Introduction

inherited my grandmother’s charming little inn in the English countryside, expecting a quiet life far away from everyone.
Instead, I discovered six ghosts living inside it.
They cook my breakfast, rearrange the furniture, scare my guests—and apparently have decided that finding me a husband is their new favorite hobby.
Then Caspian Thorne checks in.
He’s handsome, mysterious, and far too comfortable around the dead.
Because unlike every other living guest, Caspian can see my ghosts too.
The ghosts adore him.
Unfortunately, so do I.
But Caspian didn’t come to my inn by accident. He’s searching for a secret my grandmother took to her grave—a secret connected to the six spirits who have been trapped here for decades.
Just when I begin to wonder if the mysterious necromancer might be the one person I can trust, one of my ghosts disappears.
No farewell.
No trace.
Not even Caspian can find her.
And suddenly, I’m beginning to wonder if the ghosts were never trapped in my inn…
Maybe they were being protected here.

Chapter 1

Maribel’s POV

The rain hit the windshield like it had a grudge. The lane narrowed. Hedgerows slapped the car. Then the sign came out of the dark in wet gold paint.

The Wren & Willow Inn.

I parked too close to the wall and sat there until the heat died. The plan was simple. Inherit the inn. Hide. Sleep. Be left alone.

Grandmother Honoria had handled the first part without asking. The rest was supposed to be mine.

The front door stuck, then gave way. Stone, old wood, wet wool. I stepped inside, shut the rain out, and listened.

Nothing.

Good.

I dropped my bag by the umbrella stand—already holding two umbrellas I had not brought—and toed off my shoes. The lobby lamp was on, low and yellow, as if someone had expected me and gotten tired of waiting.

“Hello?” I said.

The house did not answer. That felt correct.

I found the hall switch. More lamps. More shadows that turned into furniture when I stared. A clock on the landing had stopped. I did not wind it. Winding things felt like agreeing to stay.

The kitchen light was the problem.

It should not have been on.

A warm line showed under the door, gold on the flagstones. I stood in the hall with my coat dripping and considered the sensible options. Sleep in the car. Drive back to the village. Take the room above the pub from the woman who had already decided I would sell by winter.

I opened the kitchen door.

Heat hit me first. Butter. Sugar. A tray just out of the oven. A woman stood at the table with flour on her wrists, cutting scones. Soft face. Firm mouth. Apron the color of tea stains. Hair pinned up like she had done it in the dark and gotten it right anyway.

She looked up.

She did not scream.

“You’re late,” she said.

“Late for what?”

She sighed. “Breakfast, obviously.”

I laughed once. “It’s almost midnight.”

“Then you’re later than I thought. Don’t drip on my floor, love. There are hooks by the door for a reason.”

I stayed in the doorway. “Who are you?”

“Bea. Beatrice if you’re in a mood. You’re not, I hope. Honoria said you ran toward moods instead of away from them.”

The name landed wrong. People had been saying my grandmother at me for two weeks. None of them had said it while cutting scones in a kitchen that was supposed to be empty.

“Honoria’s dead.”

“I know. Eat something before you fall over. You look like a letter left in the rain.”

“I’m not hungry.”

“That’s a lie people tell when they want to win an argument with food. Sit.”

“I didn’t hire you.”

“No.”

“I didn’t call anyone.”

“Also no.”

“Then you need to leave.”

Bea looked at me over the tray, unimpressed. “I need to take the second batch out in four minutes. After that we can discuss your manners.”

I stepped in because standing in the door felt like losing. I watched her chest. I watched her mouth. People breathe. Even calm people breathe.

I did not see it.

“There’s no steam from your mouth.”

“It’s a warm kitchen.”

“It’s not that warm.”

She glanced at the black window. “You’re going to be difficult. She warned me.”

“Don’t talk about her like she’s in the next room.”

“She isn’t. She’s gone. That does not mean the work stopped.”

I touched the nearest scone before I could stop myself.

Hot. Not memory-hot. Hot enough that I pulled my fingers back and hissed.

Bea made a small sound of satisfaction. “Good. You’re not entirely imaginary. I was beginning to worry.”

“I’m not the imaginary one.”

“If you say so.”

I turned in a circle. No phone filming this. No second door. The pantry stood open on jars and tea tins. The sink held a bowl with batter still clinging to the side.

“This is a joke. Someone from the village. The woman with the casserole. She said Honoria was odd.”

“Mrs. Pell puts too much nutmeg in things and thinks grief looks like a covered dish. She is not funny enough for this.”

“Then who paid you?”

“Nobody pays me.”

“Everyone gets paid.”

Bea wiped her hands on her apron. The flour did not sit quite right on the cloth, as if the light had not agreed how to hold her.

“I cook,” she said. “I have cooked in this kitchen longer than you have been alive, Maribel Bellrose, and I will cook in it after you learn to hang your coat. That is the arrangement.”

“I didn’t agree to an arrangement.”

“You inherited one. Sit down before your knees make the decision for you.”

I sat because my knees were considering it.

“How do you know my name?”

“Honoria talked. Not enough, near the end. Enough.”

“If you knew her, you would have come to the funeral.”

Bea’s mouth tightened. “I came as far as I could. Eat.”

“I don’t want a scone.”

“I didn’t ask what you wanted.”

I picked one up. It broke the way a good scone should. I ate two bites out of spite and then because it was excellent and I hated that.

“These are good.”

“I know.”

“That wasn’t a compliment.”

“It was. You just said it like an insult. Family talent.”

I set the rest down. “If you’re a cook she hid in the attic, you can stay the night. In the morning I’m calling someone. A doctor. The police. A priest. I haven’t decided who deserves this first.”

“A priest will want tea and a story. The police will want a crime. A doctor will shine a light in your eyes and tell you grief does strange things. None of them will want my scones, which tells you all you need to know about experts.”

“You can’t talk to me like that. This is my house.”

“It is the inn. You may live in it. That is not the same as it being only yours.”

The range ticked. Rain needled the glass.

“What do you want from me?”

“Eat. Sleep. Don’t sell the place to the first man who calls it charming. And in the morning, be on time.”

“On time for what?”

“Breakfast. Guests will come. They always come. The rooms know how to be empty. They do not know how to stay that way.”

“There are no guests.”

Bea looked toward the hall, as if she could see weather through walls. “There will be.”

A man’s voice carried from the lobby, crisp enough to cut the heat in half.

“Miss Bellrose. The umbrella stand is not a coat rack.”

I froze.

Bea did not.

“That’ll be Ambrose. He has been dying to say that since you walked in.”

“I haven’t hired a man named Ambrose.”

“No. You haven’t.”

I stood so fast the chair scraped. “Stay here.”

“I’m not the one wandering off in wet socks.”

The lobby lamp was still burning. My bag was where I had dropped it. My coat was not. It hung from a hook I had not used, dripping neatly onto a tray I had not put down.

“Hello? If this is a staff prank, it stopped being funny in the kitchen.”

No one answered.

“Ambrose,” I said, and felt ridiculous, and said it anyway. “Come out.”

A clock ticked once, loud as a dropped spoon, then went quiet.

I turned back to the kitchen.

Bea was gone.

The range still threw heat. The rack still held scones. A tea towel lay folded over a chair. The second tray sat on the stove, baked, steaming, untouched.

“Bea.”

Nothing.

I opened the pantry. I looked under the table because I had become the kind of adult who looks under tables. Flour on the boards. No woman. No apron. No breath.

The scones were still hot.

“I don’t believe in this,” I told the range.

On the table, where my plate had been, lay a scrap of paper dusted with flour. The handwriting was old and sharp.

Set a place for the storm.

Thunder hit th

e sign outside so hard the windows answered.

At the far end of the table, a clean plate was already waiting.

They were already married for three years when Alpha Damian Zeus’s long-lost first love, Lily, returned bringing along a five-year-old pup.

Luna Ariana Volkstane slid the formal rejection request across the table. "Let's end this bond. It's better for you, me, and your first love."

He just smirked. "You want me to reject you? You think you can break our bond that easily?"

So she did. Ariana cut ties with him completely, poured herself into her career, and rose to global fame as a legendary healer, her knowledge of rare herbs, wolf anatomy, and ancient magic sought after across continents.

The powerful suitors lined up. The Alpha of an overseas empire whispered, "Ariana, hurry up and perform the severing ritual. I can't wait to claim you." A powerful pack leader vowed, "I'll be there with you the day you break the bond." A legendary wolf attorney promised, "I'll handle your rejection case with the pack council myself."

Ariana just rubbed her temples. It's not that she didn't want the split, she wanted it more than anything, it's just that the Alpha she was mated to refused to let go.

Finally, she announced, "Whoever can officially get me rejected, I'll put you at the head table of my bond-breaking celebration."

Not long after, Alpha Damian was served the official rejection request right in the middle of an emergency pack council meeting. That same afternoon, he was attacked by rogues at the gates of his own territory.

When Ariana showed up at the pack infirmary with healing herbs, she repeated calmly, "Let's sever the mate bond. It's better for you, me, and everyone else."

But the cold, untouchable Alpha pulled her into his arms, his eyes blood-red with fury. "You want me to reject you? Over my dead body."
