Introduction

Eighteen months ago, Chiara Romano had it all: captain of the national volleyball team, an unstoppable spike, and a promising future. Then came the ultimate betrayal. Sabotaged on the court by her bitterest rival, Bianca, and abandoned by her cheating ex, Lorenzo, Chiara suffered a catastrophic knee injury that left her in a wheelchair and her career in ashes.
Now, every doctor in Italy claims she will never play again offering her a pity contract in a commentary booth instead. But Chiara refuses to sit on the sidelines while her betrayers bask in the spotlight.
Enter Marco Bellini: a cold, ruthless media mogul and single father who secretly possesses the genius biomechanics background needed to rebuild broken athletes. Scarred by a brutal, public divorce, Marco guards his heart behind iron walls and wants nothing to do with volleyball until Chiara breaks into his office and demands a second chance.
Forced together in a high-stakes, off-the-grid training regimen on his private Lake Como estate, sparks fly between two guarded souls. But Chiara’s path back to the Serie A1 is paved with landmines. From starting from scratch with junior-level squads and dodging dirty sabotage from her former team, to surviving media schemes and Marco's scheming ex-wife, Chiara must fight for every point.
When dangerous misunderstandings and false allegations threaten to tear Chiara and Marco apart, she will have to prove that even if she was shattered, her resolve is entirely unstoppable.

Chapter 1

The squeak of my rubber-soled shoes against the polished rehab floor echoed through the empty gym like a warning.

"Again, Chiara. Land squarely on the left foot this time," Dr. Caelio said, his voice flat and devoid of encouragement. He stood three feet away, clipboard tucked beneath his arm, watching my lower body with cold precision of an engineer inspecting a cracked engine block.

I adjusted my stance, wiping sweat off my forehead with the back of my forearm. My left knee throbbed a dull, relentless ache that had become my constant companion over the last eighteen months. I bent my knees, took a short approach step, leapt into the air, and drove my right arm forward in a phantom spike before coming down.

Pain shot up my femur the second my foot touched the rubber mat. My left leg buckled inward. I didn't fall my pride refused to let me hit the deck but I stumbled twice, grabbing the steel parallel bars beside me to stabilize my body.

"That’s eight degrees of valgus collapse on landing," Caelio noted, tapping his pen against the board. "The lateral meniscus graft simply isn't holding under high impact. Sit down."

"I can correct it," I snapped, breathing hard through my nose. "Give me another set. I just misjudged the angle."

"You’ve misjudged the angle on six out of ten attempts today," Caelio replied, his tone remaining infuriatingly measured. He pulled a stool over and sat down, looking up at me. "Chiara, your knee was completely shattered. You had three surgeries in twelve months. The fact that you walked into my clinic today without a cane is a medical achievement. But professional volleyball? The Serie A1? You will tear that graft within twenty minutes of a real match."

"I am twenty-four years old," I said, my hand gripping the cold steel bar so tightly my knuckles turned white. "My career isn't over."

"Your playing career is," Caelio said bluntly. He reached into his leather bag and pulled out a sleek blue folder, sliding it onto the bench beside me. "This is from Bellini Media. They are expanding their European broadcast coverage for the upcoming season. Because of your history as the former national team captain, they’re willing to offer you a three-year contract as a court-side analyst. The pay is exceptional, and it keeps you in the sport without destroying your body."

I looked at the folder. The embossed silver logo of Bellini Media shimmered under the harsh fluorescent lights of the Milan clinic. Pity. It was a golden parachute wrapped in corporate branding.

Before I could answer, the glass door to the training room swung open. Rodriguez walked in, his heavy coat damp from the September rain outside. He looked at Caelio, then at me, his eyes dropping to the blue folder on the bench.

"Is that the medical report?" Rodriguez asked, stopping beside my stool.

"It’s the final verdict," Caelio said, standing up. "I cannot sign her medical clearance for competitive play. If she continues to force high-impact jumping, she risks permanent joint damage."

"Thank you, Doctor," Rodriguez said quietly.

Caelio gave me a brief, sympathetic nod before walking out, his rubber soles squeaking until the door clicked shut behind him.

Silence fell over the gym, heavy and suffocating. Above us, mounted in the corner of the room, a flat-screen television played the afternoon sports bulletin on silent. A graphic flashed across the screen the official press conference for the Italian Women's Volleyball National Team.

I stared at the screen. The camera panned over to the podium where Bianca stood in a tailored white blazer, holding up the team's official jersey. Her golden hair fell perfectly over her shoulders, her smile bright, practiced, and radiant. Beside her stood Lorenzo, looking sleek in his designer suit, holding a microphone as he announced his family firm's multi-million euro sponsorship of the team.

My chest tightened until breathing felt like swallowing glass.

Eighteen months ago, Bianca was the bench player who couldn't read a basic cross-court set. Lorenzo was the man who held my hand in the hospital after my first knee reconstruction, telling me everything would be fine, only to leave the building and sleep with her the night before our championship match. Then came the collision at the net, Bianca's deliberate slide under the tape, my landing, the crunch of bone, and the darkness.

Now, she had my captain's armband. He had the corporate glory. And I had a blue folder offering me a microphone so I could talk about her victories from the sidelines.

"Turn it off," I whispered.

Rodriguez grabbed the remote off the desk and killed the monitor. He turned to face me, folding his arms over his chest. "Caelio is the top orthopedic consultant in Lombardy, Chiara. If he won't sign the clearance, no club in Italy will put you on their roster."

I reached down, picked up the Bellini Media contract, and tore it straight down the middle. I folded the halves together and tore them again, dropping the white and blue scraps onto the rubber floor.

"I am not sitting in a broadcast booth watching Bianca play with my team," I said, my voice steady, stripped of all tears. I had cried enough in the wheelchair last year. "I am playing."

Rodriguez let out a long breath, rubbing the bridge of his nose. He didn't yell. He had been my agent since I was sixteen, back when I was just a scholarship kid with raw talent and a fierce spike. He knew me better than anyone.

"You're stubborn, Chiara. You always have been," he said quietly. He reached inside his coat pocket and pulled out a black leather notebook, flipping through a few pages before pulling out a folded piece of paper. He handed it to me. "I knew Caelio would say no. So I looked into alternative options."

I unfolded the paper. On it was a printed profile sheet. At the top was a photograph of a man in his mid-thirties with sharp, uncompromising features, dark eyes, and a jawline that looked carved from granite.

"Marco Bellini," I read aloud. "The CEO of Bellini Media?"

"In the corporate world, yes," Rodriguez said. "He controls half the sports broadcasting rights in Southern Europe. He’s ruthless, wealthy, and almost impossible to deal with. But what the public doesn't know—or rather, what his family paid to keep out of the tabloids is that before he took over his father's conglomerate, Marco was a FIBA and CEV Master-certified performance coach. He specialized in biomechanics and athletic recovery."

I looked up from the sheet. "He’s a billionaire. Why would he coach?"

"He doesn't anymore," Rodriguez answered. "Five years ago, his family forced him into the executive chair. Then his marriage imploded two years ago a very public, very ugly divorce that left him cynical and shut off from the world. He lives like a recluse on his private estate on Lake Como when he isn't in his Milan offices."

"If he doesn't coach, why are you showing me this?"

"Because he has a private, state-of-the-art biomechanics laboratory and court built inside his Como property," Rodriguez said, stepping closer. "And because he’s the only man in Europe with enough private medical authority and money to override regional sports boards if he personally certifies an athlete's fitness."

I looked down at the photo of Marco Bellini. His eyes were cold, distant, and completely unreadable.

"He doesn't take clients," Rodriguez added. "He hasn't touched a volleyball court in years. If you go to him, he’ll probably throw you off his property before you even get past the front gate."

"He won't," I said, folding the paper and shoving it into the pocket of my track pants. I stood up, ignoring the sharp protest in my left knee, and grabbed my gym bag off the bench.

"Where are you going?" Rodriguez asked as I headed for the door.

"To Milan," I said without looking back. "He’s going to fix my leg."
