Introduction

For three years, I lived like a bird trapped in the gilded cage of Mafia don Victor Russo. Beneath every kiss and calculated caress, I bided my time. I had grown to love him, lost in the warmth of his affection.

But when I finally learned I was nothing more than a stand-in for his beloved Elaina, I struck back. I drained eighty million dollars from his accounts and fled to Europe. There, I chased down every lead I had uncovered and built a security empire of my own.

I never imagined a deadly conspiracy would drag me back to New York — and straight back to Victor. Revenge is within my grasp, yet that reckless, all-consuming love still lingers. And I don’t know which path to choose.

Chapter 1

I had been a dutiful kept woman sexy body, sweet temper, big breasts, empty head. That had been the role.

Victor Russo, the New York mafia don, had kept me in his top-floor penthouse for three full years. Until the day I had overheard him talking to Luca.

“Boss, Irina’s coming back next week. What do we do with the stand-in?”

“Just a stand-in. Same rule as always. Give her money and send her away.”

So I had been a discounted substitute. The white moonlight had been returning, and my place in this apartment had been getting cleared out.

What they hadn’t known was that I hadn’t stayed for his money.

Three years had been enough. The threads had been almost in my hand. It had been time to leave.

The words I had heard had replayed in my head on a vicious loop, and my heart had beaten too hard, too fast.

Three years. Victor’s “devotion” had been a rehearsal from start to finish. In his eyes, I had been a toy he could set down whenever he got bored.

I had slipped back into the walk-in closet and stared at the wall of couture, diamonds, and watches. The fog in my chest had thinned by half.

“I had been saving this for three years. It finally got to be useful.”

I had contacted a darknet broker, taken photos, and listed everything in one breath. If it sold, it would pay for London—safe house, new papers, and enough distance to breathe.

Because three years earlier, my parents had died in a gang crossfire. The police had called it an accident. I hadn’t believed them.

My mother had died with a rabbit cake in her hands one she’d bought for me. I had seen the pink box in an evidence bag: the frosting had melted, the smell had gone sour. I had still tasted it. It had been sweet in a sickening way.

I had kept that box and buried it at the bottom of my suitcase, pressed beside a ruby necklace.

Then I had sold myself.

I had put my name into a mafia underground auction, and Victor had bought me like a painting.

For three years, I had worn the face he liked naive, stupid, soft, the kind of girl who couldn’t live without him. And now that he had decided to throw me away because his real love was coming back, I had been ready to finish what I’d come for.

Late that night, Victor had returned with blood on his sleeve and gunpowder in his hair.

I had snapped my laptop shut and turned into a perfect doll. When my fingers had brushed his coat, my body had flinched before my mind could stop it. Three years had trained skin faster than thought.

He hadn’t even looked at my face. He had shoved me against the wall and breathed a command into my mouth.

“Kiss me.”

The kiss had been brutal. My body had softened on instinct, betraying me, meeting him the way it had been trained to. He had thrown me onto the bed like he’d done it a thousand times.

“Three years and you’re still this sensitive.” Victor had laughed low, yanked my nightdress open, and gripped my breast hard. “Say it.”

“Victor…”

Right when my vision had started to blur, he had bitten my earlobe and murmured a name with a tenderness he never used on me.

“Elle…”

My whole body had gone cold.

Three years in his bed, and he had still been calling her.

He had always called me Elle. I had corrected him my name had been Alina. He had only gotten more passionate, smiling like it was an “exclusive pet name.” Now it had sounded like a joke carved into my ribs.

I hadn’t argued. I had taken it and played my part, burying my face in the pillow to swallow the heat in my eyes. I had needed him pleased a little longer. I had needed a bigger “breakup fee.”

When the mess had finally ended, he had fallen asleep fast.

I hadn’t.

I had slid out of bed, taken the keys from his suit pocket, and walked barefoot into his study.

The computer had booted up. My hands had moved without hesitation. I had searched every encrypted folder tied to “Brooklyn” and “1120,” the two numbers I’d chased for years. A progress bar had crawled to seventy-six percent.

Then a voice had sounded behind me clearer than sleep, colder than I wanted.

“Alina?”

My blood had iced.

I had ripped the USB out and shoved it into the pocket of my nightdress, flicked the screen into standby, and slipped out of the study like a shadow.

Footsteps had already been coming down the hallway.

So I had chosen offense over retreat.

I had stepped into him, wrapped my arms around his waist, and lifted my face with a sleepy smile.

“What’s wrong, honey? I went to get some water. I didn’t wake you, did I?”

Victor had stopped. His eyes had gone past me to the half-closed study door.

My heart had clenched. I had leaned in closer, breath warm against his throat, and offered him the bait.

“I woke up thirsty. Want a sip too?”

He had pinched my chin, testing me like a dog he didn’t fully trust.

“So good. Why didn’t you wake me?”

“I didn’t want to disturb you.” I had kissed his jaw and used my body to steer him back toward the bedroom.

He hadn’t looked at the study again. He’d let me guide him, his arm sliding around me out of habit, heavy and possessive.

I had stood stiff in his hold, counting my heartbeat like seconds on a bomb. For the first time in three years, the penthouse had felt like a freezer.

Morning had come too bright.

My waist had ached when I’d sat up. Victor had stood by the bed buttoning his shirt. He’d glanced at his phone, and when he’d looked back, his gaze had already turned sharp.

I had reached to straighten his tie.

He had stepped back.

“Don’t touch me.”

My hand had frozen in midair. I’d let hurt bloom on my face right on schedule.

“Victor, why are you like this?”

He’d pulled a black card from his wallet and tossed it onto the bed like a tip.

“Payment for last night.”

I’d held it with trembling fingers, eyes wet, mouth parted perfect. Inside, I’d been calculating how many days in London that would buy and how much extra it would cost to cash out without leaving a trail.

Cheap. He’d been a mafia king and he still hated paying full price.

Victor had scoffed and turned for the door.

“There’s a banquet tonight. Dress up.”

The door had shut.

Silence had filled the room like smoke.

My encrypted messenger had lit up. The London contact I’d bribed months ago had finally replied with two words.

Wait for you.

I had stared at my reflection and chosen the reddest dress in the closet blood-red, too loud, too sharp. The kind of color that made men forget to think.

“Victor,” I had whispered to the mirror, voice sweet as poison, “let me dance one last dance with you.”
