Introduction

After more than twenty years of life, I finally learned that I wasn’t my parents’ biological daughter.
They couldn’t wait to send me back to the family everyone said was poor and run-down.
But sitting in an antique car that looked like it might fall apart at any moment, I stared at the mansion in front of me—something straight out of a palace—and rubbed my chin.
So this is what they call a hard life?

Chapter 1

"Take your stuff and get out!"

Grace Hernandez stood at the door, hands on her hips. She kicked the black garbage bags at her feet, sending them tumbling down the front steps.

The cheap plastic split open on impact. Clothes, books, and random keepsakes spilled across the concrete.

A notebook landed face-down in a puddle. Muddy water soaked the pages, bleeding the ink into blurry smudges.

Eleanor Mitchell’s back remained perfectly straight. She stared at the ruined mess of her life, her fingers clenched so tight her knuckles turned white.

That mud-stained notebook had been a gift from Grace for winning a ninth-grade writing contest. Eleanor had cherished it ever since.

Looking at it now, she realized how pathetic she’d been. Clinging to tiny, fake scraps of a mother's love.

"Are you deaf?" When Eleanor didn't respond, Grace's voice sharpened into a shriek. "I raised you for fifteen years! Now that my real daughter is back, you're still hanging around? You actually think you belong in this family? You've stolen her place long enough. It's time to go!"

"And remember—from today on, your last name is Mitchell. Not Brown!"

Soft footsteps echoed from the foyer. The Browns' true heiress, Sophia Brown, drifted out in a pristine white dress. She stood beside Grace, gently tugging her sleeve.

"Mom, don't say that to Eleanor. It isn't her fault. She's a victim, too. She must be feeling terrible right now..."

Grace looked at her real daughter. The harshness in her face melted into pure affection. She patted Sophia's hand. "Sweet girl, you're just too forgiving. If it weren't for her, you wouldn't have suffered all those years."

Eleanor watched their sickeningly sweet mother-daughter act. Her heart felt like it was being pierced by a thousand tiny needles.

She’d foolishly believed fifteen years meant something. That even without blood ties, her adoptive parents held some affection for her. She’d been lying to herself.

"Eleanor, Mom's just tough on the outside. Don't take it to heart." Sophia’s tone was gentle, but her eyes glittered with undisguised smugness.

Eleanor’s lips curved into a cold smile. Over the past few days, she’d learned exactly who Sophia was—a two-faced snake. She played the sweet victim while secretly manipulating her parents into kicking Eleanor out.

Eleanor had only stayed this long holding onto a sliver of hope. Instead, she got a public humiliation.

Footsteps sounded again. Jack Brown strode out from the living room. He held a bank card, casually tossing it onto the steps.

"There's ten thousand dollars on that card. Consider it severance. We raised you, so we've done our part."

The plastic hit the concrete with a sharp clack.

Eleanor stared at it. She remembered how Jack used to stand at this exact door, waiting for her after school. She would run into his arms, clinging to his hand. Back then, that hand had felt so big. So warm.

Now, that same hand had tossed her aside like garbage. The warmth was entirely gone.

Her nose stung. Her fingernails dug into her palms, biting deep enough to draw blood. She stood frozen.

Grace let out a cruel laugh. "What, not enough for you? The truth is, we already found your real parents. They're deadbeats living on welfare. A crippled brother at home, and a pile of debt you wouldn't believe."

"If you don't take this money, you're going to starve!"

Eleanor finally looked up. Every trace of emotion had died in her eyes, replaced by a dark, bottomless cold. The sheer ice in her gaze sent an involuntary shiver down Grace's spine.

"I'll leave." Her voice was dead flat. "From now on, I have nothing to do with this family."

She crouched down and began gathering her scattered life. Shoe prints stained her clothes. Mud ruined her books. She smoothed them out, one by one, and shoved them back into the torn bags.

Her hand paused on the ruined notebook. A photo had slipped out—a family picture of the three of them at her high school graduation.

She stood in the middle, eyes bright and smiling. That day, she had felt loved.

Grace scoffed and turned to go inside, but Sophia was already gliding down the steps.

"Sis, let me help you." Sophia picked up the bank card. She gently tucked it into Eleanor's coat pocket. "This is from Mom and Dad. Just take it. The real world is hard—you'll need the money."

But her hand lingered in the pocket. When she pulled it out, her fingers pinched a small hair clip.

Shaped like a ginkgo leaf and encrusted with tiny diamonds, it caught the afternoon sun.

"What's this?" Sophia gasped, covering her mouth in exaggerated shock. "Isn't this... the clip Mom and Dad gave me?"

Grace recognized it instantly. It was Sophia's birthday gift—a custom luxury piece worth over a hundred thousand dollars.

"Eleanor! How shameless are you?" Grace shrieked, her face twisting in disgust. "Stealing from us on your way out?!"

Jack's expression darkened. He stared at Eleanor, his eyes heavy with utter disappointment.

Sophia bit her lip. Tears welled in her eyes. "Eleanor... if you liked it, you could've just asked. I would have given it to you. You didn't have to steal it."

Neighbors were already poking their heads out, their whispers carrying across the lawn.

"A thief? She always seemed like such a good kid..."

"Bad blood shows. You just can't trust an outsider."

"Look at Sophia. Such a sweet, forgiving girl."

Eleanor listened to the venomous whispers. She looked at Sophia's perfectly tear-stained face. And then, she laughed.

She had never touched that clip. There was only one answer: Sophia had planted it in her pocket just now.

Eleanor's laughter was sharp. "You should be an actress, Sophia. What a waste of talent."

She snatched the hair clip, threw it onto the concrete, and ground her shoe into it. "This cheap trash? It's not worth stealing. I wouldn't want it."

Grace’s face flushed purple. "You wouldn't want it? We paid for everything you own! You think you're too good for us? Who gave you the right to act so superior?"

Eleanor met her glare, her voice dropping to a glacial chill. "You paid for my expenses? Don't forget who's been making money for the Brown Group. You kept me fed as a child, yes. But I’ve paid that debt back tenfold."

The Brown Group used to be a failing startup. Under Eleanor's management, it had skyrocketed and was preparing to go public.

"You bitch!" Grace raised her hand to strike her. "Stop talking nonsense! My family's money was never yours!"

Eleanor dodged the slap, but her foot snagged on a scattered book. She lost her balance, crashing hard onto the pavement.

Agony flared in her palm. The rough gravel sliced her skin open. Blood welled up, dripping onto the concrete in dark, sprawling crimson stains.

Grace looked down at her with a vicious sneer. "Serves you right! That’s karma!"

Jack just stood there. He watched her bleed with the cold, detached gaze of a total stranger.

Suddenly, the torn flesh on her hand felt like nothing. She lowered her head, a bitter, self-deprecating smile tugging her lips.

She had actually harbored the fantasy that they cared. She had been such a fool.

"Sis, are you okay? Please don't blame Mom, she's just upset." Sophia stepped forward, feigning concern. She leaned down as if to help Eleanor up. But as she drew close, her whisper dripped with pure, smug malice.

"Oh, by the way. October second is my engagement party with Ethan. You should definitely come."

Another brutal blade twisted in Eleanor's heart.

Ethan. Ethan Martinez. Her childhood sweetheart. Her fiancé.

Now, he was marrying Sophia.

Eleanor slowly lifted her eyes. The last ember of warmth in her soul died, leaving nothing but absolute ice.
