Introduction

My cousin stole thirty thousand dollars from our dying grandmother.
Not for an emergency. Not for bills.
For liposuction.
Then she told everyone I did it. Said I was jealous of her figure — that I'd drained Grandma's cardiac surgery fund because I wanted to look different. And the terrible part is, everyone believed her. My boyfriend. My uncle and aunt. Every single person who'd watched me grow up in that house — eating their leftovers standing at the kitchen counter, wearing my aunt's old coat with the broken zipper through every winter — turned around and decided I was the thief.
I couldn't prove otherwise. I couldn't get anyone to listen.
Last time this happened, I didn't survive it.
Then I opened my eyes. I was back in the hospital corridor. My aunt's hand raised, ready to swing.

Chapter 1

"Sloane Voss, you heartless little snake! Your grandmother is in the ICU waiting for her surgery and you stole her thirty thousand dollars for a nose job?! I will kill you today!"

My eyes snapped open — vision still catching up — but my body moved first. I grabbed my aunt Renata's wrist before her palm could land.

Her face was inches from mine. Twisted, spit flying.

I froze for one second. Then it all came back — and the feeling that hit me wasn't fear.

I'm back.

Back to the turning point. Grandma rushed in with a cardiac emergency, thirty thousand dollars gone from the account, and every single person in this family pointing at me.

Last time, I couldn't get a word in. My boyfriend Elliot didn't help — he told me to admit it and pay up. They pinned the label on me and threw me out, and I died with nothing and no one.

"Let go! You dare fight back?!" Renata shrieked, yanking at her wrist.

I let go — and shoved. She stumbled backward and dropped onto the bench against the corridor wall.

"You want to make accusations, back them up." I looked down at her. "Where's your proof?"

"What proof?!" My cousin Celeste stepped in from the side, eyes already red, wearing a yoga set that showed off every curve. "Sloane, I know you've always been jealous of my figure. I know you hate the acne on your face. But that was Grandma's surgery money. You can't gamble with her life just because you want to look different."

The nurses and patient families nearby started murmuring.

"A face like that and a heart like that — who would've thought."

"Stealing from a sick grandmother for cosmetic surgery. That's evil."

I stared at Celeste and felt the blood go hot in my skull. Last time around I fell for that exact look — fragile, innocent, already in tears. I didn't find out until I was dying that the one who'd taken the thirty thousand was Celeste herself, every cent of it spent on a full-body liposuction. And after she slimmed down, she told everyone it was from the gym. Daily cardio. Pure discipline.

"Sloane, stop making a scene." My boyfriend Elliot pushed through the crowd — tailored jacket, gold-rimmed glasses, practiced frown. He looked at me like I was a problem he'd already decided how to handle.

"Celeste is in tears. You're still arguing? I know you've been short on money, but when you make a mistake, you own it. Give the money back, apologize to your grandmother, and I'll talk to her family for you."

My stomach turned.

"Which of your eyes saw me take anything?" I said. "Where do you get off standing there calling me guilty?"

Elliot stiffened. He clearly hadn't expected that. "Sloane! I'm trying to help you. Don't be ungrateful."

"Help me?" I looked at him. "You heard someone cry for two seconds and picked a side. You're more disgusting than someone who actually does wrong — at least they own it.

"If you love defending Celeste so much, go be her dad. We're done. Right now. Get away from me."

"You — you're breaking up with me?" He stared.

"I'm saying you've been dumped. Take your fake goodwill somewhere else."

I turned away from him and looked straight at Celeste. "You want to say I stole the money? Fine. Let's make it loud."

Before I dialed, I looked down the hallway.

Past the nurses' station, past the double doors — the narrow ICU window.

Grandma was in the bed. Eyes half-open. She wasn't calling out, wasn't moving.

But she was watching.

She hadn't looked away.

I held that for one second. Then I dialed.

"Nobody goes anywhere until this gets settled.

Thrown into Isteros Academy—a world of old money, blood money, and cruel social games—she's an outsider by birth and an afterthought by design. Her sister Solyn is the school's untouchable queen and Mara is her favorite target.
Everyone expects Atreus to treat his fiancée’s scholarship sister like everyone else does—as if she doesn’t matter.
Instead, his dorm room sits directly across from hers, close enough that she can see his light go out at night. Some nights, he climbs the old maintenance trellis just to check on her. He teaches her chess. He shows up exactly when something's gone wrong—and never once asks to be thanked for it.
"Don't fall in love with one piece," he warns her, over a board neither of them treats like a game anymore. "It punishes the person who only sees half of it."
Mara doesn't understand why the boy who's supposed to make her life harder keeps quietly making it easier—not until she realizes the anonymous stranger she's been writing to every week already has a name.
His.
He doesn't know he's writing to her, either.
By the time they find out, it's too late to stop what's already happening. Far too dangerous for anyone to find out.
In an empty studio, in the middle of a rainstorm, she asks him: 'Am I the kind of girl who kisses a boy engaged to my sister?'
He doesn't answer.
So she asks: 'What are we?’
He told her not to fall in love with one piece.
She fell anyway.
And he was never far behind.
