Introduction
"Three years… You said residency. You said you couldn't leave her chemo."
"I couldn't. You were doing fine without me. Better, actually. I think God gave her that illness so you'd stay busy while I figured myself out."
I kept his secret for six years. Every time someone asked where my husband was, I said Germany. I said residency. I said he was building something for us.
I believed it because Zoe was sick and I could not afford to fall apart. I found out at a restaurant. He walked in with her, his hand on her back, her ring on his finger.
He looked at me the way you look at someone you have already decided does not matter. He said Zoe's illness was God's way of keeping me occupied while he moved on.
I signed the papers. I left. I did not let him see me break.
Fourteen months later my daughter was accepted into the Harlow Foundation's post-cancer program and I walked into that building for her. Not for me. The way I have done everything for six years.
I did not plan for Ethan.
I did not plan for the way he speaks to my daughter before he ever speaks to me, or the way he looks at me like I am something worth being patient for. I did not plan to find out his sister is the woman my husband left me for.
He says he is not going anywhere. I have heard that before. But Ethan Harlow is not Daniel. And I am not the woman who waited in silence anymore. I am just learning what comes next.
Chapter 1
"Bianca. This is Ingrid."
Daniel said it like he was introducing a coworker. Not the hand on her lower back. Not the ring catching the candlelight when she waved at the waiter like she owned the place.
"I don't understand," Bianca said. Her voice came out small. She hated that.
"You will." Daniel pulled out a chair. Not for her. For Ingrid. "Sit down. Let's not make this ugly."
"You brought her here to tell me?"
"I thought it would be easier if you saw the whole picture at once." Calm. Clinical. The same voice he used to explain lab results. "We've been together for three years. We married in Germany in spring."
Bianca's ears started ringing. Somewhere behind her a waiter laughed at something. The world just kept moving like it hadn't ended.
"Three years." Her mouth had gone dry. "Zoe was diagnosed three years ago."
"I know."
"You said residency. You said you couldn't leave her chemo."
"I couldn't." He didn't even flinch. "You were doing fine without me. Better, actually. I think God gave her that illness so you'd stay busy while I figured myself out."
The words hit like a slap that never landed. Just sound. Just heat crawling up her neck.
Ingrid smiled. Small. Satisfied. Like she'd been waiting for this exact moment longer than tonight.
"You knew about the marriage," Bianca said to her. "You knew there was a sick kid at home."
"I knew there was a marriage that had already ended," Ingrid said. "I didn't take anything that was still yours."
Bianca gripped the back of the chair. She was not going to cry in front of this woman. Not here.
"Sign the papers." Daniel slid an envelope across the tablecloth like a bill. "Make it simple. For Zoe."
She looked at it. Then at him. Six years of hospital bills she'd covered alone. Six years of telling her daughter Daddy's working hard for us. Six years believing a lie because the alternative was falling apart in a ward full of sick children who needed her steady.
She picked up the pen and signed without reading it. Her hand didn't shake. She made sure of that.
Then she stood and walked out and didn't look back once. Not even when Ingrid said something low that made Daniel laugh behind her.
The cold hit her like water.
She made it half a block before her legs stopped agreeing to hold her up. She grabbed the wall of the building beside her and let one silent breath tear out of her chest.
"Careful."
A hand caught her elbow before she knew she'd stumbled into someone.
She looked up. Dark eyes found hers and held on a second longer than they should have. Warm hand, steady grip, like he'd caught someone falling before and knew exactly how much pressure not to use.
Her whole body reacted before her brain caught up, a jolt of something that had nothing to do with the last twenty minutes and everything to do with the way he was still holding her arm like letting go wasn't a priority yet.
"I'm sorry," she said, automatic.
"You're apologizing for almost face-planting into a stranger." Dry. Not quite a joke. The corner of his mouth moved like it wanted to smile and thought better of it. "Are you alright?"
Nobody had asked her that tonight. Not once.
"No," she said, honest for the first time all night. "Not even a little."
He didn't tell her it would be fine. He just stood there, still holding her arm a beat longer than he needed to, and something in her chest loosened half an inch.
"I'm Ethan."
"Bianca." Saying it out loud steadied her more than it should have.
He let go of her arm slowly, like he was checking she could actually stand before he did. She felt the absence of his hand more than she wanted to admit, a small cold patch where warmth had just been.
Stop it, she told herself. You just signed divorce papers twenty minutes ago. This is not the night to notice a man's hands.
"You've got mascara halfway down your face," he said, gentler than the words sounded. "For what it's worth, you're still the best-looking disaster I've seen all week."
A laugh cracked out of her before she could stop it. Small. Surprised. The first real sound she'd made all night that wasn't pain.
"That's a terrible thing to say to someone having the worst night of her life."
"Probably." His eyes didn't leave her face. "Worked though."
"You're very sure of yourself."
"Only about the important things." A ghost of a smile now, fully there this time. "Making a stranger laugh on the worst night of her life. I'd call that important."
She looked at him properly then. Tall, tired around the eyes in a way that had nothing to do with tonight, watching her like she was the only thing in the street worth looking at. It had been a long time since anyone looked at her like that. Daniel hadn't, not in years, maybe not ever, not the way this stranger just had in under two minutes on a freezing sidewalk.
She hated how much she wanted him to keep looking.
Don't do this, a voice in her said, the same one that had gotten her through six years alone. You don't know him. You don't know anyone. Trusting a face is how you ended up signing that envelope tonight.
She believed the voice. She just didn't move away.
His phone buzzed. He glanced at it and his jaw went tight, whatever warmth had been in his face folding away fast, like a door closing on a room she'd only just been let into.
"Work emergency," he said. "Family meeting tomorrow I have to run myself now. Kids' program at the foundation." He looked back at her, reluctant, like he didn't actually want to be the one to end this. "Bad timing."
"Story of my night."
He didn't move to leave yet. Neither did she. The street was empty and cold and neither of them seemed to be in any hurry to remember that.
"I don't usually do this," he said. "Talk to strangers on street corners."
"Neither do I." That part, at least, was true. She'd built six years out of not doing this, not one single time, and here she was doing it twenty minutes after a divorce.
"Good," he said. "Means it counts for something."
Her phone buzzed then, cutting straight through whatever was about to happen next. She pulled it out, expecting Kemi, already building the lie she'd tell her sister about being fine.
It wasn't Kemi. Unknown number. A message already lit up on the screen.
I saw everything tonight. The papers. The restaurant. All of it.
Stay away from my brother, or your daughter loses her spot in that program tomorrow morning.
Bianca's head snapped up.
Ethan was still standing close enough that she could feel the warmth off him in the cold air, still watching her the way he had a minute ago like nothing else existed, completely unaware that the woman who'd just threatened her daughter was the same woman whose ring had caught the candlelight ten minutes ago.

I’ve spent my life taking care of everyone else. So when my baby brother is taken, I don’t hesitate. I walk straight into a faerie mansion and make a bargain with its infuriatingly charming master.
Kie is everything you’d expect from a dangerous fae, beautiful, political, and entirely too amused by me. Power wrapped in a smirk. Sensual, mischievous, and far too aware of the effect he has on people. He agrees to help me find my brother.
For a price.
Now I’m bound by a faerie bargain and navigating a world of glamour, manipulation, and ancient rules I definitely should have learned sooner, enchanted forests, political games, magical contracts, and a fae lord who treats seduction like a perfectly reasonable negotiation tactic.
Iron is how I keep people out.
Glamour is how he draws them in.
And apparently, they just don’t mix.
