Introduction

Several years ago, Frederick and his wife Amelia made a heartbreaking decision: to exchange their newborn daughter, Analu, with the Thompson’s daughter, fearing that their baby wouldn’t survive a severe heart condition. Unknowingly, the Thompsons raised Analu, who not only overcame her illness but became a hardworking and determined young woman. Meanwhile, Alexia, the biological daughter of the Thompsons, grew up surrounded by luxury, although her perfect life was marked by a troubling sense of emptiness.

The lives of these two young women, unaware of the truth about their origins, become entangled in a dangerous love triangle. Nicolás is in love with Analu, but Alexia desires him for herself, though her heart secretly belongs to Mateo, the son of a magnate’s chauffeur, who has been treated like part of the family. The forbidden attraction between Alexia and Mateo adds a layer of tension that threatens to erupt at any moment.

The situation takes a darker turn when Frederick, overwhelmed with guilt, discovers that Analu survived and begins to deeply regret the decision that separated them. But the biggest secret is yet to be revealed: Amelia, Alexia’s mother, didn’t die as everyone believes, but was kidnapped and has been held captive for years, lost in oblivion after losing her memory.

Now, with the truth threatening to come to light, Frederick must face a devastating decision: reveal what happened and shatter the lives of everyone he loves, or continue hiding the secret that could destroy everything. The past returns with force, unleashing a whirlwind of betrayal, forbidden passions, and dark secrets that will force each of them to confront their worst fears. What price are they willing to pay for the truth?

Chapter 1

The delivery room was filled with tension. The monitors beeped constantly, marking each second as Amelia, exhausted and on the brink of pain, fought to bring her daughter into the world. Her husband, Frederick, was by her side, but his face did not reflect the typical excitement of a first-time father; in his eyes, desperation and fear were evident.

—Amelia, push! —the doctor shouted, and with one last effort, the baby finally arrived. However, the infant's cry was not strong; it was barely a weak whimper that made the doctor and nurses exchange worried glances.

—There’s a problem with her heart… —the doctor murmured, turning to Frederick— It’s serious, she has congenital heart disease. She will need immediate intervention.

Frederick clenched his jaw, and a dark shadow clouded his eyes. Amelia, lying on the stretcher, sweaty and exhausted, barely had the strength to speak, but in her mind, she had already made a decision along with her husband.

—Honey… —Amelia said with a breathless voice— You know what we have to do.

Frederick nodded. They had prepared everything with Miriam, the on-duty nurse. She was the key to their plan.

In another room of the hospital, Ana Lucía was also preparing for the birth of her daughter. It had been a complicated but hopeful pregnancy. Mr. Thompson, nervous, held her hand tightly.

—Everything is going to be alright —he whispered, though in his chest, he felt a twinge of fear.

Moments later, the strong and clear cry of a baby filled the delivery room, and Ana Lucía's eyes lit up with tears of joy.

—It’s a girl! —the doctor announced with a smile, but before they could place her on Ana Lucía's chest, the door swung open, and Miriam entered with a serious expression.

—I’m sorry, there’s a complication. I must take her for routine examinations —Miriam said, snatching the baby from the doctor’s arms before Ana Lucía could even see her. Ana Lucía tried to protest, but the exhausting labor had left her without strength. She could only watch as her baby disappeared into Miriam’s arms, leaving an inexplicable void in her chest.

In the hallway, Miriam walked with firm steps, holding the infant in her arms, knowing that the next step of the plan was about to unfold. A few meters from the room, two men dressed discreetly waited in a dimly lit corner. They had been hired by Frederick and Amelia to complete the sinister exchange. When Miriam reached them, there were no words, just a cold glance. One of the men opened a duffel bag, pulling out a bundle of cash that he placed in Miriam’s hands.

—Here’s the healthy baby —the nurse murmured, handing them Ana Lucía’s daughter, whose cry faded into the distance as the men quickly took her away. —Make sure she gets to Frederick —Miriam said quietly, as she hid the money in her uniform and watched the men disappear through a back door of the hospital.

Then, with an impassive expression, she headed to the incubators where she left Amelia’s baby, the little one with heart problems. Her cry was weak, barely perceptible. The nurse placed her in the incubator without hesitation, changing the identification bracelets to ensure that no one would suspect the terrible exchange. She also left with the baby a small necklace that Frederick had made for her.

Ana Lucía, weakened and exhausted, still did not understand why they wouldn’t let her see her daughter, and although Mr. Thompson tried to calm her, both felt an inexplicable emptiness.

—Everything is going to be alright, dear —he whispered, although the worry in his voice was evident.

Meanwhile, Amelia and Frederick waited in the adjacent room for the men to bring them the healthy baby. Frederick took her in his arms with a sigh of relief. Amelia, exhausted, could barely lift her gaze, but upon seeing the child, a tired smile spread across her face.

—It’s done —Frederick said quietly.

They knew that their true daughter, the baby with heart problems, would not survive, and they had made the cruel decision to exchange her for Ana Lucía’s healthy child, thus securing a future without complications for themselves.

The men left the room to await payment for the job, leaving Frederick and Amelia with the infant, while Ana Lucía and Mr. Thompson faced, unknowingly, a future full of uncertainty and pain for the baby they believed was theirs, struggling for each breath in the incubator.

Meanwhile, Mr. Thompson, sensing an inexplicable unease, decided he could not walk away without first seeing the little girl he had admired. His heart raced as he made his way to the incubator room, feeling he needed to ensure that everything was alright.

Upon arrival, the atmosphere was tense and filled with the noise of machines. His heart stopped when he saw the little girl in the incubator, connected to multiple wires.

—She’s so precious! —exclaimed Mr. Thompson, his honey-colored eyes watching her through the glass of that room.

—Sir, you need to leave now. If not, I’ll be forced to call security —Miriam, the on-duty nurse, snapped angrily, approaching quickly with a frown and clenched fists.

Head downcast and dazed, Mr. Thompson left without saying a word, the echo of his footsteps resonating in the hallway. On the other hand, Ana Lucía remained in the room, waiting for news about her little daughter. Desperation consumed her, and the idea of losing her baby filled her with despair.

Then she heard a murmur. Two men were speaking in hushed tones, their words filled with gravity, as if discussing something crucial. Curiosity and fear pushed her to move a little closer to the door.

—We can’t let her find out —one of them said, his voice low and tense.

Ana Lucía felt a chill run down her spine. Something did not allow her to be at ease.

After a few minutes, Thompson entered the room where his wife was and took her hand tenderly, explaining the reason why their little girl was taken at birth without her being able to see her for even a second.

—Honey, our Analu had a problem with her superior vena cava, which is why they had to take her quickly to the incubator and then perform some examinations. Everything is going to be alright, I promise. She is a very beautiful baby, and in her eyes reflects the strength she possesses; however, we must be patient and wait for the examination results to know when she can go home —Tears streamed down Ana Lucía's cheeks as her husband left the room.

Mr. Thompson exited his wife’s room with a tight chest, feeling a mix of helplessness and frustration at seeing his daughter connected to machines. Every sound from the monitors seemed a painful reminder of the fragility of life. Unable to contain his anger and pain, he raised his fist and slammed it against the wall of the hallway. The blow echoed, and as he lowered his gaze, he saw blood beginning to flow from his knuckles.

Trying to calm down, he headed toward the nurses’ area to have his hand treated. However, his mind remained trapped in the suffering of his daughter, and his steps grew clumsy. It was then, lost in his thoughts, that he did not notice he was quickly approaching a young couple coming in the opposite direction. He accidentally collided with them, and the papers they were holding flew into the air, scattering across the floor.

—Oh! I’m sorry, it was my fault, I was lost in thought; I’ll help you pick it up —he said, awkwardly bending down while trying to help gather the fallen papers.

While doing so, he could not imagine that this couple, with whom he had collided, had inadvertently swapped the babies at birth. An error that at that moment seemed an insignificant coincidence, but which would actually alter their lives forever.

—It’s you! —the young woman said with a trembling voice, as she lowered her head trying to avoid being seen. With a folder in her hand, she proceeded to cover her face.

—Do we know each other? —Mr. Thompson asked without receiving any response. He bent down and helped to gather the papers. Once finished, he saw a manila envelope with a juicy sum of money, which was quickly snatched away by the couple, who hurriedly left.

—Wait, wait! You left this card —Thompson watched as the couple disappeared down the hallway, and while he was treated by the nurse, his mind was still spinning from what he had just seen. That card with the name ‘Ratasquilla’ left a bad taste in his mouth. He knew that this encounter was not coincidental, but at that moment, the well-being of his daughter occupied all his thoughts. Still, he could not shake off that strange feeling.
