Introduction

Ava Sinclair spent twenty-four years believing her billionaire father abandoned her. Then he died—and left her everything.

But there's a catch: to inherit the Sinclair empire, Ava must live for one year at Valen Estate with Charles's three adopted sons—men who see her as nothing but a gold-digging intruder threatening their legacy.

Luca, the cold CEO who built the company and despises her on sight. Noah, the charming playboy hiding a painful addiction. Kieran, the quiet tech genius who seems to be the only one on her side.

As Ava searches for answers about why her father abandoned her, she discovers Charles didn't die of a heart attack—he was murdered. And the truth behind his death is buried in a conspiracy called Project Helix, one that threatens to destroy everyone she's beginning to care about.

Now Ava must navigate dangerous secrets, corporate conspiracies, and her growing feelings for the brothers—especially Luca, the man who should be her enemy but might be her only ally.

Someone in the house wants her gone. And they'll kill to keep the past buried.

Chapter 1

The law office smelled like old leather and secrets.

"I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" Her voice came out sharper than intended.

Marcus adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his expression carefully neutral. "Your father, Charles Sinclair, has named you the primary beneficiary of his estate. The entirety of Sinclair Holdings—valued at approximately 3.2 billion dollars—now belongs to you."

Ava Sinclair sat rigid in the chair across from Marcus Whitmore, senior partner at Whitmore & Associates, her fingers digging into the armrest hard enough to leave marks. The lawyer's voice droned on about assets and estates, but all she could hear was the thundering of her own pulse.

The words hung in the air like smoke.

Your father.

Ava's jaw tightened. Charles Sinclair wasn't her father. Fathers showed up to school plays. Fathers called on birthdays. Fathers didn't abandon their daughters to grow up in a cramped apartment while their mother worked three jobs just to keep the lights on.

"There must be a mistake." She forced the words through clenched teeth. "Charles Sinclair had no daughter. Ask anyone."

"Nevertheless—" Marcus slid a manila folder across the polished mahogany desk. "The DNA test confirms it. You are his biological child, Ms. Sinclair. And according to his will, executed three weeks before his death, you are his sole heir."

Ava stared at the folder like it might bite her. Inside would be proof—scientific, irrefutable proof—that the man who'd walked out on her mother twenty years ago had been thinking about her at the end. The irony tasted like ash.

"Why?" The question escaped before she could stop it. "Why now? Why me?"

Marcus's expression softened slightly, the first crack in his professional facade. "I wish I could tell you. Charles was... a complicated man. But he was very specific about his wishes."

"Of course he was." Ava laughed, but there was no humor in it. She'd spent years building walls around the wounded little girl who'd waited by the window for a father who never came. And now, from beyond the grave, Charles Sinclair was trying to tear them down.

"There's more." Marcus hesitated, and something in that pause made Ava's stomach drop. "The inheritance comes with conditions."

"Naturally." She crossed her arms. "Let me guess—I have to dance on his grave? Pretend he was father of the year?"

"You must live at Valen Estate for one full year."

The room seemed to tilt. "What?"

"Valen Estate. The family home." Marcus pulled out another document, this one thick with legal jargon. "You'll reside there for twelve consecutive months. During that time, you're expected to integrate into the Sinclair family and participate in company affairs."

"Family?" Ava's voice rose. "What family? He abandoned his real family!"

"His... other family." Marcus cleared his throat uncomfortably. "Charles had three adopted sons. Luca, Noah, and Kieran. They've lived at the estate for years. The will specifies that you must cohabitate with them and—" he consulted the document, "—demonstrate a good-faith effort to honor Charles's vision of family unity."

The absurdity of it all crashed over her like a wave. Charles Sinclair, who couldn't be bothered to send a birthday card, had built himself a replacement family. Three sons he'd chosen, raised, given his name to. While she and her mother had struggled and scraped and survived on their own.

"And if I refuse?"

"The estate passes to a trust controlled by the three brothers. You receive nothing."

Nothing. After everything, she'd still have nothing. Just like always.

Ava stood abruptly, the chair scraping against hardwood. She moved to the window overlooking downtown Seattle, watching people hurry past on the street below. Normal people with normal problems. None of them were being asked to live with strangers who had every reason to hate them.

"What do they think about this?" she asked quietly. "These... brothers."

Marcus's silence was answer enough.

"They don't want me there."

"The will was a surprise to everyone, Ms. Sinclair. Charles kept your existence very private. His sons are... processing the news."

Processing. Such a sterile word for what must be rage, confusion, betrayal. She knew those feelings intimately.

"Why would he do this?" Ava pressed her forehead against the cool glass. "If he wanted nothing to do with me for twenty-four years, why drag me into his world now?"

"I don't have that answer." Marcus's voice was gentle. "But I knew Charles for thirty years. Whatever his reasons, he believed this was important. Important enough to risk everything he'd built."

Ava closed her eyes. Her mother's face swam up from memory—tired eyes, work-worn hands, a smile that never quite reached the sadness beneath. Eleanor Sinclair had loved Charles once, had believed in him. And he'd destroyed her.

The smart thing would be to walk away. To tell Marcus Whitmore and his manila folders and his billions of dollars to go to hell. To keep living her quiet life, teaching piano to neighborhood kids, existing in the small, safe world she'd built.

But curiosity was a vicious thing.

Why had Charles left them? Why had he stayed away? And why, after all this time, was he forcing her back into his life—or what remained of it?

"The year starts when?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"You can move in as early as this weekend. The staff has been notified."

Ava turned from the window, meeting Marcus's gaze. In his eyes, she saw something unexpected: pity.

"I need to think about it."

"Of course. But Ms. Sinclair?" Marcus stood, gathering his papers with practiced efficiency. "Whatever you decide, decide quickly. Charles's will stipulates that you must begin residency within two weeks of notification, or the inheritance is forfeit."

Of course it did. Even dead, Charles Sinclair was pulling strings, manipulating outcomes, controlling lives.

Ava took the folder, its weight somehow heavier than paper should be. Inside was a key card, an address in the wealthy Highlands neighborhood, and a single photograph paperclipped to the DNA results.

The photo showed three men on the steps of a sprawling estate. One dark-haired and severe in a tailored suit. Another with an easy smile and careless charm. The third, slightly apart from the others, watching the camera with unreadable eyes.

Her brothers. Or rather, Charles's real children. The ones he'd chosen.

And now she was supposed to live with them, play house in their dead father's mansion, pretend they were all one big happy family.

"Ms. Sinclair?" Marcus prompted. "Will you accept the terms?"

Ava stared at the photo, at the three strangers who shared her father but not her blood, who'd had everything she'd been denied. Anger coiled in her chest, hot and familiar. But beneath it, that treacherous curiosity whispered its poison.

Why? Why did he leave? Why did he come back?

Only one way to find out.

"I'll move in this weekend," she said, her voice steady despite the chaos inside. "Tell them to prepare a room."

As she walked out of the office into the gray Seattle afternoon, Ava Sinclair made herself a promise: she would spend one year in Charles Sinclair's world. She would uncover the truth he'd hidden. And when it was over, she would finally be free of him.

She just had to survive twelve months with the family that had taken her place.

How hard could it be?

I shivered.

Alyssa Reynolds found herself in a situation, while returning home from work, and she had three choices:

Simply walk away and forget that you ever heard the sound of wailing infants.

Call the police and inform them about the innocent wails.

Being a kindhearted soul and a sucker for babies, she found herself choosing the third option, finding the two little lives.

Two little lives that changed her whole life, her love life included. Her life now revolved around the babies as diapers, vomit and shit seemed to surround her.

"How thoughtful."
"Bella." Ethan's tone shifted, taking on that warning edge I knew too well. "Faye is vulnerable right now. She's terrified you'll resent her, that this will divide the pack. The last thing she wants is for this baby to come between us."
"Then you shouldn't have done it." I met his eyes squarely, letting him see the ice in mine. "Go back to your son."
"For fuck's sake." He dragged a hand through his hair. "How many times—it was artificial insemination. They used my sperm, yes, but Faye and I never—"
Bella let out a cold snort. Such brazen lies. Her mate had an affair with his brother's partner, and his entire family helped force her out with nothing, all to make way for the mistress to take her rightful position. Poor fool—he thought she was just an unwanted adopted daughter, easy to dismiss and control. He never knew the computer genius he'd been searching for was his own Luna.
Since he'd tainted himself, Bella was done. She rejected him and reclaimed what was hers, rising to the top with help from Victor, who'd been secretly in love with her for years.
When Ethan tried winning her back: "You don't want our child growing up fatherless."
Bella smiled mockingly. "The child's father isn't you."
