Outsider · Ongoing · 35.1k Words
Introduction
Give her a home. Give her money. Give her a title.
She would never leave.
He was wrong.
After five years of being locked away every full moon, ignored at every celebration, and quietly replaced by the woman his Pack adored, Nessa finally stops asking for her husband’s love.
She has a new destination: Silverhollow.
A new name to write.
And no reason to look back.
Chapter 1
Nessa's POV
The sixtieth jar. I lifted it out of the box and felt the thin layer of wax still sealed across the lid—Silverhollow's Cedar Ash, packed dense, smelling of charred wood and an old wardrobe left out in the rain.
The sixtieth jar. Five years. Sixty full moons, not one missed.
Was I supposed to be moved by that? I thought about it for a moment. No.
Cedar Ash was a masking agent, nothing more. When wolves read each other, what they're reading is wolf—something alive, breathing, with heat and temper behind it. I had none of that. There was nothing on me to read. So every month, the day before the full moon, Rune would set a fresh jar on my dressing table and say, this will make things easier for you. For five years I had believed him. I had genuinely believed him, had even found it thoughtful—a man as busy as an Alpha, remembering something so small, every single month, must mean he held some place for me in his mind. Some small, quiet place.
God, I was something.
I twisted the lid open, dipped my fingertip in, and worked the ash into my collarbone, watching myself in the mirror as I did. My eyes traveled up without meaning to, to the left side of my neck.
Empty. Not faded, not faint—empty. That patch of skin looked exactly as it had when I was nineteen: smooth, clean, white enough to hurt the eye. Five years and it hadn't changed by a single shade.
Everyone in the Pack looked there first. Not out of malice—it was instinct, the same way humans look at a face before anything else. They would glance at my neck, and for half a second, maybe less, something would pass through their expression. Then they would smile, call me Luna, lower their eyes in deference.
I had understood that half-second since year one. It meant: oh, still nothing.
The Pack had a word for what I was: the Silent. Wolfless—no Wolf Spirit, no access to the Mind Link, no shift, no enhanced senses to speak of, wounds that healed at a human pace. And the last one, which was the one that mattered most in visible terms: I couldn't be Marked. A Mark required two wolves. My side of the bond was a blank wall, and pressing against it changed nothing.
My neck would look like this for the rest of my life.
"Child." Maeve's voice came from the doorway—she was the only one in the entire Pack who still called me that. Everyone else said Luna with a formality so careful it sounded less like a title and more like an inscription on a plaque.
"It's time to go down," she said. "Everyone's arrived."
"Coming."
I screwed the lid back on and put the jar in the drawer. The drawer was heavy because fifty-nine other jars were already in it, lined up in the dark.
I had something to say to Rune tonight. I had rehearsed it somewhere between seventeen and twenty times, and what I wanted to say was short: for this year's Moon Run, I'd like to watch from the ridge. Not run, not join—just stand on the slope and see it, once. Just once. Five years of full moons and I had never seen our Pack move together under the open sky. Every month I stayed in the cellar while they ran, because Rune said the wolves got caught up in the excitement and it wasn't safe for someone like me to be in the middle of it.
He was right. He was always right, and that was the most exhausting part.
I held the wall going down the stairs—not because anything was wrong with my legs, but because my heart was beating too hard and I didn't want it to show in my walk. Relax, Nessa. You're asking one question. You're not trying to take anything from anyone.
The courtyard was strung with lanterns. Pack members came in from every direction—young in clusters, older ones in their own groups, children threading between everyone's legs. The air carried layers of smell I could actually read: roasting meat, pine branches, wet earth, and someone who had put on flower oil for the occasion, which struck me as sweet in a way I couldn't quite name.
I stopped at the top of the steps. From there I could see the whole courtyard, and the whole courtyard could see me—high enough to be visible, far enough to require no one to actually speak to me. Five years and this was still my position. Rune stood in the open center of the yard with his back to me, shoulders broad and pulled tight under black fabric. He never turned to look for me because he already knew where I would be, just as I already knew where he would be, and that rhythm of mutual certainty had long since stopped feeling like closeness.
I drew a breath. Once the Moon Rite started and he turned around, I would call his name. Just once. And then—
Every wolf in the courtyard lifted their head at the exact same moment. Not one at a time, not in a ripple—all of them, simultaneously, as though someone had pulled a single thread running through all their minds at once.
The Mind Link had opened. Rune had opened it, Pack-wide.
I knew what that was. I had read about it, transcribed the Old Lunar ceremonial texts, could recite the relevant passage from memory without stumbling. But I had never heard it. Not once. Because wolfless people don't enter the Mind Link. To the Mind Link, I was a wall, and whatever was being said on the other side of it was being said without me.
So in this moment, my husband's voice was moving through the minds of every person in this courtyard, and I was standing on the top step in the Luna's dress, hearing nothing.
I started reading faces instead. Five years had made me good at it.
The first shift was in the eyes—a brightness that came on suddenly in a dozen people at once. Then mouths: someone smiled, then someone else, and the woman near the front who was holding a child first went still with shock, then covered her mouth, then let the tears come, laughing as they fell. A voice somewhere called out something that sounded like is it true? And then Bram—standing just behind Rune's right shoulder—burst into laughter, full and shaking, and slapped the person beside him on the back.
My stomach dropped before my mind caught up. I didn't know anything yet, but my body had already decided.
A small boy was standing not far from me, six or seven years old, pulling at his mother's sleeve. "Mom, who's Cassia?"
His mother bent down and said something to him with a smile.
Cassia. The sound rang in my ears like a bell struck too close, and then everything went quiet—not painful, just absolutely still, the whole world with the volume taken out, nothing left but my own heartbeat knocking steadily at the back of my skull.
The courtyard gates opened.
A girl in white walked in. I didn't need anyone to tell me who she was—the crowd had already told me, parting down the middle as she passed, someone pressing flowers into her hands, an old woman stepping forward to fold her into an embrace. Cassia Wren. Greystone's white wolf, gone five years and now returned.
Rune turned and moved toward her.
I saw his profile. I saw him smile—not the managed, obligatory kind, not the practiced lift of the corners of the mouth that he offered me at dinner or in passing. This was the kind where the eyes went first, where the whole face loosened in one motion, where shoulders that had been holding tension for longer than I could estimate finally let it go, like a rope that had been cut clean.
So he smiled like that. He had that in him. The man who was always at the same temperature, who spoke to me in the same register regardless of the occasion, who had never in five years looked at me as though my presence changed the quality of the room—he had that smile in him, and he was using it now, and the whole Pack surged forward around him.
No one looked back at the steps.
The wind lifted the Cedar Ash from my collarbone—burnt wood, old rain—and I stood there and let it.
There was something I had never told anyone. Five years ago, on one particular night, I had done something. It cost me three days of consciousness, and by the time I could speak again, the world had settled into a version of events that I had never disputed. I was too weak at first, and then too much time had passed, and then it had simply become the truth because I had never contradicted it. I had told myself it didn't matter—he was alive, and that was the part that counted.
I had believed that right up until tonight.
I turned and walked back up the stairs, one hand on the wall, and closed my bedroom door behind me. I stood with my back against it for a long time, until my legs went numb, and then I crossed to the dressing table and pulled the drawer all the way out.
Sixty jars of Cedar Ash, shoulder to shoulder, stacked in neat rows.
I looked at them for a long moment, and a question came to me—one that had never come in five years, not once—simple and very clear: when he gave me these, was he trying to make things easier for me? Or was he making sure no one could tell that Greystone's Luna had nothing on her at all?
My hands started shaking.
Under everything, at the bottom of the drawer, was a letter. It had arrived three days ago with Silverhollow's wax seal on the back. I hadn't opened it because opening it would mean I was seriously considering something I had no business considering. I pulled it out, pressed my thumb under the seal, and held it there for two seconds.
I had always been a cautious person. That was simply what I was.
But I had no interest in being that person tonight. I broke the seal and opened the letter.

She stared at his every movement, lips slightly parted, her stunning brown eyes scanning every inch of his gorgeously toned and glorious body while heat radiated off of hers. He was HERS.
Her body trembled in delight and anticipation; she was ready and wanted to be with him in every way.
As innocent as she was, she wanted him to...no need him to take her in the worse ways, bringing her to heights of pleasures she had never experienced before.
Fuck she is beautiful, one fine specimen, and she is all MINE, MY MATE. A wave of pure unbridled possessiveness vibrated through Alpha Zayne. He thanked the Divine Moon Goddess, for she has truly blessed him.
He drank her in, eyes trailing up her toned sexy legs spread wide for him, and she gave him that come-and-get-it look.
