The Assassin Who Came Home
Elara · Ongoing · 39.3k Words
Introduction
I wake as Serena Sterling, nineteen, the long-lost daughter my wealthy birth parents just brought home. My siblings sneer, my classmates write me off, but my parents cherish me. So I play soft, harmless, and hide every lethal skill I own. All while hunting the traitor who killed me.
The mask slips fast. Racing, fighting, wilderness survival, half a dozen languages — my true strength bleeds through. In the shadows, I rebuild my old intelligence network.
That’s when Erebus finds me.
Ruler of Obsidian, the global assassination syndicate. The only man on the kill list who could ever go toe-to-toe with me in my last life.
He’s everywhere. Loitering by the school gates. Appearing at galas. Standing outside my bedroom window at night.
I came back for a quiet life. For the truth.
But Erebus won’t let me go. Caught between gilded high society and the brutal killer world I once ruled — will I even survive this time?
Chapter 1
Serena Sterling/ Nyx:
The bullet clipped my shoulder and punched a hole in the wall behind me.
I rolled before it registered, hit the floor on my left side, and fired twice. The guy on my left dropped. I didn't look at him — my eyes were already locked on the second man, half his body exposed around the right-hand corner of the room.
Two shots. Clean.
Visible threats: Seven visible, including one possible on the mezzanine. Entry vectors: door, both flanks, overhead overwatch. Ambush formation — coordinated, pre-staged. This wasn't a meeting.
Cipher had told me my parents were here. East Verdia Bay, fourth floor, apartment 4C. He'd sent the address himself, in a channel only the two of us used, with the authentication code I'd set up after the Prague job.
I'd walked through the door expecting — I don't know. A face that looked like mine. A room that smelled like a home. Instead I got crossfire from four directions simultaneously, and the very specific kind of silence that precedes an ambush by about half a second.
My body had moved before any of that analysis finished.
I wasn't carrying the MK23 today. That one I'd left home, locked in the panel behind the bathroom mirror, because I hadn't wanted to scare them. My parents. The people I'd spent eighteen years not having. I'd brought the backup piece instead — smaller, lighter, the kind of gun that could pass for nothing if someone noticed the weight in my jacket. A reasonable concession for a first meeting.
Now, clearing the left side of the room at a dead sprint with seven armed contacts and no secondary weapon, I had to admit it was the only mistake I'd made all day.
But it was enough.
The two behind the overturned sofa were burning through rounds, buying time, not aiming. I didn't engage them head-on — went low along the wall instead, three steps, angled left, and shot them both through the gap between the cushion and the floor.
The three on the right were faster; they'd already started repositioning by the time I reached the half-open door at the far end of the hallway. I used it. Took the angle apart one inch at a time.
One. Two. The third one ran. I sidestepped, put a round in his calf, let him fall, and didn't hesitate on the follow-up shot.
Mezzanine. Elevated position. He's had a clear sightline on me since I entered.
That was the one that could have killed me. High ground, cover, and I'd been in the open twice. The only reason I was still breathing was that he was waiting for a clean shot and I hadn't given him one.
I backed up two steps, made a show of dropping the mag, let my movements go just slightly slower — the performance of someone out of ammunition, running the math, almost done. The muzzle above me shifted. Four inches. Just enough.
I stopped breathing. Raised the gun. Fired once.
The sound from up there was heavy and final.
The apartment went quiet.
Seven down — six on the floor, the mezzanine shooter included. One remaining.
He was in the corner by the window, back against the wall, knees pulled up, his weapon on the floor three feet away. His hands were shaking visibly from across the room.
I walked toward him at a normal pace — there was nothing to rush — and leveled the gun at his forehead. He looked up at me. His eyes held nothing but the specific terror of someone who had known, somewhere in the planning of all this, that this outcome was always a possibility.
I pulled the trigger.
The explosion hit the same instant.
The shockwave lifted me off my feet before I understood what was happening, and in that fractured half-second I saw it: a detonator in his open hand, wires running from his palm along the baseboards and disappearing into the back room. I had time to register the back room. Two chairs in it, positioned neatly, facing each other, as though someone had set them out for a conversation that was never going to happen.
Pre-staged. The whole apartment. The whole thing.
I had time for one thought before the world ended.
Cipher.
Antiseptic. That was the first thing.
I didn't open my eyes right away. Old habit — you inventory what you can before you move, because moving announces you're awake and being awake is information. Sound: soft mechanical hum, a cart wheeling past in a corridor somewhere, the low-frequency quiet of a building with thick walls.
Light: diffuse, coming from the left, probably a window. No direct sun. Afternoon, maybe, or heavy overcast. Temperature: sixty-eight, sixty-nine degrees. Controlled environment.
Hospital. Threat level: low. Probable status: patient, not prisoner. Exit routes: door left, window right, condition of window unknown.
I opened my eyes.
White ceiling. No restraints.
There was a woman in a wheelchair beside the bed, chin resting in one palm, elbow propped on the armrest, head tilted at the specific angle of someone who had fallen asleep sitting upright and hadn't noticed yet. Her breathing was slow and even. She'd probably been there for hours.
I did a peripheral sweep without moving my head.
Window — barred, external. Door — ajar, hallway visible beyond. Rolling tray table, bedside cabinet, a call button clipped to the railing. Standard room. And on the nightstand, a photograph in a small silver frame, angled slightly toward the bed as though whoever placed it there had wanted it visible from the pillow.
Irrelevant. Do not—
I looked at it anyway.
A couple standing in bright sunlight, the woman laughing with her whole face, cradling an infant against her chest. The man had his arm around her shoulders, and he was looking at the baby instead of the camera.
The frame's corners had gone soft — the silver worn down to bare metal, the edges rounded from handling, the way an object gets when it's been picked up and set down and picked up again so many times that the person doing it stopped noticing they were doing it.
Something in the back of my head, the part that's always running calculations, went quiet for exactly one beat.
The woman in the wheelchair moved. Her hand found my wrist before I'd processed that she was moving, and the water pitcher on the tray clattered against the bed rail, and she didn't care about the water pitcher at all.
"Serena." Her voice was sandpaper. The kind of hoarse that builds over days, not hours. "You're awake."
My wrist tensed under her grip — reflex, nothing personal — and then I felt it. The tremor in her fingers. Fine and constant, the way hands shake when the adrenaline has long since metabolized and only the exhaustion is left.
Serena.
Who the hell was Serena?

A PRINCESS IN DISGUISE; BOUND TO THE ENEMY KING
I fell to my knees, the cold marble digging into my skin. I had studied for years in the flickering candlelight, memorizing every herb and poison to pass the healer's exam. I wanted freedom. I wanted to save my mother from the servant's quarters. I placed second. I thought I had won my life back.
But the King didn't give me a badge of honor. He gave me a death sentence.
"Raven Thorne shall be wed to the King of Grok," he announced, his voice echoing in the silent hall. Princess Ellie, the woman who had tormented me for years, slapped her hands over her mouth to hide her cruel laughter. She was supposed to marry the Beast. Now, I was the lamb being sent to the slaughter in her place.
They say King Liam drinks the blood of his enemies. They say he is more monster than man. And now, I have to walk into his bedroom, wearing the Princess's silk gown, and pray he doesn't tear me apart.
I looked at the King, tears streaming down my face. "I'll do it," I whispered, my voice trembling. "But my mother must be safe."
I sold my body and soul to a monster to save her. But when the carriage door opened and I finally looked into the Beast's golden eyes, I realized the terrifying truth...
He wasn't a stranger. He was the man I met in the woods.
The CEO's Unspoken Love
Before I could answer, he moved closer, suddenly looming over me, his face inches from mine. I felt my breath caught, my lips parting in surprise.
"Then this is the price for speaking ill of me to others," he murmured, nipping my lower lip before claiming my mouth in a real kiss. It began as punishment but quickly transformed into something else entirely as I responded, my initial rigidity melting into compliance, then active participation.
My breathing accelerated, small sounds escaping my throat as he explored my body. His touches were both punishment and pleasure, drawing shudders from me that I thought he felt reverberating through his own body.
My nightgown had ridden up, his hands discovering more of mine with each caress. We were both lost in sensation, rational thought receding with each passing second...
Three years ago, to fulfill the wish of his grandmother, I was forced to marry Derek Wells, the second son of the family that had adopted me for ten years. He didn't love me, but I had secretly loved him all along.
Now, the three-year contractual marriage is about to end, but I feel that some kind of sentiment has developed between Derek and me that neither of us is willing to admit. I'm not sure if my feelings are right, but I know that we can't resist each other physically...
