Introduction

Ryan forgot my thirtieth birthday.

But he remembered that his partner Sloane was allergic to nuts, that she liked Perrier-Jouët champagne, and that her celebration cake had to be salted caramel.

I was sitting in the ER with a 102°F fever when he called — not to ask where I was, but to have me double-check the guest list for Sloane's dinner party.

I typed: "I have a fever. I'm at the hospital."

Then I watched him rattle off champagne vintages, and deleted it letter by letter.

That night, on a plastic chair in the emergency room, I made a decision.

It was time to go.

I signed the appointment letter for the new Milwaukee hotel. Left the ring and the keys on his desk.

And then — I chose to raise myself all over again.

That night, on a plastic chair in the emergency room, I made a decision.

It was time to go.

I signed the appointment letter for the new Milwaukee hotel. Left the ring and the keys on his desk.

And then — I chose to raise myself all over again.

Chapter 1

My finger had been hovering over the "Leave Group" button for three full minutes.

I finally pressed it.

Ryan's company chat — "Chicago Flagship Grand Opening Celebration" — vanished from my world.

Seconds later, my phone buzzed.

It was Ryan.

He didn't ask why I'd left the group. He didn't ask whether I'd gotten off work.

All he sent was a terse command:

"Rejoin immediately. The media will find out soon enough — don't create an awkward situation at a time like this."

I stared at those cold words on the screen, locked my phone, and didn't reply.

The truth was, I wasn't at my apartment in Columbus at all.

To surprise him during the flagship's opening week — which also happened to fall on my thirtieth birthday — I had rebooked my flight to arrive in Chicago early.

I'd imagined that after five years of weekend-commuter dating, this surprise would be the perfect beginning of our new life together.

But I had clearly underestimated the Midwest's early-summer thunderstorms.

Flights were grounded en masse. The airport terminal was packed with desperate travelers.

Every rental-car counter screen blinked the same merciless word: "Sold Out."

As a hotel operations manager, I was long accustomed to handling crises on the fly. So I shouldered my bag, rerouted, boarded a late-night long-distance bus, and eventually hitched a ride in a sedan that reeked of stale cigarettes from Indianapolis all the way to Chicago.

What should have been a comfortable three-hour flight turned into an eleven-hour odyssey of exhaustion.

At one in the morning, the view beyond the car window was nothing but Chicago's relentless cold rain.

Ryan had promised to pick me up himself — one of the rare commitments he'd actually made during our five years of long-distance.

But just as the sedan was approaching the designated drop-off point, my phone rang.

"Claire," Ryan's voice came through against a noisy background, "listen, I'm really sorry, but I can't come get you right now."

My heart plummeted. "What happened?"

"Sloane's dog accidentally ate an entire box of high-percentage dark chocolate." His words came fast, laced with undisguised anxiety. "It's bad — the dog needs emergency stomach pumping. She's completely falling apart. I have to go with her to the veterinary ER. Can you wait at the drop-off point for a bit? As soon as the emergency's handled, I'll come straight to you."

"Okay," I answered, considerate as always. "Saving the dog comes first. Go."

After hanging up, I planted myself beneath the awning of a convenience store that had already closed for the night on a dark street corner.

Cold wind drove rain against my trench coat. The suitcase at my feet felt impossibly heavy.

I told myself: Sloane wasn't just his brand director — she was the partner who'd been with him through the earliest days of building the company.

A dog whose life was in danger genuinely needed help.

As his fiancée, I shouldn't — couldn't — compete with a poisoned pet for priority. Right?

But one hour passed.

Then another half hour.

During nearly two hours of waiting, the puddle at the street corner reflected the sickly white glow of the streetlamp. My hands were almost numb with cold.

The night wind cut through my thin trench coat, but Ryan never called again. Not even a simple text — "The ER is still going, are you okay?" — ever arrived.

I was like a to-do item buried at the very bottom of a forgotten memo.

At 2:45 a.m., my phone finally buzzed in my pocket.

Ryan's number. But the instant I read the screen, my stomach filled with ice water:

"Claire, don't wait up tonight. Ryan is with me waiting for test results — he can't step away. I've had the company's partner fleet arrange a driver for you. He'll take you to a business hotel near O'Hare to rest. — Sloane."

I stared at the screen, fingertips white.

A pet poisoning was genuinely an emergency — I understood that.

But he could have called me himself. Sent me a message.

He didn't.

On a strange city's street in the dead of night, he stayed with another woman to manage her emotional crisis, while I was shoved far away. He couldn't even be bothered to notify me himself — he'd handed that responsibility, as a matter of course, to her.

I had crossed an enormous distance, waited alone in the cold wind for nearly two hours, and all I got was this.

A black sedan pulled smoothly to a stop in front of me.

The driver stepped out with an umbrella, loaded my luggage into the trunk.

I climbed numbly into the back seat. The warm blast from the air conditioning hit my face instantly, and the combined weight of exhaustion nearly swallowed me whole.

I slumped back, eyes closed, and my palm instinctively pressed against the leather seat beside me for support — but my fingers landed on something soft and cold.

I looked down.

It was a deep-grey cashmere scarf I had spent the better part of a month knitting for Ryan, stitch by stitch, with my own hands.

He'd said Chicago winters were brutal. This was his favorite texture.

But now, the scarf that had once carried my body heat and my devotion was tossed carelessly on the back seat.

And pinned to its edge — glaringly, unmistakably — was a gold camellia brooch.

Sloane Whitaker's signature accessory.

Everyone knew she adored camellias.

Neon reflections slid across the rain-soaked pavement beyond the window.

I slowly picked up the scarf and pinched the delicate gold brooch between my fingertips.

Its cold metal and the sharp point of the pin bit faintly into my skin.

For five years, I had made a habit of finding excuses for him — startup pressure, geographic distance, his partner, and an endless parade of emergencies.

As long as his reasons sounded plausible, I could swallow every grievance and keep being that understanding, endlessly-waiting Claire.

But tonight, holding this golden camellia that had driven itself like a spike into the fabric of my devotion, I was struck by a calm I had never felt before — a suffocating, absolute stillness.

For the first time, I didn't want to make excuses for him anymore.
