Chapter 1
Sarah
The diner smelled like bacon grease and stale coffee, and I had learned to love it.
Not because the food was particularly good, it wasn't—but because the smells meant I was earning a paycheck. The morning rush had finally tapered off, leaving behind a comfortable lull that allowed me to catch my breath and survey the dining room. Most of my tables were content, their plates half-empty and their coffee cups steaming. An elderly couple in the corner booth shared a slice of pie with the careful precision of people who had been married for decades. A pair of truckers near the window laughed at something on a phone screen, their voices carrying across the linoleum floor in that easy way men had when they weren't worried about being overheard.
I allowed myself a moment of stillness, pressing my palms flat against the counter and inhaling deeply. The normalcy of it all felt like a fragile thing, something I had learned to appreciate in the way one appreciated a sunny day after a week of storms. For a few precious hours, I could pretend my life was as simple as pouring coffee and wiping down tables.
That illusion shattered the moment the bell above the door chimed.
I didn't need to look up to know who had walked in. I could feel the shift in the air, the way conversations seemed to dim just slightly, as though the room itself recognized the intrusion. My fingers tightened around the handle of the coffee pot as I forced myself to take a slow, steadying breath.
Please don't let it be him.
But when I finally lifted my gaze, my worst fears were confirmed. Marcus stood just inside the doorway, his familiar smirk spreading across his face as his eyes found mine. He was dressed in his usual uniform of dark jeans and a leather jacket, his dark hair carefully styled to look effortlessly disheveled. To anyone else, he might have appeared handsome, charming even. I knew better. I had spent eighteen months learning exactly what lay beneath that carefully constructed facade, and the knowledge made my stomach turn.
"There she is," Marcus said, spreading his arms wide as though he expected me to rush into them. "The most beautiful woman in all of Arizona. I was starting to think you'd forgotten about me."
I set the coffee pot down on the counter with more force than necessary, the ceramic clinking loudly against the metal surface. I could feel the eyes of my customers on me now, their curiosity burning against my skin. The last thing I wanted was to make a scene, but I also knew from bitter experience that Marcus wouldn't leave simply because I asked him to.
"What are you doing here, Marcus?" I asked, keeping my voice low and steady. "I'm working."
"I can see that." He stepped further into the diner, his gaze sweeping over the room with casual arrogance. "I just thought I'd come by and see how my girl was doing. It's been a while since we talked."
"I'm not your girl," I said flatly. "We broke up months ago. I've told you this repeatedly. Now, if you're not going to order something, I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
Marcus's expression flickered just for a moment before the charming smile returned. But I had seen the flash of anger beneath it and I knew I was treading dangerous ground. I had learned to read his moods the way sailors learned to read the sky, searching for signs of the storms that could erupt without warning.
"Come on, Sarah," he said, his voice dropping to a tone that was meant to sound reasonable but only made my skin crawl. "Don't be like this. We had something real, you and me. Something special. You can't just throw that away because of one little misunderstanding."
"There was no misunderstanding," I said, my voice hardening. "I told you I was done, and I meant it. I don't want to see you anymore. I don't want to talk to you. I want you to leave me alone."
I turned away from him, intending to retreat to the kitchen and put as much distance between us as possible. But Marcus moved faster than I expected, his hand closing around my wrist with a grip that was just shy of painful.
"Sarah, wait—"
"Let go of me." My voice came out sharper than I intended, loud enough that several nearby customers turned to stare. I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks, the humiliation of being manhandled in front of an audience mixing with the familiar fear that had become my constant companion over the past few months.
"I just want to talk to you," Marcus said, his grip tightening. "Five minutes. That's all I'm asking. Five minutes, and then I'll leave you alone."
"You said that last time," I reminded him, trying to pull my arm free. "And the time before that. And the time before that. Every time I give you five minutes, you find a reason to come back. I'm done, Marcus. I'm done."
The bell above the door chimed again, and I felt a fresh wave of dread wash over me. The last thing I needed was for this scene to escalate further, for someone to call the police, for the whole town to witness my humiliation. But when I glanced toward the entrance, I saw not another customer but my coworker, Darlene, returning from her break.
Darlene took one look at the situation and immediately understood. She had been working at the diner for nearly thirty years, and she had seen more than her fair share of troublesome customers. Without a word, she crossed the room and positioned herself at my side, her expression hard as flint.
"I believe the lady asked you to leave," Darlene said, her voice carrying the kind of authority that came from decades of dealing with difficult people.
"This doesn't concern you," Marcus snapped, his mask of charm finally slipping to reveal the ugliness beneath.
"Actually, it does," Darlene replied calmly. "Sarah is my friend, and you're causing a disturbance in our establishment. Either you leave now, or I'm calling the police. Your choice."
For a long, tense moment, Marcus stared at Darlene with an expression that made my blood run cold. I had seen that look before—the one that promised retribution, that hinted at violence waiting just beneath the surface. But Darlene didn't flinch, didn't back down. She simply stood there, her hand resting on the phone behind the counter, waiting.
Finally, Marcus released my wrist with a muttered curse.
"This isn't over," he said, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made me want to run and hide. "You hear me? This isn't over."
I watched him walk out of the diner, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. The bell chimed one final time as the door swung shut behind him, and the normal sounds of the restaurant slowly began to return—the clink of silverware, the murmur of conversation, the soft hum of the refrigerators in the kitchen.
But I didn't hear any of it. I stood frozen in place, my wrist still tingling from where Marcus's fingers had gripped it, my mind racing with the familiar question that had haunted me for months: How do I make him stop?
Darlene's hand on my shoulder brought me back to the present.
"Come on," the older woman said gently. "Let's get you in the back for a minute. You need to sit down."
I allowed myself to be led into the kitchen, my legs feeling unsteady beneath me. The cook, a gruff man named Frank who had never shown me anything but kindness, took one look at my face and immediately began preparing a cup of tea.
"That's the ex, isn't it?" he asked, his voice rough but gentle. "The one you told us about?"
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.
"You need to go to the police," Darlene said, pulling a chair over and guiding me into it. "I know you said they haven't done anything, but you have to keep trying. You have to document everything, every time he shows up, every threat he makes. Eventually, they'll have to listen."
"I've tried," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I've filed three reports. They keep telling me there's nothing they can do unless he actually hurts me."

Everyone expects Atreus to treat his fiancée’s scholarship sister like everyone else does—as if she doesn’t matter.

His.
He doesn't know he's writing to her, either.
By the time they find out, it's too late to stop what's already happening. Far too dangerous for anyone to find out.
In an empty studio, in the middle of a rainstorm, she asks him: 'Am I the kind of girl who kisses a boy engaged to my sister?'
He doesn't answer.
So she asks: 'What are we?’
He told her not to fall in love with one piece.
She fell anyway.
And he was never far behind.

He moaned against my throat as he drank, and the sound was devastating.

He leaves me with his business card and a smile that makes my knees weak.
I'm still pinching myself as me and the bestie resume our walk.
“Methinks you had a little crush on him,” she accuses.
Not thinking and a little flustered by the whole experience, I reply, “I’d wrap my legs around his waist tighter than that leash.”
THAT'S when she reveals that she'd been recording my response.
THAT'S when she gives me the most devilish grin I've ever seen and says, “You're welcome.”
And THAT'S when she hands me my phone and reveals...
She sent the recording to him.
My heart is in my throat as those three little dots appear…
