Find someone who will love you and I think having this baby might stand in your way so please let it go."
Carina burst into tears, not caring that she was causing a scene,
"Carina please, you're embarrassing us." He said, trying to take her hand.
But she snatched her hand from the table, with anger in her eyes, "Did you ever love me?"
"I really did," he nodded.
"So what about now? Do you still feel the same about me?"
"Carina, I will always respect you..."
"Respect!" She echoed it even louder since she couldn't hear herself clearly due to how loud her heart was crashing.
"Please don't make this harder than it already is." He said,
"I don't want to break up and I don't want to lose our baby! Please, Deon." She begged him while fighting back tears that threatened to fall.
"Please, Carina do not make me look like a bad person, this was hard news to break already," Deon pleaded.
But she cried even louder, "I went to war with my family for you, what am I going to say now? How am I going to face them now? This is embarrassing, please don't do this." She wept.
"I'm so sorry, it's just that the distance isn't okay for me, I can't do it. Please bear with me and let's let this go. You will find a better person who will make you happy, trust me." He said trying to appease her but it only upset her even more.
She wept and made Deon ashamed to be at the Diner with her, he had to disappear else people would think that he had done something terrible to her.
"I will be right back" he excused himself and went to settle their bill without her knowing. Then he silently left the diner without any prior notice.
Carina sat there crying for hours, before noticing that Deon had still not come back, she called a waiter and pointed to his empty seat,
"Where is he?" She asked in a shaky voice.
"He left, didn't he tell you?" The waiter asked.
Carina paused crying to process the information,
"What? When did he leave?" She queried the waiter, still unable to believe what she had just heard.
"He went to settle the bill and then left." The waiter informed her,
She packed up and hurried out of the diner to find him, running to the bus stop she stopped a taxi and headed straight for his house, he had to explain what was going on to her. She needed better closure than this.
She knocked on his door but no one answered, but that didn't stop her from knocking even harder, there was still no answer, the lights were off. So she sat at the front door waiting for him to show up but there was still no sign of him.
When she rang the bell one last time, the next-door neighbor opened the door with a frown on her face,
"He's not there, he traveled with his new girlfriend, they packed everything out and even sold some of them. Didn't you know?" She blurted out.
Carina tried to open her mouth to speak but no words came out, she was so confused, that the questions that ran through her mind failed to come out of her mouth.
She tried to catch her breath, new girlfriend? Since when did Deon start seeing someone else? Why didn't she know this?
Meaning the whole thing had been planned a long time ago, he had already meant to leave the country but he was now telling her about it, how evil! When did he start seeing this girl? And most importantly who was this new girl?

The Contract Wife: Marriage Of Malice
He didn't finish. He didn't need to.
I didn't tell him to stop.
Instead, my fingers curled into his shirt, clutching the fabric as though it was my only anchor. Something in him snapped—something he had been holding back for too long. His mouth found mine in a kiss that wasn't tender, but hungry, desperate.
I gasped into him, his hand sliding up to cup my jaw, holding me as if afraid I might vanish.
"You drive me insane," he breathed against my mouth, his lips trailing to my throat. "I can't lose you, Ella. Not you."
My head fell back, a soft sound escaping me as his fingers memorized my waist. My anger melted beneath his desperation.
"James..." I whispered, more plea than protest.
His hand caught mine, fingers threading together tightly. "I'll bring him back. I swear it. Just... don't turn away from me. Please."
The word please—low, ragged, almost broken—undid me more than anything else could have.
